Chapter 03: Betrayals

“We won, we finally won! I can’t believe it!”, Arslan shouted excitedly like a little kid. It would’ve been hilarious if not for the fact that the remains of the soldiers hadn’t even gotten cold yet.

Everyone had different reactions to this, Samantha was panicking and the other woman, Aqsa was trying to calm her down. Of course, she would be shocked, and no one would blame her after what had just inspired. The two brothers; Jacob and Amir also had grim expressions. The only saving grace was the fact that at least no one puked.

“David! David!”, Doctor Richard shouted as he came running towards David along with Ahmed at speeds unbelievable for his old age. He hesitated for a bit after looking at the brutal scene of his handing over the two carcasses, covered in their blood and gore.

But that hesitation didn’t last long. His fatherly instincts cut in, and he ran up to David and wrapped him in a warm embrace which led to his white coat getting drenched with the blood on David’s attire.

“Are you alright? You didn’t get hurt did you?”, Doctor Richard Inquired, worriedly looking his son up and down as he frantically patted his body for any injuries.

“I’m alright Father, No need to worry”, David reassured his father as he wiped his face clean with the piece of cloth, Ahmed had offered him.

“How can I not be worried? I’m your father. Promise me you won’t do anything like that, ever again”, Doctor Richard asked with worry evident in his eyes.

“I’m sorry for worrying you Father”, David replied with a smile on his face, clearly glad that his father was worried for his sake, “Besides that, we have more pressing matters to deal with”

“Yeah”, Ahmed stated as he glanced at the dead soldiers at David’s feet with a complex expression. And he had a clear reason for making such an expression.

“They are not the soldiers from the military of this country”, Doctor Richard asked with a frown on his face.

“This country? It looks like they don’t belong to any country out there”, Ahmed suggested, and the both of them nodded.

“Mercenaries then?”, doctor Richard Inquired.

“Possibly, But I can’t say for sure since their equipment kinda looks like it should belong to a mercenary group, I haven’t seen any country having any squad or battalion that would wear these kinds of equipment”, Ahmed shook his head and stated and the father-son believed his words. They knew, that Ahmed had an obsession with militaries of different countries, so he was the best person to ask about them as he was the most knowledgeable one around.

“A private organization probably. Plus that insignia…”, David’s words trailed off as he looked at the mark embroidered on the uniforms of the dead soldiers. The mark was of a triangle shape which contained a peculiar beast inside. The beast had the body of a lion, along with the head of a human with sharp teeth and a beard. It also had a scorpion-like tail and huge bat-like wings which gave it an overall ferocious appearance.

“A Chimera. It isn’t something I’ve seen before on a monogram”, Ahmed answered with a puzzled expression.

“I think we all know what this means. Someone inside has leaked the information to other parties. Otherwise, it wouldn’t explain how they were able to arrive here so quickly”, David commented and the others nodded in response. He didn’t highlight the fact that the soldiers were waiting in the hall for them, “We’ll discuss the rest later. We should get the hell out of this place as fast as we can. Otherwise, not even our corpses would be left for the military to examine”

“Oh right. We should probably get moving”, Doctor Richard stated and was about to turn around when the sound of two assault rifles firing fell on his ears, startling him as he was not expecting that. The very next moment he was pulled behind the alter by David as Ahmed took cover behind one of the tables placed in front of the alter.

“What is happening?”, Doctor Richard as in an exasperated tone. He truly did not know what had transpired. One moment they were talking amongst themselves and the next came sounds of gunshots along with his son pulling him behind the altar.

“Augh, Those two bastards betrayed us, They killed all of the others”, David Replied with a grunt as the hasty move of him pulling his father behind the altar dislocated his shoulder.

“Are you alright? And By “those bastards” you mean…..”, Doctor Richard trailed off his words trying to guess the identity and he soon concluded. There were only two people among them who could work together well, except David and Ahmed of course but they were clearly not the traitors. But before the Doctor could voice out his thoughts, David replied.

“Of course, it’s the two sons of a bitch, Amir and Jacob fucking Lorenzi’s”, David used strong words at the two brothers.

“Why would they kill everyone else?”, Doctor Richard asked as a sorrowful expression passed over his face. He felt that there was no need for the others to die like this. And why had the two brothers betrayed them in the first place? He did not want to admit it, but he trusted his son more than anyone else in the entire world.

