Chapter 7 - Lakeheaven

Chapter 7 - Lakeheaven

The afternoon after Akira's ceremony, Yuki stormed into the apartment. “You killed him!” she yelled. It made sense, I had a duel with Akira and then he ended up dead.

“No, he was about to kill me but then a man named Wildcard showed up.” Wildcard had strength like no one I had ever seen. “I didn't have the strength to even land a blow, I only took the credit to fix our other problem with your ex-fiance.”

“Idiot don't bring that up.” she offered her hand so I could stand, even after 2 months the toll of the battle had me struggling to even stand.

At the academy we found a quiet spot overlooking the courtyard where our fellow classmates were diligently practicing their swordsmanship. The clanging of swords provided a rhythmic backdrop to what was about to unfold.

With a hint of trepidation in her voice, Yuki began, "Yuri, it's been a while since I've had my period." Confusion gripped me as I tried to piece together the significance of her statement, but Yuki quickly revealed her secret: "I'm pregnant."

My eyes widened in astonishment as the news settled in. I stood there, momentarily struck dumb by the revelation. But my emotions soon found their voice, and I pulled Yuki close, wrapping her in a warm embrace. With a heart brimming with joy, I whispered, "This is the happiest moment of my life."

Tears of happiness welled up in my eyes as I realized that our lives were about to undergo a transformation.

Later that day, I found myself drawn to the catacombs, a place I hadn't visited since in a while. To my surprise, the usually dimly lit underground passage seemed to have taken on a different ambiance. The members who usually shrouded themselves in hoods were now basking in the warmth of softly glowing lanterns, sharing drinks and stories.

As I descended further into the catacombs, a man who had clearly indulged in one too many drinks approached me. He brandished a sword, raising it to my face, and a ripple of laughter emanated from the surrounding group. I stood my ground, unwavering. "What's a kid like you doing here?" he taunted.

In response, I met their amusement with a firm resolve. "Y'all better not get in my way. If I were you, I'd step aside," I retorted. "And if you're not familiar with who I am, you'd be wise to ask." My words hung in the air, heavy with an air of mystery.

The inebriated man persisted, his skepticism evident. "This kid thinks he's a big shot, huh?"

Realizing that words alone might not be enough, I decided to give them a clue. "I did warn you, I'm not here to hide in the shadows. You're interfering with my business." With measured steps, I moved closer, the sharp edge of his sword hovering dangerously close to me.

Suddenly, one of the men among them retreated, murmuring with trepidation, "He's... he's the last shadow."

With an assurance that I would avoid violence if possible, I addressed the man with the sword, who had now lowered his weapon and offered an apology.

As I strolled through the area, my footsteps led me to a quaint wooden table where my loyal companions were gathered. There, in the center of the group, sat Iris, her eyes half-closed as if she'd been caught in a midday slumber. Nestor and Hermes, on the other hand, engaged in an intense arm-wrestling match, their grunts and competitive banter filling the air. Meanwhile, Elvira and Sofi were deeply engrossed in a spirited card game, their laughter punctuating the atmosphere.

With a grin, I greeted them, and they sprang to attention, offering me respectful bows before I joined them at the table. Sofi, her curiosity getting the best of her, leaned in and asked, "How are you feeling, boss? Did Miss Yuki prove to be a significant help?"

"Absolutely," I replied with a warm smile. "In fact, I wanted to share some exciting news with all of you. Yuki and I are expecting a child."

Their simultaneous exclamations of "No way!" resonated with surprise. Iris chimed in, "Aren't you a bit young to be a parent, boss?"

"Nah, you're just too old," Hermes said as he playfully jabbed Iris in the side. In retaliation, she smacked him on the head, causing him to briefly lose his bearings.

Elvira was quick to inquire, "When's the wedding?"

I hesitated for a moment, trying to find the right words. Sofi encouraged me, saying, "You should definitely ask her, boss."

With determination, I responded, "You're right. I just haven't figured out what kind of ring to get yet."

Nestor chimed in, "Get a big one!"

Hermes added, "An expensive one!" Their debate took an unexpected turn, culminating into a scuffle.

Sofi, in her reassuring way, reassured me, "As long as you get it, it should be perfect." The other girls nodded in agreement.

With newfound enthusiasm, I declared, "Absolutely!" A broad smile illuminated my face. "Now, let's catch up on how things have been going." They recounted their adventures, mentioning that they had ascended to Class A- in the adventurers guild, providing them with valuable connections to influential figures. Despite the lingering name of the 'Shadows of Rockbourne', the reputation was slowly on the mend.

Then we began to drink and have a good time sharing stories and playing cards.

Afterwards, I decided to make a pit stop at a local jewelry store. To my surprise, the store was still open, even at this late hour. The storefront was aglow with the shimmering display of precious gemstones and exquisite craftsmanship. I couldn't resist the temptation to browse through their collection, my curiosity piqued.

Upon my return, Yuki was perched comfortably on her sofa, and it didn't take long for her to notice my unexpected delay. She remarked, "You sure have been drinking a lot lately."

