“Happy Birthday to me, happy birthday to me…” Luna murmured as she practically skipped into the bookshop with her best friend, Kendall.
Her face was lit up by a bright smile that stretched from ear to ear, the kind that you couldn't control no matter what. Her long blonde hair streamed out behind her, having long fallen out of the ponytail she'd managed to tie it into.
“You know, it's pretty weird to think you’re fourteen now, you’re still tiny!” Kendall teased, ruffling her hair.
“HEY! I had a growth spurt! And I’ll have another, just you wait! And then we’ll see who’s the tiny one, won’t we?” Luna protested, crossing her arms and glaring at her. Kendall just laughed.
It was no secret that Luna had always been quite the tiny one, most girls her age and even younger usually towered over her and the small growth spurt she'd had over the course of that year hadn't helped much.
Kendall had known her since she was eleven years old and just starting at their boarding school. Kendall was almost three years older than Luna and much taller, making them a funny sort of pair, both height-wise and age-wise.
“In your dreams, Shortie.” Kendall chuckled as she walked in after her friend. Luna rolled her eyes and walked ahead towards a bookshelf.“So, your mom gave you birthday money?” Kendall asked as she quickly caught up to her.
“Mhm!” Luna nodded, her smile reaching from ear to ear. She pulled a potions book with a pale pink cover from a shelf. "This looks interesting..." She said, flicking through it. Kendall chuckled "I'm guessing you're buying that one then?" She asked as she leaned to look over her shoulder at it.
Luna nodded "Yep!" She said, before seeing another book, this time a charms book with a yellow cover "Ohh, but this looks good too!" She said, putting the potions book back and picking it out. "Look! But-" Kendall cut her off "Hey, hey! Choose! I'm pretty sure you don't have enough to buy the whole store!" She said laughing.
Luna groaned "I can't! You choose one" She gave her the two books and waited "Please?" She begged. Kendall considered, glancing between them and Luna. "Mmm...I think you'd probably like the potions one better..." She said, handing the book over to her. "That's your best subject, right?"
Although the girls weren't in any of the same classes due to their considerable age gap, Kendall knew for a fact that Luna's best subject was Potions, hands down, mainly because she tended to have the best grades in that area, something she loved to brag about.
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
Luna nodded and beamed, taking the books back and placing the reject back on the shelf. "Thanks!" She headed to the counter to pay for the book, while Kendall hovered by the bookshelves, waiting for her.
Luna finished paying and came back."Come on, Birthday girl, where do you want to go now?" Kendall asked as she pushed herself off the shelves and turned toward the door.
Later that day, Luna found herself alone in a locked room, with a bubbling cauldron, having decided on trying a potion, just for some practice. That wouldn't hurt, right? It was just a potion, she'd made them thousands of times before. This particular one was supposed to change her appearance, she thought so anyway, she couldn't see clearly in the dim light.
Crushed Chasteberry, one Red clover, and red raspberry leaf...
Luna picked up the ingredients one by one and dropped them in, coughing a little at the smoke that was rising out of the cauldron. The potion slowly turned into a soft lilac colour, and Luna was sure it was ready.
She poured the potion into a drinking glass and drank it as quickly as possible, despite the bitter taste. She did her best not to gag and waited, staring at the mirror she had dragged in for any changes. Nothing happened. Luna waited for a little longer, but still, nothing happened. Nothing at all.
"Screw this" She snapped to herself "It didn't even work!" She started to clean up, grumbling to herself, when she felt what seemed like a sharp tug inside of her, but when she doubled over, it disappeared as suddenly as it had come on. "What the.." she shook her head, brushing it off as some kind of side effect. It wasn't as though she wasn't used to stuff like that.
She finished cleaning up and opened the door, making her way up to her dorm to put the things away. She hadn't even realised how late it had gotten, as she made her way up the stairs, there was no one passing by. They were all probably in their dorms. Was it past curfew already?
She hurried up to her dorm to find that her suspicions were correct, almost everyone was asleep.
'Time really does flies when you're having fun...' She tiptoed in and slid into bed after she slipped into her pyjamas, praying that no one would wake up. As soon as her head hit the pillow, she fell into a deep sleep.
"Hey, Luna." Kendall sat next to her at breakfast the next morning and reached for some orange juice. "What did you do yesterday?" She asked, before laughing a little "All I did was study." Luna laughed with her.
"Nothing much. I just brewed a potion that didn't even work...and lost track of time. I don't even know what time I went to bed last night" She shook her head, biting into her toast. "Ah, I see. It's a pity your potion didn't work though." Kendall nodded.
"There's always next time, I guess..." Luna shrugged
Little did she know, in the next few weeks, her life was going to change forever
