Chapter 10 - The Start of a Path

Simon said that Intelligence and Wisdom are important for me but right now my Wisdom is a lot lower than my Intelligence. If I add 30 points to Wisdom it’ll become 100 and then I can add 28 to Intelligence to make it 130. As for the last two, hmm, they can go to Dexterity. I haven’t had a need for much Dexterity but having more can’t hurt.

Now that I’ve spent 60 Stat Points, I need to spend some Skill points. I don’t have any level 15 skills so I can level up almost anything. There’s [Ancient Enchanting], [Identify], even [Stealth] if I wanted.

Wait, I feel like I’m forgetting something about Skill Points. Hm, they can be used for leveling up skills but can they do anything else? I never asked Simon so did Cyrus tell me anything?

Looking through the knowledge Cyrus gave me, it doesn’t seem like… wait, there is something. You can spend Skill Points to purchase General Skills which if I remember correctly, my General Skills merged with Personal Skills into the Skills category. Does that change what I can purchase?

Well, let me check what I can buy. I won’t know if anything’s different but that’s fine.

Available Tier 1 General Skills: Mana Absorption Lv. 1, Mana Efficiency Lv. 1, Magic Resistance Lv. 1, Physical Resistance Lv. 1, Swipe Lv. 1, Bite Lv. 1, Dash Lv. 1

Available Tier 2 General Skills: Mana Transmutation Lv. 1, Elemental Resistance Lv. 1, Pain Resistance Lv. 1, Commanding Presence Lv. 1, Basic Communication Lv. 1

Tier 3 General Skills and above are locked due to not meeting the evolution requirement.

Oh, some of these seem very useful while I don’t know what others do. [Bite], [Swipe], [Mana Efficiency], the resistances, and [Dash] are self-explanatory. [Mana Absorption] and [Basic Communication] are a bit more abstract and I can only make some guesses. [Commanding Presence] and [Mana Transmutation] don’t make much sense.

So what exactly do I need? [Mana Efficiency] and [Magic Resistance] are definitely needed because I might die if I run out of mana and most of the damage I can take comes from magic. [Basic Communication] may be useful if it can let me understand the noises the people make. The physical skills like [Swipe] don’t have any use to me according to Simon’s information. So what about [Mana Absorption], [Mana Transmutation], and the other resistances?

Can I check what the two mana skills do?

[Reality Sight]

Skill: Mana Absorption Lv. 1

Description: A skill that aids the owner in absorbing mana in their surroundings to replenish their own mana. If a high enough level it may be possible to take mana from other living beings or from cast spells. This skill is passive.

Use: Absorbs mana from outside the owner and turns it into their own.

Skill: Mana Transmutation Lv. 1

Description: A skill that aids in the conversion of the user’s mana into another type or element. Automatically activates when the user is converting mana.

Use: Makes the process of converting mana more efficient.

Well I think I need [Mana Absorption] since it makes my mana regeneration better. [Mana Transmutation] doesn’t seem very useful right now. Perhaps later but currently I don’t need to convert my mana into another type.

So all that’s left is the other resistance skills, [Commanding Presence], and [Basic Communication].

I could use [Elemental Resistance] but I already have [Magic Resistance] so it’s not that useful I think. [Pain Resistance] would make me resistant to pain but I’ve never felt pain so I’m unsure how useful it is. [Physical Resistance] would only help when I’m in my physical form so it can be ignored for now.

Alright, that’s all of the resistances done so now I need to decide on [Basic Communication] and [Commanding Presence]. What exactly do they do?

[Reality Sight]

Skill: Commanding Presence Lv. 1

Description: You make people around you feel as if you’re a leader and cause them to be more willing to follow your commands. Higher levels increase the effectiveness. This skill is passive.

Use: Lowers the mental resistance of people around you allowing you to give them commands.

Skill: Basic Communication Lv. 1

Description: Automatically translates common languages into something understandable for the user. Also allows for the user to speak in common languages. Higher levels increase the clarity of the translation for both speaking and listening. This skill is passive and active.