I admitted with a sheepish grin, "Have I? I promise to take it easy from now on." However, it was evident that she was not in the best of moods. Her frustration was palpable as she looked away from me. I felt compelled to make amends, assuring her, "Look, I'm sorry. I promise not to go to the cave anymore, and I'll make sure our meetings happen in a different place."

Yuki's voice softened as she opened up about her feelings, saying, "I just wish you would let me be there with you. It feels like I could lose you at any moment." The depth of her concern and affection was clear.

Moved by her words, I leaned in for a tender kiss, and then, in a heartfelt moment, I got down on one knee. "Yuki," I began, "I love you more than anything in this world, and I want to be by your side forever." With a flourish, I presented a stunning gold ring adorned with a brilliant white jewel. "Will you marry me?"

Yuki's reaction was beyond my expectations. She leaped into my arms, tears of joy streaming down her face as she exclaimed, "Yes, I will." I carefully slid the engagement ring onto her finger, and her cheeks flushed a bright shade of red. Playfully, she added, "Jerk, now I have to forgive you."

We spent the remainder of the night nestled together, holding hands, and gazing into the dancing flames of the fire.

The next day we headed to a familiar cafe, where Ryuu and Ash waited.

Yuki and I shared a special secret, our hearts racing with anticipation. Yuki’s dear friend, Ash, and her brother Ryuu, were about to learn that our lives were about to take a beautiful turn.

Yuki played with a small box on the coffee table, her fingers trembling slightly. I stole a glance at Ash, Yuki's closest friend and confidant, and felt a reassuring connection with her. I knew she would be thrilled to hear the news we were about to disclose.

"Ash," Yuki began, her voice laced with excitement, "You know how deeply Yuki and I care for each other, and, well... we have some wonderful news."

Ash, leaning forward in eager anticipation, had a knowing glint in her eye. "Don't leave us hanging, you two! What's the big news?"

With a smile, I squeezed Yuki's hand, offering her strength. "We're going to have a baby," I shared, my voice quivering with a blend of happiness and a touch of nervousness.

Ash's eyes lit up like stars in the night sky. "Oh my goodness! That's amazing!" Her enthusiasm was infectious, and she couldn't help but express her joy. "I'm going to be an auntie!"

Yuki and I couldn't help but share a fond smile at Ash's enthusiasm. However, there was more to reveal. Yuki continued, "But there's another piece of news. We've decided to get married."

I joined in, my voice brimming with affection, "And we've chosen to have the wedding in my hometown, Lakeheaven. March is such a beautiful time there."

As Ryuu acknowledged our plans, there was a touch of solemnity in his expression. He voiced his concerns, apologizing, "I want to say sorry, Yuri. My mother... she's not entirely on board with your relationship and the upcoming wedding. I hope this doesn't overshadow your happiness."

Ash, still brimming with excitement, laid a reassuring hand on Ryuu's shoulder, providing comfort and support. "It will work out, Ryuu. Love has a way of conquering all, right?"

Ryuu nodded. He turned his gaze to us, offering a heartfelt smile. "Congratulations to both of you. We'll be there in Lakeheaven to celebrate your special day."

Then the four of us embarked on a quest to find the perfect wedding dress. Ash and Yuki took the lead, striding ahead, leaving Ryuu and me alone, trailing a few steps behind.

As we strolled through the streets, Ryuu turned to me, a hint of concern in his eyes, and asked, "Why'd you do Yuri, Why did you kill Akira?" My hands began to quiver, and a familiar sense of trepidation washed over me. It was the same fear that had once engulfed me when I confronted Wildcard.

With a deep breath, I inquired, "What are you talking about, Ryuu?" His fingers instinctively tightened around the hilt of his sword.

Ryuu's gaze bore into mine, searching for the truth. I maintained my composure and asserted, "You and I both know that I lack the skill to kill him. I was there that night, but I did not kill Akira."

He seemed to relax slightly, his grip on the sword loosening. "I believe you," Ryuu admitted. "Just promise me that your involvement with The Shadows won't bring any harm to my sister."

With a determined look, I nodded and replied, "I swear, Ryuu. I want to change the way The Shadows operate, to make it better. Will you stand by me and help me in this endeavor?"

Ryuu's expression shifted, and he hesitated before saying, "I think you may have the wrong idea. I want no part in The Shadows." He turned and walked away.

In the fancy boutique with its delicate lace curtains and soft pastel tones, Yuki and I stood side by side, gazing at the mirror. Yuki's eyes sparkled.

I couldn't help but admire her in the dresses. “That dress looks incredible on you"

Yuki turned to me, her cheeks tinged with a rosy blush. "You really think so?" Her voice quivered with a hint of self-doubt.

I gently took her hands in mine, reassuring her, "Absolutely."

Yuki's eyes lit up, and she leaned in to give me a sweet, heartfelt kiss. "Thank you for being here with me."

After getting the beautiful white dress we said our thanks to Ryuu and ash.

At home, Yuki had a delightful surprise in store for me—a finely crafted sword, originating from the distant, snow-covered tundras where dwarfs were known to reside. The blade's exquisite craftsmanship was evident at first sight, yet my gratitude was overshadowed by concern. "Yuki, I can't help but wonder... How much did this cost?" I inquired.

