The story begins in the demon kingdom, in a dirty chamber in the northern castle. Mahin was drinking, as he often did, when a mysterious figure entered. Without turning around, Mahin said, "I don't care who you are or why you're here—leave."
The person was a mysterious man with long white hair. He smiled and bowed to Mahin, saying, "Greetings, my lord Mahin. I came here to offer you something, and I believe you will find it appealing."
Mahin tossed an empty bottle aside and retorted, 'You have no idea what I want.
The mysterious man smirked, "We'll see about that, Lord Mahin."
On the same day, in the southern castle, Jane wore a beautiful dress, accompanied by her brother Monroe and the twins, who looked quite fancy.
"We're heading to Renolva for politics," Jane said, her voice tinged with impatience. "Let's just get this over with."
They boarded the royal carriage and set off for the human kingdom. With Jasmine already asleep, Kunvy advised, "Jane, this visit is about strengthening our ties with them. Choose your words wisely, especially with their generals and noble families."
Jane nodded, and Monroe added, "No other demon has tried this before. Make sure your first impression counts."
"I'll do my best," Jane replied. "But think about it—Yoranios never tried this. He didn’t believe in uniting demons and humans, but he trusted in building a prosperous, peaceful kingdom."
Monroe smiled and said, "Even I, sister, find it hard to believe we can unite with them. Humans despise us as much as we despise them."
Jane said with a smile, "I'm not naive, brother. I don't plan for us to unite, but rather to make influential friends who can prevent war if the kingdom contemplates it."
Kunvy chimed in, "That's wise, because the kingdom can't wage war without the approval and support of the nobles."
Jane continued, "Exactly, my sister. If we establish a business relationship with the nobility, it will safeguard our kingdom, as the nobles won't allow the king to harm their businesses and profits."
One of the guards tapped on the carriage wall and asked, "My queen, would you prefer to travel without magic and enjoy the road and forest's beauty, or should we use transportation magic to reach the castle faster?"
Jane replied, "No, that would take us months to reach the capital. Use the magic, lad. I don't want to linger in that kingdom any longer than necessary. They are expecting us there today, so initiate the magic."
The guard nodded and began to chant, "nəqliyyat Shari: Renolva qalası." In an instant, the carriage vanished and reappeared in the capital's castle of Renolva kingdom.
The guard opened the door, and Jane stepped out, seeing the prince who smiled and bowed, saying, "Welcome to our castle, Demon Queen Jane Gray Gyovani. I am... I mean, we are delighted to have you with us on this beautiful day."
Jane nodded and replied, "Thank you, Prince Riyo."
Riyo smiled and led Jane, Monroe, the twins, and a few guards from both sides into the castle. As they walked, he thought, *She is stunning! But how do I even start a conversation with her?*
After a few moments, they entered the castle, and Monroe noticed people staring at them, not with admiration, but with resentment.
Once Riyo was out of earshot, Monroe whispered to Jane, "They’re eyeing us like we’re thieves."
Jane whispered back, "I've noticed, but don't let it bother you. And remember, if anyone disrespects me, I'll deal with them myself."
After a short walk, Riyo led them into a fancy and beautiful spacious chamber. Suddenly, he bowed and addressed Jane, holding an armful of flowers and roses, "My sunshine, illuminating my path, my heart brimming with hope and joy, my beautiful guide through the darkest night, my radiant moon, Jane Gray Gyovani."
At that moment, time seemed to freeze. Riyo's face was a mix of hope, waiting for even the slightest hint of approval from Jane.
HE WAS DEAD WRONG! Jane's face twisted in disgust, her eyes widening in shock at what she had just heard. Monroe exclaimed, "Sister, what in the Krogbakh's hell is this prince talking about?"
Kunvy remarked, "It was a nice sentiment, but the timing was a bit off."
Jasmine slept soundly on Kunvy's shoulder. Prince Riyo, bowing deeply, shouted, "SORRY, MY QUEEN! GIVE ME THE SIGNAL, AND I'LL CUT OUT MY TONGUE!"
Jane rubbed her temples and replied, "In times like these, the last thing we need is your bloodshed. Just forget it."
Prince Riyo bowed once more, then dashed off. Moments later, the king appeared in the hallway, accompanied by a woman. SHE WORE WHITE ARMOR WITH GOLDEN ACCENTS, A YOUNG LADY, LIKELY IN HER THIRTIES, WITH LONG BLACK HAIR AND INTENSE RED EYES. HER FACE BORE NO SCARS. SHE CARRIED A GOLDEN SWORD AND A TEMPLE INSIGNIA ON HER CHEST.