“Don’t be down father, We can mourn them later. For now, we have to solve this situation fast because the subjects would be on us in a few minutes at best.”, David reassured Doctor Richard who had a downcast expression. “And, as for the question of why they did that. It would be better to ask the Mongrels themselves”

Hearing David’s words, Doctor Richard suddenly had the urge to hit his son on the head for his language but he kept it to himself as he gave off a slight smile. But before David could say anything, Ahmed shouted from behind the table he was hiding behind. “Jacob, Amir! What is the meaning of this?”

“Oh, nothing much, Ahmed. It’s just that we want something, and you guys are in our way of getting it.”, Jacob said with an unusual smile. Swiping away his rugged brown, medium-length hair from his forehead.

“What is it that you want? Is it the formulas? If it is then it can wait for a while. The subjects will be here in a while due to the sounds of the gunfire”, Ahmed asked again, not moving from behind the table.

“Who wants the formulas when you can get the creator? So give us Doctor Richard and maybe we’ll let you live”, Amir stated sarcastically as he pointed the assault rifle in his hands towards the table where Ahmed was hiding, while his brother; Jacob pointed the shotgun in his hand towards the altar where Doctor Richard and David were hiding.

Both, Jacob and Amir looked very similar as they were brothers with a one-year gap between them. The only apparent difference was between their hairstyles, Jacob had medium hair which covered most of his forehead, whereas Amir’s were shorter and weren’t in any particular style, giving them a rough appearance.

“Yeah, who would’ve known? How about I give you another offer? Put down your guns and maybe I won’t desecrate your bodies after you die”, David almost shouted at them while a sarcastic smile hung on his face. A clear display of how he didn’t take them seriously at all.

“Do you think your provocation is gonna work on us?”, Jacob stated with a deadpan expression.

“At least it was worth a try”’ He picked up a stick lying around and slowly raised it above the altar, which led to the stick getting shot almost instantly he hurriedly pulled his hand back down and sneered, “Heh, it doesn’t look like you guys are amateurs. You know how to properly shoot a weapon. So who is it?”On hearing David’s words, the brothers' faces froze up for a second. Did he know? No, he couldn’t know about that organization, They concluded as they shook their heads and spoke up in a questioning tone, “What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean. Who is it you betrayed us for? Is it the Military? Or is it some private organization?”, David pushed on further once again.

“SHUT UP”, Jacob shouted, his voice thundering inside the cathedral, Anger evident on his face. “What do you know about us huh? You had everything given to you from the very beginning. What do you know about people who have never had anything in their life? What do you know about people who have had to crawl their way up from dirt”

“Wait a minute. If this is one of those times when you are gonna start yapping about your backstory then I may have to disappoint you. We don’t have the time for that kind of bullshit right now. So it would be appreciated if you could just move on from this useless crap and TELL ME ABOUT THE THING I ASKED YOU ABOUT”, David started with a calm and collected voice which rose to a thundering level at the end of his words.

Doctor Richard was startled for a moment when David raised his voice but calmed himself and put a hand on David’s shoulder trying to calm him down as well. “Calm down son, there is no need to get all worked up”

‘Don't worry Father, I’m calm”, David gave his father a warm smile.

But unknown to Doctor Richard, he was not the only one who was affected by David’s shout earlier. The others were shocked as well, They had all known David for more than 2 years, and although he had his ups and downs in his life. He had always remained calm and never before had he shouted like this. That is why Jacob and Amir never really did anything but stood there for a moment.

“Fine, If you guys won’t admit it, then I’ll tell them myself”. For a while, David waited for them to answer his question but after receiving no reply, he started to speak once again, “These Motherfuckers were supposedly offered to be made the next deputy heads of the research facility, belonging to the company to which those soldiers in the black belong to. And seeing as how our sweet little boys fell for their little ploy and were leaking information to them even before we had departed from the control room”

To say that Ahmed and Doctor Richard were stunned by this information would be an understatement, but the most shocked ones weren’t the two of them. Rather, it is the two standing on the other side of the altar.

“H-how did you know?”, Amir asked as his voice trembled.

David threw his handgun out to the side of the altar, a scene which made the two brothers and Doctor Richard and Ahmed equally stunned.

“Don’t shoot I’m coming out. We can talk this through”, David stated with a calm voice as he began to walk out from behind the altar. Although Doctor Richard was against the idea of him leaving cover and standing out in the open in front of two guns, his appeal was rejected as David gave him a reassuring smile and got up from behind the altar and stood up with both his hands held high in the air.

