The Troll

Echo found herself in a heavily wooded area as the light around her faded. The menu prompt had disappeared, leaving her without a hint as to what to do next. The only thing in her possession was the book she held. The characters on the cover had shifted to English and now read; "Players Guide to Starting Life in a New World." She cracked the book open to the first page, which read as her translation suggested. The number of Players that had made the transition rested at 20/20. The next few pages were a table of contents, the first chapter, "The Basics."

Have you found yourself in a strange location? Have you seen creatures that don't match your common fauna? If you answered yes to either of these questions and considering you are reading this book, it is safe to assume that you have been transported to a new world.

This book aims to make your integration with the new realm as seamless as possible. Inside you will find resources that outline the basic combat methods shared with members of the new world. You will find yourself able to open a menu to view your status and skills which you have acquired. To open simply speak the phrase, "Menu" with intent.

"Well, might as well give it a shot." Echo chided into the chilled forest air, "Menu."

The status window appeared and gave details that seemed foreign to the girl.

She pressed on an icon to close the menu and think about her surroundings. This thing said she was an Elf, which she knew to be false. What were these numbers supposed to represent? She wandered through the forest for what felt like a few hours. She could not make out the sun through the trees, though as it began to warm up, she figured it was still early morning.

As Echo proceeded into a clearing, she was able to get a good look at the sky for the first time. She noticed strange birds unlike those she had come in contact with during her life on Earth.

"This is so bizarre," she spoke aloud while scanning the sky.

She spotted a plume of smoke rising to the East and decided to investigate for a closer look. The girl did her best to travel stealthily, for she did not know what to expect. Nearing the source of the smoke, she could see the opening of a cave in the hillside. A large bonfire sat outside, burning brightly. Upon not seeing anyone, she moved closer. Seemingly the fire had been burning for a few hours, the remaining fire lighting the end of already burned wood.

"Hello? Is there anyone here?" She asked with no response.

The walk had made her rather hungry, increased when she spotted a lot of fish roasting by the side of the fire. She knelt and pulled one of the skewered fish from the ground by the stake and gave it a sniff. The scent of cooked fish filled her nose and she began to eat immediately. The taste was like that of the freshwater fish that was often caught and sold in her city. A lack of seasoning made the fish a bit depressing to eat, though it filled her all the same.

"Who's there?!" Boomed a loud voice from within the cave.

Heavy footsteps followed the outburst as Echo found herself staring at the being who was exiting the cave. It stood at least seven feet tall and was covered with sickly blue skin. It wore nothing save the loincloth which gave her an open view of the size of the obese creature. Behind it, it carried a large sword which had to be a few inches taller than the thing.

"I was just passing through and noticed your fire! I was hoping to find directions to the closest town." She said in a friendly, yet cautious manner.

"What are a little Elf like you doing in the Ocet Woods?" The being licked his lips as he spoke, the disgusting action causing him to spit at her.

"I'll actually be on my way if you don't..." She said gingerly before being cut off.

"Oh no, lass! I has been eating fish for far too long. I'll throw you in the troll pot next!" The troll shouted eagerly, beginning a lumbering charge towards her.

She turned to run and started to dodge between trees. Her speed was nearly matched by the strides the monster was making. Gods if I only had a weapon..What then? I couldn't stand a chance against that thing. She could hear that large metallic blade landing against trees behind her while she ran blind. The troll seemed to frenzy, his sword flashing around with very poor accuracy.

Echo lost her breath as she was hit with the flat of the blade on one of the troll's pullbacks. She was lifted from her feet and sailed into a nearby tree. She coughed when she hit the ground and looked at the prompt that had appeared before her.

You have 1 HP remaining! You need healing!

Damn! I need a weapon...a sword! Anything! She thought hard as she looked through her memories for what she was sure to be the last time. Finally, her thoughts landed on one final thing; the sword which was going to take her life in only moments. She closed her eyes and listened at the crazed laugh of the charging monster.

"Huh? Where?!" The troll yelled, a twinge of irritation in his confused tone.

Echo opened her eyes and found the sword he had been wielding, lying on the ground beside her. She reached for the handle hesitantly and was greeted with another prompt.

She blinked for a moment while reading the menu. Her low health indicator had vanished and she felt the weight of the greatsword lessen in her grasp. The troll locked eyes on her and scowled, flicking between his sword and her. The blade was rough-cut metal, fashioned into a durable, straight-bladed weapon.

"Give me back the sword! Stupid Elves and their magicks!" The troll grumbled and charged at her.

"Oh, please work." Echo shouted while spinning on her heels and bringing the sword around in a quick disc motion.

Upon being level with the troll, she let out a grunt and let go of the sword. The blade spiraled towards the monster, sinking the blade in nearly two-quarters of its length. The troll fell to a knee and then forward onto the blade with a heavy slam. The fight was over and Echo stood there motionless for a moment. The troll did not move which prompted the girl to move forward. She lifted under his heavy mass and attempted to roll him. Normally this would be out of the realm of reality though, with the new Might boost, it was easier for her to get him off the sword. She picked up the sword and it suddenly vanished.

Congratulations! Thanks to your "Call Greatsword" skill, you may now call the "Troll Greatsword" from your inventory in an instant!

She searched the troll and came with nothing but a few gold coins. Echo traveled into the cave very slowly and looked around. Fishbones lay all around the room along with a few human-like skeletons. The only thing she found was a vial with a red liquid, discarded in the corner.