The king said to her, "Rina, the hero, it's your duty, and I stand with you until the end."
Rina smiled and replied, "It must be done, by us."
Suddenly, they noticed the prince sprinting past them. The hero and the king exchanged bewildered looks, trying to call after him, but he was already out of the castle.
The king mused aloud, "What transpired here? Has my son lost his senses?"
One of the maids bowed to the king and explained the situation. The king sighed, "This fool, flirting with the demon queen without considering the consequences."
The hero, Rina, commented, "It was a nice gesture, but the timing was off."
Meanwhile, in the opulent room where Jane and her family were gathered, Jane remarked, "The meeting is scheduled for tomorrow night, so we have some time to spare."
Jasmine slumbered soundly on Jane's lap, and Kunvy, after a moment of contemplation, voiced, "Why do I have the feeling that someone is observing us?"
Monroe began, "Ooooooh, we didn't tell you, but it's.........."
Simultaneously, there was a figure in the forest, concealed among the shrubbery. HE WAS A TALL MAN LYING ON THE GROUND, DONNING A ROGUE-LIKE ENSEMBLE WITH RED FABRIC WRAPPED AROUND HIS RIGHT ARM. A PROMINENT SCAR EXTENDED FROM HIS LEFT CHEEK TO HIS NECK. THE ROGUES, RENOWNED AS ADVENTURERS, SHARED SIMILAR APPEARANCES, DRESSED IN LIGHT ARMOR OR SIMPLE ATTIRE, WIELDING SMALL DAGGERS, AND EXCELLING IN MAGIC AND SURVIVAL SKILLS. HE PLACED HIS DAGGER BESIDE HIM IN PREPARATION FOR ANY POTENTIAL THREAT. HE SPORTED WHITE HAIR AND PIERCING BLACK EYES, STRIKING FEATURES INDEED.
Kunvy gasped, "Fenris? Here? I thought he left to be an adventurer a century ago!"
Monroe affirmed, "Yes, he's an adventurer. That's why we hired him to safeguard Jane in case of trouble. If not, well, it's an easy paycheck."
Kunvy then rose from the couch and proceeded to the balcony, waving to Fenris. He gazed back at her from a distance, his gaze stern and unwavering. He raised his hand and reciprocated Kunvy's gesture, prompting a smile from her before she hurried back inside to protect Fenris's cover.
An hour passed. Jane gently stroked Jasmine's head while Kunvy and Monroe occupied themselves with some books, biding their time until nightfall.
Suddenly, a knock echoed at the door. Jane gestured to Kunvy, who went to answer it. At the door stood Rina, the hero.
Rina entered and respectfully bowed to Jane, saying, "My queen, Jane Gray Gyovani, it's an honour to meet you."
Jane nodded and inquired, "What does the hero of this kingdom seek from me?"
Rina looked up, slightly puzzled. "How did you know I’m the hero? I could be a general, or even the king’s daughter in shining armor..."
Jasmine, seated on the elegant couch, interrupted Rina, "With such overt radiance, it's quite noticeable. I sensed it even before entering the castle."
Rina appeared taken aback. Jane and the others were equally surprised to see Jasmine speak with such seriousness and sharpness, but they maintained their composure.
Rina conceded, "You're correct. I am the hero of the Renolva kingdom, the face of the army in political matters."
Monroe’s expression turned serious. "What do you want from us, hero?" he asked.
Rina smiled and expressed, "I am an ardent admirer of the demons' strength and hold great respect for your kingdom's history."
Jane nodded, exchanging a puzzled glance with Monroe and the twins as Rina continued her enthusiastic praise of their kingdom.
Rina, caught up in her excitement, went on, "Your kingdom transformed dramatically after the war. The economy flourished faster than any other, with merchants' ambitions stretching beyond your borders. Yoranios Gyovani was a true visionary..."
Jane whispered to Monroe, "Can we find a way to redirect her? She's delving into details we're already well-acquainted with."
Monroe agreed, and then Rina carried on, "And let's not even get started on your universities..."
Monroe interjected, "Hold on a moment. We do appreciate your admiration for our kingdom."
Realizing she had overstepped, Rina bowed and apologized, "Forgive me, my queen. I hope I didn’t upset you."
Jane took her hand, reassuring her, "No need to apologize. It's heartening to encounter those who harbour no grudge against us."
