The silent night before the storm

The silent night before the storm

The night was eerily beautiful, the sky draped in darkness, glittering with countless stars. The usually bustling city lay in complete silence, an unnatural stillness settling over the streets. Kai Seung and his comrades patrolled the area, their footsteps echoing in the emptiness.

One of his teammates broke the silence, his voice laced with unease. “Isn’t the city usually packed at this hour? It’s too quiet.”

Kai nodded, his sharp instincts screaming that something was wrong. Before he could voice his concerns, an overwhelming aura washed over them—soothing yet monstrous, unlike anything they had encountered before. A crushing pressure bore down on them, forcing two of his subordinates to their knees. Even Kai felt the weight of it, his muscles tensing under the unseen force.

Calista, standing beside him, clenched her fists. “Something about this… doesn’t feel right.”

Their fears were confirmed as the same aura rapidly closed in on them. In an instant, two figures materialized before them, bathed in a golden glow. The divine energy radiating from them was unmistakable.

Calista’s expression darkened. “As I thought… they’re deities.”

One of the celestial beings smirked. “The girl is quite perceptive.”

The other, wielding twin daggers, sneered. “Should we kill them too?” His weapons shimmered into existence, exuding lethal intent.

“Now, now, Oliver,” the first one—Art—chuckled. “Don’t ruin the fun. I want to hear them scream first.”

Kai’s grip on his sword tightened, rage igniting within him. With a single swing, he cut through the oppressive aura surrounding them, breaking its hold over his comrades. Art’s amused expression faltered for a brief moment, while Oliver’s eyes narrowed in disbelief.

“How…?” Oliver muttered. “How can a mortal have such precise control over mana?”

Kai didn’t waste time answering. He lunged at Art, sword flashing under the dim glow of the city’s lifeless streets. His comrades quickly moved into formation, prepared to take on Oliver.

Jin called out, determination burning in his voice. “We’ll handle this one. You take care of the other.”

Kai gave a brief nod before vanishing in a blur, his blade aiming straight for Art’s throat.

The silent night had ended. The storm had begun.