With a gentle smile, Yuki reassured me, "Don't trouble yourself with that. There's something important I wish to discuss." Her tone carried a solemnity that hinted at the weight of the impending conversation. "I don't think I want to be a swordsman anymore," she admitted, her words piercing deep into my heart.

My initial reaction was to offer a swift solution, suggesting, "Perhaps, I should quit too, and we can pursue a different path together." However, Yuki swiftly intervened, placing a soft hand over my mouth, preventing me from speaking further. Her determination was evident as she asserted, "No, you must continue your journey as a swordsman, striving to become one of the greatest."

Attempting to persuade her to explore alternative avenues, I started, "But Yuki, I believe you should—" My sentence was again interrupted by Yuki, her resolve unwavering. She emphasized, "If you ever quit, I will leave you," delivering a solemn ultimatum. I nodded in agreement, silently pledging to myself that I would indeed strive to ascend the ranks and become the world's most formidable swordsman. But to be honest I don't know if i can. I couldn't even last long against Akira and with just words Ryuu was able to make me tremble.

It's been several months since I last wrote to my parents. The seasons changed, from the chill of winter to the bloom of spring, and yet I never found the time to pay them a visit. The heavy burden of my choices and the impact they have on those I hold dear has been weighing down on me more and more with each passing day.

As I tenderly rest my hand on Yuki's growing belly, I'm reminded of another responsibility I've been avoiding. Yuki, four months pregnant, carries within her the beauty of new life. Unfortunately, my preoccupation with the shadows of my past has left me with little time to contemplate our future together.

But today marks a departure from my usual routine. March has arrived, and it's time for a significant change. We've made the decision to hold our wedding in my hometown. I had proposed the idea of inviting Yuki's family to join the celebration, but she adamantly refused. It seems she has no interest in fostering a connection with them, and truth be told, I share her sentiment to some extent.

I find myself standing, busily packing our belongings and the gifts I had thoughtfully purchased, all onto the carriage I acquired with the earnings from my work alongside Eden. At this moment, I can't help but reflect on the stark contrast in my life, a year ago i was alone only focusing on my sword.

Once we had gathered all our findings, Yuki approached me, wearing that radiant smile that was her trademark. I couldn't resist the pull of her warmth and optimism, a stark contrast to the darkness that had lingered within me after my duel with Akira. Leaning down, I planted a tender kiss on her forehead, a silent but heartfelt token of gratitude for the light she'd brought into my life.

Assisting Yuki into the carriage, we set off on our journey.

As we traversed the meandering roads and picturesque landscapes, we encountered a series of events that felt almost predestined, as if fate was guiding us back home.

One of the most poignant moments occurred when we arrived at Elmatpass, the very place where Yuki and I had crossed paths for the first time. The sun illuminated the day, and the sight of that familiar tavern flooded me with a wave of memories. Stepping inside, it felt like stepping into a time capsule. The cozy atmosphere enveloped us, welcoming and comforting, much as it had years ago.

I couldn't resist the allure of the same table where I had celebrated my 17th birthday. A smile crept onto my face as Yuki playfully recounted the details of our initial awkward introduction, the way our words stumbled and our hearts raced. It was a sweet and endearing moment, a reminder of the incredible journey we had embarked on since that fateful chance encounter.

As we continued our journey through the enchanting countryside, we stumbled upon a hidden gem – a vibrant and lively festival in a quaint, little village. The air was filled with the melodies of traditional music, and our feet couldn't resist the rhythm, leading us to join in a joyous dance. The flavors of local delicacies tingled our taste buds, enriching our senses with the authenticity of the region. It was a delightful and unexpected experience that added vivid colors to the tapestry of our trip.

During our travels, we also encountered an opportunity to lend a helping hand. A kind farmer found himself stranded on the roadside with a broken-down cart. Without hesitation, we offered our assistance. In gratitude for our aid, he gifted us a splendid basket overflowing with freshly picked fruits, their fragrance perfuming the air as we continued on our way.

After days of winding travel, we finally reached my hometown, Lakehaven. A wave of nostalgia washed over me as I gazed at the familiar sights. "Lakehaven, you never change; it's been too long," I murmured, reflecting on my return to the place I had called home, now after nearly two years of absence.

Yuki leaned gently against me. She observed, "You sure love your hometown, Yuri." A warm smile spread across my face in response to her insightful comment. "Yeah," I acknowledged, "this humble town has imparted invaluable lessons upon me."

"I wonder if your family will accept me," Yuki inquired, her gaze momentarily diverted, clearly concerned about the reception she might receive from my family. Throughout her school years, Yuki had not been the most popular student, and this gave rise to certain insecurities about how she would fit in. With a reassuring smile, I offered her comfort, saying, "Don't worry, they will, especially my grandfather. He's a great man."

This mention of my grandfather piqued Yuki's interest, as I had seldom shared stories about him. I proceeded to paint a heartfelt portrait of the man who had played a pivotal role in shaping my life. I described how he had been the unwavering pillar of support for my aspiration to become a swordsman, even stepping in to teach me when my father was absent.