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
Rina acknowledged, "Yes, my queen. People like me exist everywhere. It's just that we humans often cling to certain ideas—or perhaps it's better to call them complex ideologies. From the earliest training, a knight focuses on two key aspects: combat proficiency and nurturing a loathing for our adversaries, be they ghouls, demons, or devils. These ideologies are ingrained in us, and they permeate through generations, creating this chain of animosity. It's not entirely our fault, but rather a consequence of our limited understanding and our apprehension of those we cannot comprehend or communicate with."
Jane responded with a solemn expression, "Yet, it seems that humans consistently resort to the solution of eliminating what they fear or fail to understand. Your confident assertion that you're a virtuous race with honourable and noble roots—am I mistaken?"
Rina affirmed, "No, my queen. However, with all due respect, I must tell you that we will..."
A knock at the door interrupted Rina. It was three maids who curtsied, and one of them spoke in a calm, pleasant voice, "My queen, the head of the Missandei family requests an audience with Your Highness. How should I respond, my queen?"
Jane replied, "I accept his invitation. Prepare my carriage. Kunvy, you're coming with me. Heroine Rina, it's been a pleasure to meet you, but our conversation must be postponed."
Rina bowed, and Jane, accompanied by Kunvy, left the room with the maid, heading towards the Missandei house. Meanwhile, Monroe instructed the second maid, "Send a letter to the noble Hamell, requesting a meeting with him. My name is Monroe Gyovani."
The maid bowed and left the room, followed by Monroe. Jasmine closed the book she was reading and calmly yet majestically instructed, "Send a letter to the king, Jasmine Gyovani, requesting access to the castle's library, and make it swift."
The maid complied, leaving the room with Jasmine trailing behind. Left in the room was Rina, who lifted her head and continued speaking to herself, her eyes cold yet tinged with sadness. "They will never see you as an ally or a friend, but as a deadly threat to our existence. It's the damn nature that takes control of us."
An hour later, Jane and Kunvy arrived at Missandei's house, a grand and meticulously constructed residence befitting of nobility. Jane stepped out of the carriage and was warmly welcomed by Stilmyst, the esteemed head of the family. He was accompanied by ten maids, all elegantly attired, who performed a synchronized bow in unison, extending their gracious welcome with the words, "My queen, Jane Gray Gyovani, welcome to the illustrious halls of the Missandei noble house."
Nobleman Stilmyst smiled, raising his hands in the air, and approached Jane, saying, "My queen, I am truly honoured that you have accepted my humble invitation."
Jane, adopting a serious tone, replied, "Your house is known for its pursuit of justice and its notable history, especially in welcoming demons into this kingdom."
Stilmyst's smile broadened as he nodded, "Indeed, my queen. I take pride in the fact that our efforts have caught Your Highness's attention. I firmly believe that people should be judged by their deeds, not their lineage or race. Discrimination is bad for business, and it's an outdated way of thinking."
Just then, the head maid approached Stilmyst and bowed, informing, "Sir, the dinner is prepared. I took the liberty of organizing the finest traditional demon banquet for our esteemed guests."
Stilmyst acknowledged and turned to Jane, "My queen, I must apologize for detaining you. Let us proceed inside, where we can engage in a more extensive conversation on various matters that greatly interest me."
Jane and Kunvy entered the Missandei house alongside Nobleman Stilmyst and his maids. Meanwhile, in the forest, Fenris repositioned himself to obtain a better view of Jane and Kunvy.
Simultaneously, in the grand library, Jasmine strolled alongside a maid who explained, "My lady, this library encompasses sections dedicated to every race. Each section boasts extensive shelves of books covering history, economics, legends, myths, past and present magical practices, as well as captivating tales from days of yore. Additionally, there are volumes on the inner workings of each society, and even accounts of the most formidable warriors who have left their mark on this world."
Jasmine asserted, "Very well. Bring me books on economics from every nation, as well as some volumes delving into the social structure of this kingdom."
The maid graciously bowed and promptly set off to fulfil Jasmine's request, leaving Jasmine undisturbed at a table located far from any potential distractions.
As nightfall settled, Monroe found himself before a modest house, devoid of the ostentation often associated with noble abodes. While not adorned in opulence, it held a comfortable stature, its boundaries open and unencumbered by protective walls. Stepping out of his carriage, Monroe was greeted by six young lads, each clad in light armour and armed with a small blade. In unison, they bowed, and a man stood before Monroe.
