The Day Earth Fell into Silence
Even in our darkest moments

Even in our darkest moments

His sister exclaimed, "We're finally away." Her cough was worsening. "I need my inhaler... I need to get home..."

"We have one of yours at the family home too. Try to hold yourself together."

The bull's roar grew louder, more furious than ever before, followed by a bizarre sound and a maniacal laugh. Chump inserted the keys. It's a manual car. With a full clutch pedal, he began to drive.

"Thank God they made me practice manual cars."

"What... what do we do now?"

"I... I want to take a shower." He carefully secured both passengers' seat belts.

"Same..." Her sister replied, nodding in understanding.

"But I don't think we even have time for that... Did you see those?! Eruptions from the ground! In the middle of the city?! And the bull creature?!" Chump's expression was far from calm.

The roar ceased, and the creature fell silent.

"I think it gave up. Do you think it felt frustrated because it couldn't catch us?"

"Don't jinx it, please."

They exited the roundabout onto the north highway, and they felt a powerful explosion nearby, down by the river park. A flying shadow passed over them, crashing onto the north entrance of the highway. The cars ahead of them exploded, creating thick smoke.

A fierce and agonizing roar cut through the smoke. The giant bull creature emerged with slow steps, shaking its head, blinded by dust. The monster was battered. Both horns were shattered, and golden blood dripped from the wounds, exposing part of the skull and destroying the stone scales.

With a forceful expulsion, the creature propelled saliva at its own feet, the impact resounding. As the liquid hit the ground, it ignited in a dazzling explosion.

Even faster than before, the bull creature approached, evading cars and any obstacles it couldn't simply plow through. The sister panicked once more, but the boy shouted in a mix of frustration and excitement.

"Of course, you're an unstoppable force! What's a great boss fight without a damn THIRD phase?" Sweat streamed down his forehead as they gripped the steering wheel, navigating through the vehicles.

Ripping away the exterior mirrors of the cars, including his own, Chump sped away. For the first time in the chase, they were faster than the bull. The streetlights turned on, momentarily disorienting both the monster and Chump with the sudden flash.

The creature drooled, launching its explosive spit toward the brothers. Chump barely evaded them while also avoiding obstacles in their path.

"Try to turn around!"

"I can't." He wiped the sweat from his brow.

"What?! Why?!"

"We're going too fast. If I turn around, we'll crash into a building."

"Then what do we do?!"

"We're heading towards the port, so we'll go to the port! What do you remember about your time working there?"

"Yachts, ships, half-abandoned buildings, some construction... I don't know, bro, I don't know!" Her breath came in shallow gasps, the weight of the situation bearing down on her.

"No! Wait, yes! Maybe it can't swim... Just a bit more until I can feint." Chump smiled creepily.

"How?!"

The bull creature stopped spitting up front. It seemed to lack saliva to spit. Fury was evident in its expression as it roared, charging toward the couple.

"Finally!"

"What do you mean finally? Bro, what are you doing?" She started to reach for the wheel, but her brother pushed her away.

The chase led them to a nearby port, filled with construction materials, vehicles, and dozens of abandoned yachts.

Chump reacted, slamming on the brakes without hesitation, only remembering afterward what he needed to do.

"I need to stop, damn it, I forgot that part!"

"Why are you slowing down?! It's right behind us!"

Brake. Stop.

A partially constructed ship stood a few meters away.

Brake. Stop. Turn the wheel to the left for a full rotation.

The bull regenerated its skin and its missing parts, but it didn't care. Understanding that they needed to stop, it leaped toward them.

Brake. Stop.

Sister grabbed her brother's arm with all her might as she yelled, "We're going to die!"

With a fully engaged clutch pedal, he shifted into first gear and floored the accelerator pedal.

The car collided sideways with the building but shot away just before the bull could stomp them. The force of the bull hitting the building in an attempt to flatten the car broke the structure supporting a half-built ship.

The ship's bow struck the creature, breaking the horns once again as his face was pushed by the metal end.

Hurling it into another building before it fell unconscious to the ground, the other building layers collapsing into the creature's body.

However, the creature kept breathing.

"Get dunked on!" Chump roared cheerfully, a rush of joy and adrenaline coursing through him.

He slowed down to catch his breath and looked around. Beside him, his sister made weak, erratic movements as if she were struggling to breathe.

“Sis?” His joy was interrupted.

Her sister was suffocating.

“SIS!”

In a rush, Chump unlocked their seat belts and brought the car to a stop.

His sister could barely speak. "Need... out..."

She pushed the door open and knelt, gasping for fresh air. Chump followed suit and positioned himself beside her, wanting to support her in any way he could.

"I... I think I have one of your inhalers in my bag. Hang on, sis..."

Chump hurried to the car, retrieving both bags. In the background, voices could be heard.

"Beastie! Where are you, best friend? Your destruction ends here!"

"Where have you squashed the humans, Gunnhildr's beast?"

Chump reacted. “Oh no…nonononono….”

The voices belonged to Gunnhildr and Ephiron respectively. Her sister collapsed; her condition was deteriorating.

Before even Chump could do anything, or move, her sister quickly reacted by grabbing his hand.

"No."

"What? But-" Chump was taken aback by her words.

"They're coming. Run away. Please..."

Chump clenched his teeth, his hands, his heart. Tears streamed down his face, his expression revealing his anguish as he grabbed his bags and fled. He found a hiding spot in a corner, pausing to listen to the ensuing conversation.

Gunnhildr and Ephiron arrived at the scene.

"BEASTIE!" Gunnhildr shouted, rushing to her beast companion and placing her hands on its face. "You're gonna be fine, damn it, they really fought you."

The beast attempted to rise but failed. Gunnhildr steadied her. Gently setting her down, she continued, "Easy now, let time do its work. You'll be alright in a while..."

Ephiron observed the situation and retrieved the crystal from before. His gaze, however, fell on the human on the ground. He rushed over to check on her.

"Gunnhildr—"

"Can't you see I'm deal—"

This time, Ephiron interrupted her, a touch angrier. "This human is dying! Call for help! I'll provide treatment." He tossed the crystal to her.

Gunnhildr caught the crystal reflexively and proceeded to relay the information, irritated, all the while cradling Beastie's face. Ephiron glanced in the direction of the corner. He spotted Chump hiding there. He looked at his sister again, tears streaming down, a hint of contentment on her face. He understood the situation.

Ephiron closed his eyes and shouted, "Let Miss Ladice know. I'll personally treat her. Let's move now."

He lifted the sister and hurried away. Chump whispered, "Thank you." then silently slipped into the city.