As soon as he stood up, the sound of something piercing the air resounded in his ears as something flew past his face at high speeds, which he presumed to be a bullet. The bullet grazed past the side of his face, drawing some blood as it embedded itself in the wall behind.

“That’s a warning. Try anything funny and the next one will be between your eyes”, Amir stated with a complex expression, clearly he was unsure of what to do in such a situation. They knew that David was unpredictable and they were ready to shoot him down if he attacked. But they haven’t even thought about the possibility that David would try to talk to them.

“Can I take you not making strawberry paste of my brains as a sign that you guys are willing to talk this through?”, David asked as a somewhat nervous smile covered his face. It seemed as if he had become nervous after the close call with the initial shot.

“Hurry up and speak, we won’t give you much time”, Jacob stated hurriedly, he was clearly on guard against David. He liked to predict people’s actions, but David was the most unpredictable Mother fucker out there. And Jacob didn’t like the fact that there was a “Wildcard” in his plan.

“Fine. It’s not like we have much time anyway, so I’ll get straight to the point. How about I give you guys a counteroffer? And one that you can’t refuse? "++ David stated as he looked toward the two brothers with a seemingly genuine smile.

“Offer? What do you think we are? Some lowlives who would change sides due to money?”, Amir snarled out at David, agitated by his words.

“Are you not?”, David asked with sarcasm radiating off his expression.

“You Bastard!”, Offended, Amir hurriedly pointed his gun towards David, intending to put a hole through his head but was stopped when a hand landed on top of his weapon causing him to look to the side.

“Stop it, brother. Don’t be hasty. I know he pisses you off and you want to kill him, but let's listen to what he has to say”, Jacob urged his brother as he whispered, in his brother's ears and Amir put down his gun, knowing that Jacob was right this time.

“Fine, if you say so.”, Amir sighed as he barely calmed down his nerves and whispered back to his brother.

“Are you two princesses done playing house? If yes, then can we move on to the discussion already?”, David Inquired as he looked towards the two Sist- Brothers with a teasing expression.

“Calm down Brother, Just hold it in for a moment”, Jacob whispered with a calm smile as he held the cuff of his brother’s sleeve. But inside, he was anything but calm. He wanted to rip the bastard in front of him to shreds but he contained himself as he knew that Although David had a foul tongue, he was supposedly one of the most resourceful man Jacob had met.

Jacob also knew that any offer made by David in this situation would likely be genuine and most likely worth their time. And if controlling his anger and tolerating David’s foul tongue were the only requirements for a stable future. Then Jacob would gladly do so for a while.

“I’m Listening”, Jacob stated calmly as he moved the shotgun in his hand in such a manner that it revealed his willingness to listen.

“What if I told you that the so-called group which has ordered you guys to take my father is probably lying to you?”, Jacob stated calmly as he looked at the two brothers in front of him. No trace of the previous smile was present on his face.

“What kind of bullshit are you spoutin'-“, Amir’s sentence was cut off by Jacob who tightly squeezed the hand around Amir’s wrist, signaling him to keep quiet and let David speak. A message, which he got loud and clear.

“Elaborate”, Jacob spoke softly as he was a bit interested in David’s words.

“How much do you guys know about the organization that you're following, or should I say Manticore? Have you ever been to their base? Do you know who their leader is? Or perhaps you may know of their goals?”, David asked with a curious expression on his face as he looked at the other two, expecting some answers.

“It doesn’t matter”

“To be honest, It kinda does”, Amir tried to play it off but was stopped by David’s words which were a stark contrast to his own. David shut down Amir’s words and then looked toward Jacob and stated, “You have an idea of what I mean right? Doesn’t it seem suspicious?”

“What are you trying to say?”, Jacob spoke out as he look towards David with a frown on his face clearly indicating that this issue had been a pain in the back for him.

“What do you think? They have supposedly given you one of the hardest tasks. Yet, they have greatly restricted the amount of information which they have provided you. What do you think they would do when you guys get out? Let you become one of their major researchers. What are the chances of that?”, David asked with a genuine hint of concern on his face, not for himself but for the two brothers. Which did not go unnoticed by Jacob who had keen emotional senses.

