The trio moved cautiously through the dimly lit passageway, the air still thick with the remnants of the battle they had just fought. Dust particles danced in the shafts of light filtering through the cracks in the stone walls, and Eryx felt an uneasy mixture of adrenaline and exhaustion coursing through him.
“So, what’s next on our grand adventure?” Finn asked, his voice echoing slightly in the narrow corridor. “Are we heading back to the tavern for a well-deserved drink, or do you have another death wish lined up for us?”
Eryx chuckled, still riding the high of victory. “We’re not done yet. We still need to uncover the secrets of the sword and its true potential. Besides, I don’t think the tavern will be open for a while after that ruckus.”
Kaelen looked thoughtful, glancing back at the remnants of the guardians they had defeated. “The sword is more than just a weapon; it’s a key to something greater. We need to find out what it can unlock.”
Finn sighed dramatically. “Great, more cryptic quests. Just what I wanted.”
“Stop whining,” Kaelen shot back, a smile playing at the corners of her mouth. “You handled yourself well back there. I think you’re growing on me, Finn.”
Finn made a mock gagging noise. “Careful, Kaelen. I might start thinking you actually like me.”
Eryx rolled his eyes, unable to suppress a laugh. “Focus, you two. We need to keep moving before we attract more unwanted attention.”
They continued down the passage, Eryx taking the lead, sword at the ready. The stone walls were adorned with more ancient symbols, their meanings lost to time, but Eryx felt a faint pull, a connection to the power of the sword. He could almost hear whispers in the back of his mind, urging him forward.
As they turned a corner, the passage opened up into a vast cavern, the ceiling soaring high above them, shimmering with crystals that caught the light like stars. A large pool of water lay at the center, its surface smooth as glass, reflecting the crystals above. Eryx felt a strange energy radiating from the water, and he approached cautiously.
“Wow,” Finn breathed, his eyes wide. “This place is incredible. Are we sure we’re not in some sort of enchanted fairy tale?”
Eryx knelt beside the pool, running his fingers through the water. It felt cool and refreshing against his skin, but the moment he touched it, the surface rippled, and images began to swirl within the depths.
Kaelen stepped closer, her brow furrowed. “What do you see?”
“Visions,” Eryx replied, captivated by the sight. “I see a city—no, a kingdom. It’s thriving, filled with people. But… something is wrong. Darkness is creeping in.”
Finn squinted at the water. “Is that supposed to be helpful? Because it looks like every fantasy novel I’ve ever read.”
Eryx shook his head, trying to concentrate. “There’s more. I see a figure—someone powerful. They’re searching for the sword.”
You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.
Kaelen gasped. “A rival? That’s not good. We need to protect the sword at all costs.”
“Yeah, but how?” Finn asked, pacing nervously. “It’s not like we can just put a ‘No Trespassing’ sign on it.”
Eryx continued to watch the swirling images, feeling an urgency building within him. “I think the sword is tied to this place somehow. If we can uncover its true purpose, we might be able to stop whoever is after it.”
Suddenly, the water began to bubble and churn, and the images shifted, revealing a shadowy figure standing on a throne, cloaked in darkness. Eryx’s heart raced as he recognized the malevolent aura radiating from the figure.
“That’s him,” he whispered, “the one searching for the sword.”
Finn took a step back, eyes wide. “Can we just leave now? Like, right now? I’d prefer not to meet a guy who looks like he’s got an entire kingdom of nightmares behind him.”
“We can’t leave until we figure out what this means,” Kaelen insisted, crossing her arms. “If he’s after the sword, we need to know why.”
Eryx took a deep breath, steeling himself. “There’s something more in the water. I can feel it.”
He leaned closer, peering into the depths. The water shimmered, and suddenly, a wave of energy washed over him, pulling him into the vision.
“Eryx!” Kaelen shouted, but his surroundings faded into the depths of the pool.
Visions of the Past
Eryx found himself standing in the middle of a vibrant marketplace, bustling with life and color. Merchants shouted their wares, children ran about laughing, and a warm sun shone down on everything. But as he took in the sights, he noticed a darker figure lurking in the shadows, watching him.
“Who are you?” Eryx called, feeling an unsettling familiarity with the scene.
The figure stepped forward, revealing a face he recognized—a younger version of himself, vibrant and filled with hope. “I am the Eryx of what could be, or what was,” the figure said, eyes filled with a mix of joy and sorrow. “You must understand the choices you will face.”
Eryx’s heart raced. “What do you mean?”
The younger Eryx gestured to the marketplace. “This is your home, the kingdom you will protect. But darkness will come, and it will test you. It will test your friends, your loyalty, and your heart.”
“Darkness?” Eryx echoed, fear creeping in. “What kind of darkness?”
As if summoned by his words, shadows began to creep into the marketplace, swallowing the vibrant colors and laughter. The people around him gasped in fear, looking for a way out.
“You must choose wisely,” the younger Eryx said urgently. “The sword is a part of you now, but it will demand a sacrifice.”
“Sacrifice?” Eryx asked, his voice rising in panic. “What do I have to give up?”
The younger Eryx’s expression darkened, and he stepped back into the shadows, fading away. “You will find out soon enough.”
Eryx felt a surge of anger and confusion. “Wait! Don’t leave me here!”
Back to Reality
Eryx was jolted back to the present, gasping as the vision released him. He stumbled back from the pool, shaken.
“What happened?” Finn asked, concern etched across his face.
“I saw… I saw my kingdom,” Eryx panted, trying to catch his breath. “And I saw darkness coming for it. I don’t know how to stop it.”
Kaelen’s eyes narrowed, and she moved to stand beside him. “We have to prepare. If someone is after the sword, they’ll come for it soon. We need to find out who they are and what they want.”
Eryx nodded, his resolve strengthening. “But how? We have to gather information first. We should head to the nearest town and see what we can learn.”
“Great plan,” Finn said, glancing nervously at the cavern’s entrance. “But do you really think they’ll just let us walk out of here after we’ve wrecked a couple of guardians?”
Kaelen shrugged. “If we act quickly, they won’t have a chance to catch up with us. We need to move.”
As they turned to leave, Eryx felt the weight of the sword at his side, a reminder of the choices he had yet to face. Whatever darkness was coming, he wouldn’t face it alone. With Kaelen and Finn by his side, he felt a flicker of hope. They would uncover the truth, protect their kingdom, and maybe—just maybe—find a way to stop the shadow looming on the horizon.
“Let’s go,” Eryx said, determination in his voice. “We have a kingdom to save.”
As they retraced their steps through the cavern, Eryx felt the thrill of adventure pulse through him.
