2 years had passed since she left Amsterdam. She was still determined to become a detective. Maurice thought that was stupid. "Cops are stupid," he used to say. "Cops are not stupid. They protect us," she would say. "No they don't, they don't keep you safe, that's what I do." Maurice barked at her. "I still want to be one." Eva said. "I'm going to study, I have exams in the morning." she said as she went to her room.
Hours went by and she heard an old radio downstairs. It was playing that stupid song again. Don't sit under the apple tree,' she knew what it meant. He would 'visit' her again. She wanted it to stop. It had been ten years now. But she didn't know how to make it stop. As always, he tried to convince her that it was something normal when he was done with her. That it was a beautiful thing. It just showed her how much he loved her.
"I'm going to Morocco tomorrow. I have a business opportunity there," he said, kissing her before he left. Crying, she curled up in a ball and looked at the walls in her bedroom. They were bare white. She slept in the attic. And her father did not bother to make the house a home. He was more concerned with drinking himself to death.
That night she realised she might have a chance to end it all. her father was probably talking about dealing drugs. Sometimes he'd do it for a big payday so he wouldn't have to work for a while. He hated working. She got up and quickly turned on her computer, waiting for the modem to dial-up. Once that was done, she quickly typed into her address bar. 'www.lycos.nl.' She was taken to a search engine. She looked up how to anonymously tip off the Moroccan police. If they picked him up and arrested him for drugs, he would go to jail for life and she would finally be free.
After an hour of searching, she found it. It was an email address. She sent an email to the Moroccan police, hoping they would lock him up and throw away the key.
A few weeks passed. Suddenly she heard a knock at the door. "Who is it?" she asked. "Uncle Lucas," she heard. She remembered him as a nice man. She and Maurice had stayed with them for a couple of summers when she was about 8. She opened the door. "What are you doing here?" she asked. He had brought his family, his wife Johanna and his daughter Elis. She was the same age as Eva. "We've come to look after you and Maurice. You are not allowed to stay here alone."

He said. She did not mind. He was always kind to her. She still had one more test. If she passed it, she would be done with high school. She had applied to the police academy in Maastricht. She hoped to be accepted soon. She had been accepted in advance, but it depended on her passing her exams. She was nervous. It was her maths exam and that was her weakest subject. about Dutch, English, French, German. Natural science and biology. She got straight A's.
A month later, the results of her exams finally came in. She had passed all her exams. That meant she could go to the police academy. She had not been so happy for a long time.
The first few days at school were really just like any other school, except that she now wore a police uniform. And she was allowed to take it home with her. She made friends with a girl called Dorine. She wanted to join the police. She told her she wanted to be a local detective. It looked like such a good job.
After the first day, Eva went to Marion's house. She banged on the door like she had seen another officer do once. "Police opening up." Eva said grinning. Marion opened the door. "Eva!" she said in surprise. "Look at you, a real cop. She said sounding proud.
She loved the police academy. And because I lived in the city, I could go home every day. Something she did not mind at all since her father had left and her aunt and uncle came to look after her and Maurice. Elis seemed to hate Eva's guts, but she didn't really mind. Her uncle Lucas wanted to move away and open his own café when she turned 18.
her teacher told her that if she wanted to become a detective fast, she should do the courses while Eva was at the academy. It would take me two years longer than normal, but Eva would be qualified to be a detective as soon as she left school. That was what she decided to do. She wanted to become a detective as soon as possible.