“Are you trying to imply that they would get rid of us? Heh, please, while I do admit that the chances of that happening are there. It is not a certainty. Maybe they just didn’t give us the information because they want the risk of us getting captured and leaking the information under pressure, and after our success, they will welcome us with open arms”, Jacob stated as he looked towards David with a complex gaze full of doubt.

Truth be told, he had been suspicious of the underground organization for a while now as well. As David said, Manticore had never really told the brothers anything worth the amount of service they had required in return. He had begun to doubt the organization's sincerity, and by the show of the soldiers who had arrived before, it was clear as day that they had not intended to carry out their side of the deal.

But even though he knew of this, he still struggled to decide.

“Looks like you can’t even convince yourself, much less any other person. “Let me tell you my offer before that so you can decide better.”, David stated as he looked towards his colleague for two years, waiting for his answer which he did not receive. Instead, he saw Jacob clenching his teeth and furrowing his brows. David waited for a bit to let him sort out his thoughts, after which he continued with his words, ”There exists an organization out there. An organization, that has put in much more effort into this project than Manticore. I would even go so far, as to say that even the government would fall to them in the long run. An organization, that is more mysterious, yet genuine if compared to Manticore. An organization, which is at the height of competence, yet spares no second thought at helping miscreants like us”“That seems like too good to be true. You aren’t baiting us are you?”, With a doubtful smirk, Jacob met David’s eyes as he passed his intention of discerning David’s intentions across. But Jacob was not wrong to doubt his words, this indeed seemed too good to be true.

Seeing the doubt in Jacob’s eyes, David took a deep breath and said, “ It is true, I didn’t believe it as well until I met them myself”

Meanwhile, Doctor Richard and Ahmed were shell-shocked in their hiding places. At first, when David started talking about the organization, both of them thought that he was merely bluffing because they couldn’t believe the fact that someone like David who was the most loyal to the cause, despite hating the government with every fiber in his being, would betray the cause and contact another organization. But their concern turned into worry as David continued with his words.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t think I can trust you after all I’ve seen you do, today and in the two years before that”, Jacob spoke with a sense of denial in his voice as he adjusted the white coat on his body and pointed his shotgun at David. He nodded at Amir standing next to him and ushered him to do the same. “It’s amazing how you tried to bargain with us and not attack us instantly. But unfortunately, we can’t be taking chances right now. We have a purpose to fulfill which cannot be overlooked”

Seeing this, David’s expression became extremely gloomy, Jacob expected him to be angry and lash out as he had always done, but the emotion on his face was instead full of sorrow and desperation. Jacob had seen that face countless times before, it was the same face someone made when they lost hope, when they hated themselves to the point that even death felt like an easy end to them.

This was the same face he had seen on the faces of his family when they had been pushed out of Afghanistan and were forced to live as refugees in Pakistan without any parental guidance. All they had was themselves and a younger sister around a decade younger than them, who was missing.

According to the people in the lab, David was an arrogant prick who didn’t care about how he appeared to anyone. The only people he didn’t actually truly hate would be his father; Doctor Richard or his friend Ahmed. So the look on his face took Jacob and even Amir, who had been in favor of killing David, by surprise.

“Heh, I can’t blame you for something like that. Every time I open my mouth, I ruin something. Maybe it’s better if I just stay silent and let the world be better off without my poison.", David mumbled with a hoarse voice while looking towards the ground, not meeting his sorrow and self-loathing eyes with anyone present in the room. He waited for a moment as he couldn’t speak because of his speech breaking apart. After a moment of silence, during which nobody said anything, he gulped down the guilt in his voice and spoke with the same expression, his eyes red with frustration, “But remember this. I am not an angry dog who just wants to tear everything apart. But even I do not know why I bite. Maybe it’s just because I’m just built this way…built to spread misery and hatred everywhere I go”

David sniffed a bit and used one of his hands to wipe away the tears at the corner of his eyes as he looked towards the altar beside him and then at the table where Ahmed was hiding behind.

“But I promise you that the words I spoke before and my offer was genuine and from my heart. I do know now that I won’t be making out of this one unscathed because the subjects would need someone to distract them and I’m the best suited person here for that anyway. But please promise me that you will take Ahmed along with Father out of here.”, David blurted out after taking a huffed breath and putting a hand on his heart.

Amir was about to lash out and say something but was once again stopped by his brother who looked toward David with a complex expression. His resolve clearly shaken by David’s previous words, was about to agree to his statement when David continued with his words once again, sealing the nail in the coffin.