With a resonant voice, the man declared, "Greetings, Lord Monroe. It is both a joy and an honour to receive you."
Monroe pondered for a moment, remarking, "Considering your standing as a former hero of this kingdom and its current general, I had imagined you to reside in the grandest estate in all the realm."
A hearty chuckle escaped the man's lips as he replied, "I am a man of simplicity, finding no need for the extravagant trappings that nobility often holds dear. I cherish a modest dwelling where I can watch my children grow."
Monroe grinned, acknowledging, "Of course, I understand."
The man, revealing a touch of humility, insisted, "You may address me as Hamell. No need for formal titles or honorifics. But I shall persist in calling you Lord Monroe for my own ease."
Monroe nodded in agreement. "As you wish. Now, shall we proceed?"
Together, Monroe and Hamell made their way toward the house, their procession followed by the boys, their steps bearing the discipline of true knights.
Meanwhile, within the splendid chamber at the Missandei residence, Jane held court from an intricately crafted chair, Kunvy at her side, facing Stilmyst, who was also seated in conversation.
With a measured tone, Jane inquired, "To the matter at hand, Nobleman Stilmyst, what prompted this evening's invitation to your esteemed abode?"
Stilmyst met her gaze and replied, "I extend this invitation today, my queen, to propose a venture that could forge a prosperous partnership between us. I hope to cultivate a relationship that transcends mere words and yields tangible benefits for both our realms."
Jane, intrigued, pressed further. "And why, if I may ask, do you seek such an alliance, Nobleman Stilmyst? You do not appear to be beset by financial straits."
A genial smile graced Stilmyst's countenance as he clarified, "Indeed, my queen, financial hardships do not plague us. However, our family's enterprise thrived on trade and the movement of goods. In the aftermath of the war with the Arguand kingdom and certain diplomatic challenges with neighbouring realms, our once robust trade routes have become perilously thin, and our roster of reliable partners has diminished. Establishing new alliances, I believe, would mark a promising beginning towards revitalizing our business networks."
Jane absorbed his words, recognizing the potential benefits. "So, you facilitate the transportation of goods and products to the demon kingdom, and in return, our kingdom shares in the profits and gains from this endeavour?"
Stilmyst's smile widened, "Yes, my queen. Everyone benefits and reaps profits from this arrangement."
Jane's tone grew more serious as she stated, "In a month, we have a scheduled meeting with our advisers in the kingdom. I expect you and your most capable advisers to attend. We will deliberate on matters such as pricing, taxation, and other relevant concerns to gain a comprehensive understanding of the proposed venture."
Stilmyst, nodding in agreement, responded, "Yes, my queen. I eagerly anticipate this forthcoming meeting with Your Highness."
Unbeknownst to them, Fenris maintained his vigilant watch from a high tree, keeping a keen eye on his sisters while scanning for any potential threats he might need to neutralize.
Meanwhile, in Hamell's modest abode, Monroe settled onto a wooden chair, a simple yellow carpet adding a touch of warmth. The rest of the household sat on similar unadorned wooden seats. Monroe quipped, "An esteemed hero of this kingdom, and yet, your choice in furnishings is quite modest. Have you irked some high-ranking general, or are you simply a man of humble tastes?"
Hamell, mid-meal, burst into laughter, nearly choking. After a fit of coughing, he managed to regain his composure. "Excuse me, Lord Monroe," he gasped, "I simply desire a straightforward life for my children. As for upsetting certain individuals in the kingdom, I can assure you they'd prefer not to lay eyes on me again. HAHAHAHA."
Monroe's smile broadened. "So the rumours hold true. You were indeed a determined and steadfast young lad, am I correct?"
Hamell paused in his meal, overcome by laughter and coughing fits. Between chuckles, he managed to share, "I beg your pardon, my lord. I was just recalling a time on the borders with the Arguand kingdom during the war. They tasked me with escorting a particularly vexing young noble to his family. I vehemently refused, citing the soldiers under my command who were in dire need of assistance. This, naturally, did not sit well with the higher-ranking knights. I faced consequences for my insubordination. It was only later that I learned the 'brat' was none other than General Foges' son at the time. Oh, the trouble I found myself in that day! HAHAHAHAHA."
Monroe leaned in, captivated. "And then what transpired?"
