Prologue: The Rising Star

Prologue: The Rising Star

Darian was very upset at the moment.

How did my life turn out like this? I'm supposed to be an adventurer, not a criminal. I should not be here.

The reason Darian was upset was that he was about to enter the Galalador city Arena. Now that alone was not enough to make someone upset, in fact, many people went to the Arena quite happily. However, this was often the case when you went to watch the fights. This was not the case for Darian.

Darian had been born to an average family of farmers. He would wake up every day and help his parents with their work. At the age of 18 Darian had decided that he wanted to become an adventurer. Darian was sure that he could earn a better living than working on a farm, he had heard that adventurers make lots of money. Much to the dismay of his parents Darian left the farm to go to Galalador city, the nearest branch of the adventurer’s guild.

That was the third worst decision Darian made in his entire life.

There were 3 reasons why Darian should not have become an adventurer. The first being that Darian had never fought a single thing in his entire life. This was a problem because an adventurer’s main source of income was slaying monsters. The second problem was that Darian only had a small amount of money. As a farmer the only tools one needed were seeds and plows, but as an adventurer one needed equipment. Weapons, armor, potions and a variety of other things were needed to make monster slaying possible. The third (and most important) reason Darian’s choice was bad was because he was not level 25 yet. Before level 25 humans could not have a class as such they could not have any ability’s and their stats would be very low.

This is what the receptionist told Darian when he tried to become and adventurer at the guild. However, these things did not phase Darian.

Never fought a monster in his life

“Why not start now?”

Not level 25

“I will just level up”

No money

“I will just borrow some”

Borrowing money was the second worst decision Darian made in his life.

As he was not level 25 yet Darian was made into a F class adventurer, a low level rookie who stopped rat infestations and did manual labor. This did not pay very well and most of the money Darian made went to food, shelter, and the greedy loan shark he had borrowed money from. Darian had needed 130 gold for the most basic Iron sword and leather armor. The deal he had made was that he would be loaned 130 gold for his equipment but every week the amount he would need to pay back increased by 10 gold.

The deal sounded nice when he had signed the contract but in reality it was a total scam. As an F class adventurer Darian only made about 15 gold a week, taking into account the interest as well as the food Darian ate and the run down inn he slept in he was only making 1 gold a week.

After this tortuous life style lasted for about six months Darian had hit level 25 and chose the swordsman class. With this he became a rank E adventurer and he was able to take up higher paying jobs. Darian chose to team up with three other rank E adventurers and they toke on a mission to destroy a goblin encampment. However during the battle Darian took an arrow to the stomach.

This injury left him unable to work. No work meant no money. No money meant the loan shark’s thugs came for him and brought him to court. As a debtor he was treated as a criminal and under the law the loan shark gained full control over him. This was how Darian was about to enter the arena.

This can’t be happening i’m not a criminal. If anything I’m the victim.

Darian’s train of thought was broken when an announcer started to speak

“On the blue side of the arena we have a new contestant entering the arena, he is a brave man who entered the arena to pay off his debts to Lord Varsuvious, a swordsman at the level of 25, please welcome Darian!”

The gate in front of Darian slowly opened to reveal a large circular arena with four pillars around the center. On the other side Darian could see a gate that looked liked the one he was standing in except the flags that surrounded it were red instead of blue.”

“On the red side of the arena we have a crowd favorite, a man born into the arena who has never lost a match, he has won his last 11 matches by brutally beating his opponents to death with his mace, please welcome Slagthor the merciless”

Wait, beat them to death?

On the other side of the arena Darian could see a muscular man covered in blood soaked leather armor. The places where his skin was visible had various scars and battle wounds. The man called Slagthor had back disheveled hair and sharp blue eyes.

Am I going to die, I can’t let that happen. I’m so young I never even had a girlfriend.

Darian was trembling, he couldn’t move. Slagthor slowly approached him from the other side of the arena.

The crowd was going wild “Slagthor! Slagthor! Slagthor!” They chanted as their champion walk across the arena.

Darian had not moved and now Slagthor was only five feet away from him.

This is when Darian got an idea

“Listen if you don’t kill me I will let you win the match”

Darian said this as he placed his blade on the ground.

Slagthor smiled

Darian had just made the worst mistake of his entire life