“But I won’t ask you to do this for free. I’ll give you the name and contact method of the organization that I talked about earlier. Bring my father there and tell them that you are sent by me as a replacement because I died, and they will welcome you with open arms”, David stated as he lifted his gaze from the ground to look towards the two brothers.

“I won’t let you do such a stupid thing”, Ahmed shouted from behind the table a few meters away.

“Shut up”, David said calmly.

“If what you say is true, then we have a deal”, Jacob stated after pondering for a while. He had been hesitant in trusting David’s words but after that display of emotions, he had figured out the fact that he was telling the truth. The amount of pure emotion and self-loathing in David’s eyes was not something that could be replicated even by the best of professional actors, much less by David, who lacked the patience for something like that.

“B-but brother-“, Amir, the hothead of the two brothers tried to protest against this decision but was stopped by Jacob for the fourth time. He could do nothing more except grit his teeth and nod to accept his brother’s decision despite despising David from the bottom of his heart.

“It’s about time you keep your end of the bargain and tell us about the organization”, Jacob addressed David as he spoke out. In response to which David simply shook his head which made Jacob furrow his brows in displeasure. He wanted to ask why he wouldn’t tell them but before he could, David pointed with his eyes toward a certain part of the church.

Jacob lifted his head to look toward the direction where David pointed and upon landing his sight on a security camera, he understood David’s hesitation. He nodded and then opened his mouth to speak, “I understand, so how will you do it?”

David smiled in acknowledgment of Jacob’s mental prowess, he got the signal sent to him really fast.

“There is paper in my pocket, it has all of the necessary information you want. And just so you don’t think that I’m trying anything, I’ll come to you and you can take the information out of my pocket yourself. Of course, I’ll walk with my hands still raised”, David his terms and asked for Jacob’s approval.

“Hmm, Fair enough. You can come here”, Jacob nodded his head in response, he was about to call out David when he talked about the information in his pocket, but David’s last words further convinced him that David was genuine and honest with his previous words.

David started to walk toward the two brothers after walking around the side of the altar, his hands still raised behind his head, seemingly honest with his previous words.

Slowly but surely, he made his way towards Jacob and Amir until he was standing right in front of them. And Amir didn’t let this chance go and made a snarky remark, “What happened to all that shit you were talking about earlier huh?”

Amir tried to agitate David but only received a smile in response which made him angry instead. He was so tempted to just shoot the bastard right then and there but he restrained himself because he knew that was not what his brother wanted, so he gritted his teeth and controlled himself.

“So which pocket is it?’, Jacob asked and David moved his eyes to point at the left pocket of his torn and stained with blood coat. Jacob put his hand in the pocket of the lab coat that David was wearing, and almost instantly, he felt something touching his hand. He knew that it same sort of paper from the texture and the sensation he got. He grabbed onto it and pulled it out of his pocket.

“This is it huh? Now let’s see what you were talking about?”, Jacob sighed as he looked at the paper in his hand. This was the moment of truth, the moment that everything was decided. The contents of the paper would decide what would be the final treatment that they would give to David. They had already decided to spare Ahmed as per David’s request, but after his words, Jacob had been thinking of sparing him as well.

Jacob took a deep breath in anticipation as he slowly unfolded the paper in his possession and laid his eyes on it. Which were widened the moment they made contact with the content on the paper.

“I-is t-this t-t-true?”, Jacob inquired as his voice shook from pure and utter shock at the contents written on the paper. He asked with a low yet trembling voice. This made his brother; Amir curious as well since he had never seen Jacob this serious, but he shook his head and decided to stay curious.

“Hmm”, David smiled a bit as he nodded with a hum, signaling the fact that everything on the paper was indeed true. This made Jacob gulp in anxiousness and pure absurdity of the situation.

He frantically turned around to show the contents to his brother; Amir, but just as he did so, he felt himself getting grabbed from behind, and before could do something about it, something slid across his throat and he felt a warm sensation on his neck. Almost the instant this sensation occurred, he felt the strength inside his body getting rapidly drained as he looked down to see the front of his clothes getting covered in red, and almost instantly after that, he felt his vision getting blurry and his body going semi-limp.

Jacob tried to speak something but all he could hear, were the gargles of the blood in his throat and the sound of his brother shouting something incoherent to him.

