Chapter 12 - Pen Pals

1

To the Dearest Diaz & Evident Elijah,

I am shocked you caught on to what I was intending. Point Elijah!

I know Diaz had no mind for it, he can be quite dim at times. Pity on your end I guess.

It was cute, seeing you scramble, as the time on Hope’s back dwindled. Yes, I was there. Watching.

Surprised?

You really shouldn’t be, I do implore that you do not react so hastily to everything I do, it could cause heart problems to occur if you’re easily frightened.

I am getting off-topic. I thought your letter was rather rushed.

“I see you. Both players in this game. May the best man win.”- Diaz

See it is rather dry. Do better next time, or I might have to punish you.

Consequently, I will give you a penalty now because I wanted this game to be just between us. You see I am the jealous type and I don’t like to share, so Elijah, thank the next victim on you. I will drag her just as you dragged yourself into this game.

It’s too late for regrets.

Unamused,

Mr. Q.

P.S.

Elijah. I see you are similar to me. Have you spoken to Wisdom lately? Seems they are playing on both sides. Reminds you of anyone?

2

Yikes.

“You never told me his letters were so creepy,” Eli exclaimed shivering from the language on the paper.

“That’s what you got from that? He just said that there will be another victim and that you guys have something in common. What’s up with that?” Diaz shouts bewildered at Eli’s apathy.

“You believe him? He could be bluffing. Also, if there is a victim we could just find them first. Don’t we have the police on our side?” Eli questions.

“One, this is off the record unless Captian can give me a special team for this type of stuff. Two this killer is weird and knows too much, but he isn’t a liar. Someone will die because of this. Three, you never answered my question.”

Eli turns to the Detective, not sure of what to do next.

I’m wondering that too. You really are cheating on me. I thought you were only my friend, Wis?

Should I tell him, he would probably think I’m crazy. Even though you betrayed me Wisdom, what should I do?

“Fine, I’ll tell you what’s up with me, when you tell me what Q has on you and why you are involved in this in the first place.”

Diaz goes silent. “That’s none of your business.”

“Then it’s none of your business either”

Campbell walks in with drinks in his hand.

“I thought we agreed it was just us?” Eli mutters.

“I thought you were joking. We need him. Campbell is good at finding the locations and origins of the weapons and substances used in the murders. The man has connections.

I will focus on finding the victims and sorting through the clues.

And you. You will be writing the letters since your friend “Q” has a soft spot for you.”

I’m on homework duty? Great.

“Why does it seem that I am getting the short end of the stick,” Eli says slumping into his chair.

“That’s because you are. I need to keep an eye on you. If your parents knew what you were doing they would kill me. Sue the station, and then kill you.”

“Right. Guess I’ll stick to the homework.

Do we at least know where to drop the letters off to? He sends them to us but where do we get them to him.”

“I have an idea for that,” interjects Campbell. “He wouldn’t want to get caught, obviously, and based on that letter he wrote to us about your friend Hope, he most likely gave us the address for the next pick-up within this letter.”

“So he is running the scavenger hunt. How do we get him to play our game,” asks E.

“That’s where I come in,” says Diaz. “He wants me. So to get him out of his comfort zone, I will find the victims first, and drop off the letters. We have to stop him before he can act.

I am working with other agencies to see if there are any clues to his motives.

I want you to do the same, so get to writing, it’s almost go time.”

I guess. I mean how bad can this get?

To Q,

Excuse the grammar issues, because most of my generation works digitally, this is very old school in my opinion.

Diaz and Campbell say hi. So there’s that.

I don’t have big words or some cryptic message at least not for this first letter. I just want to give you a warning.

I will find you. My family are my non-negotiables and you crossed the line. See Hope she is forgiving, and Daniel is our glue. But me. I have something you don’t.

I hear it all. I see from the outside. And there are holes in your story. You lack something, and when I find out what that is I will send my people to do my dealing.

Because like I said I have something you don’t. Friends, support, ask Wisdom. See if they speak back to you.

On the plus side, I doubt you would kill a woman for my sake. Because if you do that means I’m important. More important than you.

Geez. I guess anyone can stoop low to give out threats. I really don’t like being the center of attention.

Anyway, like I said Diaz says hello and that you will soon meet “Rain”, whatever that means.

Unafraid,

Eli

P.S.

Those who write P.S. notes are lazy. If you couldn’t get your words out right, you should have written a new letter. Or is this game truly not that important? Is paper too expensive? Get your priorities straight man. You’re confusing even me.

“I don’t know about this guys, what if he takes me up on my offer and actually kills some poor lady.” Eli wonders.

“He can’t, that means you win, it would be too easy now. So I think we just bought ourselves some time. Good work E, even I feel threatened by this,” chimes Campbell.

“Let’s just see how this goes. So what’s next?”

“Now it’s time to catch this guy.” Let the games begin.
