It was a peaceful day on Earth. It was 2368. I lived in Greenland. It had been 79 years since the US sank underwater. 80 years ago, Mercury and the Moon collided. A chunk flew off and hit the US, obliterating it and sinking what was left of it. Everyone had known about this and there was time to evacuate. Most people didn’t survive. Temperatures on Earth rose, forcing us to go to one of the coldest places on Earth. Only a few thousand survived the explosion. A dome was built on Greenland and most of the population of Earth was moved there. The rest of them had believed they could survive. Unfortunately, they, along with others, perished. I felt along my neck to make sure my lucky necklace was still there. My father had given it to me, even though I have never known him. He died serving the planet when I was only two years old. He gave it to me when I was born, and gave me a letter to open when I was older. I still have not opened it to this day. I wore the usual uniform, a white shirt along with a black tie and black jeans, as I walked to Imperial Command. Then I saw my best friend, Aiden. He shouted at me.
“Vai! Wait up!”
I stopped, waiting for Aiden to catch up. While I waited, I thought about what he looked like. He had sleek black hair and was short. If I had to describe myself, I was a bit odd. I had black hair that would always stick to my scalp. I felt along my neck to make sure my lucky necklace was still there. Aiden was valued in the pilot program. He caught up in a matter of seconds. He was about to say something when a dark shadow suddenly loomed over us. Aiden’s mouth was hanging open in shock as he stared at the unwelcome guest. What I saw when I looked up was three giant ships in the sky. At first I thought that they were our ships, but I realised that it was far more advanced than any ship humans have made. Everything was exposed, and looked like flesh. Humans had no such type of ship and had only just begun to make ships capable of space travel. You could feel the warbling from the ships as the ground shook beneath me. I stumbled but regained my balance. The middle ship was far bigger than the other two. It was In the shape of a saucer and it had a few cannons mounted on it. At the back there were three cylinder engines. You could see the wee little bridge at the front. One of the ships opened fire. The noise was loud. I rolled and took cover as one of the blasts struck where I had just been. The other blast hit the side of Imperial Command. Smoke rose from the explosion. I guessed that the ship that had just fired was the ship in command. The other two were also in the shape of a saucer but had more cannons mounted on it than the command ship. They also had a small opening on the underside. I took out my binocs from my bag and zoomed in on it. it had tiny ships in it. The ships were starfighters with twin dual cannons and what looked to be a shield generator.

I guessed that those two that I had just witnessed shoot were attack ships.
I turned back to Imperial HQ and saw thirty or so fighters zoom out and went to attack the ships above me and Aiden. I immediately ran to Imperial Command and Aiden soon followed suit. Lasers streaked towards the unknown ships from our starships. (Also known as Cameron Class or for short C-class.) All of the lasers struck the ships but they appeared undamaged.
I felt the looming grey-black walls of Imperial Command surround me as I entered just as tiny attack ships exited the twin ships. I strided into the lift and flicked the up button. I needed to find Admiral Decker.
When I found him, he was looking at the battle that was progressing on a 3D hologram. These devices were highly detailed and could see details that you wouldn’t usually spot. As it was focused on the battle, you could see pipes running across the main HQ. All of our ships were highlighted in blue, whereas the enemy’s were highlighted in yellow.
“You need to pull those fighters back, NOW” I yelled at him.
He was old, as he was in his sixties. He had grey hair but was one of the most valuable people in command.
“No. They destroyed one of our prototype starships In orbit. Do you know how many people were killed?” He replied.
“No but-” I started to say.
“364 people. All dead.” I stood there. I couldn't say anything. My face was stricken with fear. That ship had held a tenth of the world's population. My heart beated fast. I went pale. The silence was unnerving. Many officers in the room with us went silent. Finally, the Admiral spoke. “The aliens have retreated, although with no damage taken. Let us hope we can avenge the 364 lives that were lost.”
I secretly hoped to myself that it would be quick. Little did I know that it would take sixteen years until the bloodshed would come to an end.