“You bastard!”, Amir shouted as he pointed the Assault Rifle in his hand toward David; the bastard who had stabbed them in the back and took advantage of his brother’s leniency, slitting his throat using his Brother’s knife.

Amir pointed his gun toward David but hesitated to shoot, it was because David had snuck behind Jacob, who had not passed away yet but was on the verge of life and death.

“Heh, You fool”, David sneered. Amir’s hesitation was something that only a fool wouldn’t take advantage of. He ran forward towards Amir using Jacob’s semi-limp body as a sort of meat shield, preventing him from shooting.

David quickly covered the distance of a few meters between them. Seeing this, Amir knew what his motive was. The bastard was trying to use his brother’s body as a shield to close the distance between them and eventually stab him as well. But Amir wasn’t going to let him do it. He knew that his brother would eventually pass away and the current situation would only delay the inevitable situation.

“I-‘m sorry brother!”, Amir shouted as he decided to shoot right through his brother's body. He thought that he still had a chance since David was still two to three meters away. The gun in his hand was an assault rifle, which while not the best for close combat, but had a high round per minute value. Amir intended to fill the bastard with bullets along with his brother.

He was about to fire but David who was around 2.5 meters away, pushed Jacob’s now limp body towards Amir with all his strength, ramming the brothers' bodies into each other causing Amir to stagger as Jacob’s head hit him right on his nose, drawing blood from it and blurring his sensation for a second.

This second was enough for David to arrive at his location and kicked Jacob’s body, which Amir had held onto almost unconsciously, causing him to tumble and fall to the ground, Jacob’s body still on top of him. Amir’s head hit the ground on impact, causing his vision to blur somewhat.

Amir tried to move the gun in his hand but it was too late, David was already standing on top of his lying body.

“AHHHH!”, Ami screamed out as David kicked the joint of his wrist, breaking it and causing the hand on the gun to become limp and loosening the hand around the trigger.

“It’s an interesting development, isn’t it?”, David asked as he looked down at Amir with a sneer. Amir tried to shake him off by using his other hand but that seemed like a lost cause as David stepped on his other elbow with all his strength. Breaking the joint as well.

“Arghhhh!”, Amir screamed out once again, in pain, and looked at David who later broke off both of his legs as well causing him to scream out, tears coming out of his eyes like a stream of water. He was hurting all over his body but managed to speak out a few words in between baited breaths, “I see, so you were lying after all, when you said those words”

“Of course, I was. What did you think, That I was gonna add you guys to the organization or something? How naive”, David chuckled at their foolishness and continued, “Shit like you don’t deserve a position at that place”

“Y-you M-monster”, Amir stated as his breath struggled to keep up and broke due to the sheer pain he was feeling.

“A Monster huh?”, He laughed, “It has a nice ring to it. But remember one thing, you lesser being, The term “Monster” is a relative one.”, he stopped laughing as his demeanor became calm at the very end, “Everyone has a monster deep within that they either hide or run from. The only difference between us is that my monster is bigger than yours and that I embrace it with all my being”

“Heh, I know that you’ll die a very horrendous death. Pthew”, Amir sneered at David’s words and spat on his leg. David didn’t do anything immediately and simply smiled.

“Nah, I’d Win”, David stated as he raised one leg above Amir’s face.

“Fuck you-“, Amir blurted out.

“Not Interested, I’m straight”, David Brought down the raised leg hard on top of Amir’s face crushing his nose and drawing blood. This caused Amir’s consciousness to blur even more as he instinctively tried to lift his broken arms to block the impact but that seemed to be futile as David brought another one down on his face, and then a third, and fourth, and then he just kept going and going with no sense of stopping, even after what remained of Amir’s head was nothing but a bloody mess in the form of a puddle of blood, broken shards of the skull and the splattered brain matter.

Amir was now just a body which had its head and face beat to a mashed potato like state, David’s foot leaving a clear hole in what used to be Amir’s face.

“Stop it!”, Ahmed shouted as he dragged David back from the gruesome remains of their Ex-Companions bodies.

“Let me go!”, David shouted in return as he struggled at get out of Ahmed’s embrace, seemingly still in a daze.

“You don’t have to continue, they are dead already!”, David calmed down as he heard his old friends shout in his ears and broke out of that trance to look towards the unidentifiable corpses and calmed down a bit.

But unknown to them, death itself was making its way towards their location and that they would have a deep and resounding relationship with it in the future.