Hamell continued, his voice filled with pride. "I was the kingdom's hero, and landing in a prison cell would have tarnished the army's reputation. You know what I achieved that day, Lord Monroe? I not only rescued my beleaguered soldiers, but also rallied them to repel the Arguand kingdom's forces. What's more, I stumbled upon a young orphan in one of the razed villages. I ensured his safety. Afterward, I slept soundly in my own bed for two days, without a trace of regret."
Monroe nodded, thoroughly impressed. "An incredible tale, my friend Hamell. And I've heard of your other exploits."
A look of confusion crossed Hamell's face at Monroe's statement. "Forgive me, Lord Monroe, but which tale do you mean?"
Monroe's countenance grew serious. "I know of your act of saving a demon child on the borderlands some 31 years ago."
A hint of sorrow clouded Hamell's expression. "It was a minor deed, my leader at the time ordered me to dispatch him because... (he fell into a heavy silence). He was deemed malevolent. But instead, I provided him with sustenance, clothing, and water. The weather was far harsher than usual. After releasing him, I was incarcerated for insubordination. When the war with the Arguand kingdom erupted, they called upon every able-bodied fighter they could muster."
Monroe rose abruptly, his hand striking the table with a resounding thud. "This is precisely why I've sought you out today, Hamell. I entrust you with the protection of these children. I want them to play freely and bask in a childhood unburdened by the fears that plagued us at their age."
Gazing at his children, Hamell sighed, "But what can I do? I am but a humble man, my rank merely an honorary title."
Monroe fixed Hamell with a gaze brimming with hope. "Your name carries immense weight, and people will rally behind you, no matter the circumstance. You must wield it to quell the hate and mistrust that humans seem so keen on propagating. The roots of animosity must be severed. We require individuals like you, Hamell—brave souls who discern right from wrong and do not flinch from presenting the truth to their own people."
Hamell's eyes sparkled with determination as he extended his hand towards Monroe, declaring, "I will do all within my power for these children. Count me in, Lord Monroe."
They clasped hands, sealing their newfound alliance, and proceeded to spend the night regaling each other with stories, accompanied by delectable cookies that pleased every palate.
At midnight, in a shadowed alcove of the castle's library, five candles cast a soft glow over the array of books. Jasmine remained engrossed in her studies, her eyes meticulously tracking each word, absorbing the invaluable knowledge they imparted. She mused to herself, "They've shared some of their wisdom, though I know they've held back their most guarded secrets. Naturally, they wouldn't divulge them, and I'd be foolish to expect otherwise. Yet, these foundational texts offer crucial insights into the economic and social landscapes of these kingdoms. We must bring something of substance to the table if we are to engage them on equal terms." As she read, a fragrant tea sat nearby, its aroma adding to the atmosphere of focused contemplation.
Come morning, outside the Missandei residence, Jane and Kunvy made their way towards their waiting carriage. Stilmyst, standing nearby, gallantly opened the door for them.
He expressed, "I am eagerly anticipating the collaboration with your kingdom, my queen, Jane Gray Gyovani."
Jane reciprocated, "Indeed, nobleman Stilmyst. The anticipation is mutual."
With a courteous bow, Stilmyst saw them off, the carriage setting off towards the castle for a meeting with the king. Meanwhile, Fenris discreetly equipped himself with his dagger, silently shadowing Jane's carriage from a distance.
Simultaneously, Monroe walked towards his awaiting carriage, flanked by Hamell and his eldest child, Han. Monroe gestured towards the carriage, his gaze fixed on Hamell. "My friend, I extend my gratitude for yesterday's discussions. I look forward to our paths crossing again, my friend."
Hamell nodded, affirming, "Likewise, Lord Monroe."
A firm handshake solidified their mutual respect. Monroe ascended into the carriage, embarking on his journey back to the castle for the impending meeting with the king.
After Monroe departed, Hamell turned to his son, Han, and with a stern expression instructed, "Han, go to nobleman Falkor and tell him we've gained a new ally."
Han promptly complied, sprinting off on his errand. As Hamell retraced his steps towards his abode, he reflected aloud, "Hamell, you old fool. Your time as a hero has long passed. Why do you still shoulder the weight of these children?"
At that very moment, Hamell was greeted by his younger children, their faces radiating joy as they rushed to embrace him. In that instant, Hamell, overcome with warmth, chuckled to himself, "You old fool, this is why you care, and always will."
In a world teetering on the edge of self-destruction, there exist individuals like Hamell—beacons of hope and courage, who, armed with an unwavering moral compass, stand resolute in their fight for righteousness and the greater good, staunchly preventing the world from succumbing to its own darkness.