Use: Passively allows the user to understand spoken common languages. Can be activated for the user to speak in common languages.

So of these two I only need [Basic Communication]. [Commanding Presence] has no use to me as I have no wish to be a leader.

Now, how many Skill Points do these skills cost?

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

Tier 1 General Skills require one skill point, Tier 2 General Skills require two skill points, Tier 3 General Skills require four skill points, and so on until Tier 5.

Well that’s convenient, so for [Magic Resistance], [Mana Absorption], [Basic Communication], and [Mana Efficiency] I will need five Skill Points. Not too expensive.

So I have ten Skill Points left and a lot of skills I could spend them on. What exactly do I want? I can level up the spells that I have besides Earth spells. I can level up [Identify], [Reality Sight], or [Inspect]. I could level up any of my new skills, my racial skills, my created skills, or my only upgradeable unique skill. There’s also the two skills made for hiding and being unseen, [Quiet Casting] and [Stealth].

Well, [Identify] is worse than [Reality Sight] so it can be ignored. Although I was using [Lava Ball] a bit it doesn’t help me with gathering knowledge so it isn’t that important. My Illusion spells could be useful, I do wonder if I could make a perfect mana clone and [Lesser Illusion of a Spell] allows me to see random spells every time I cast it but I don’t know what leveling it up would change.

There is also [Ancient Enchanting] but I think that leveling up my new skills is more useful. [Basic Communication] is the most useful but the two mana skills are also nice for allowing me to learn new spells easier.

If I spend five points on [Basic Communication] to get it to level three and then two points for each of the mana skills I’ll be left with one point which isn’t enough for anything besides buying a new skill.

Now that I’ve spent my Stat Points and Skill Points, what exactly has happened?

When I started thinking about what to do, Simon and the other people were cleaning up the arena. Now the entire arena was dark. It wasn’t because it was night, I could see mostly fine if it was, but it felt like something was intentionally obscuring my vision.

“After seeing how you fight I’ve decided to make a bit of a change to what I said earlier. It might be better for you to focus on two things. The first is acquiring spells that are fast and hidden. The second is to get some more skills relating to stealth.” I heard Simon’s voice in my head as he used [Telepathy].

He did say that [Stealth] was useless to me earlier didn’t he? I wonder how him changing what he said relates to the arena.

“Currently the entire arena is filled with a Dark spell known as [Concealing Fog]. It hides anything within the fog and prevents them from being seen unless you get close to that thing. I want you to use this fog and steal a folder placed somewhere in the fog without being found. Once you can do this we will move on to the next step.” Simon said and then stayed silent.

Hm, isn’t this just a really big illusion? It isn’t Illusion magic but it does hide something by making you see fog so I think it counts. Now then, does [Reality Sight] work and allow me to see through it?

Activating [Reality Sight] did allow me to see much farther than before but because it was too low level, [Concealing Fog] was too high level, or the fog didn’t really count as an illusion, I couldn’t see through all of the fog.

In front of me were a few people wandering around. I assume these were the people trying to find me.

Looking around I didn’t see anything else but directly behind me I could see a faint shimmer as if something was there but didn’t exist.

Focusing on it allowed me to see it better and a message popped up.

Name: Simon Krol

Level: 100+

Race: Human

Title: Royal Knight of King Tevis

Description: The most trusted Royal Knight of King Tevis. Mainly uses a bow and arrows but knows how to use blades and dwarven technologies as well. One of the strongest beings in the far southeast of the continent of Falen.

Oh, so that’s where Simon is. Hmm, can I make him any clearer?

Focusing more and more on him caused him to become more and more real until I could make out the shape of the things he had.

On his back was his bow along with his quiver, at his waist was a small sheath probably for a dagger and in his hand was a rectangle that seemed very flat.

Wait, isn’t that a folder? Does he have the folder?

I started walking towards Simon as he stood there most likely watching me. When I was standing in front of him he still just continued to watch. The folder he was holding was just a bit above me so I crouched down and got ready to jump.

“What exactly are you trying to do? You were supposed to go the other way. The only thing in that direction is a wall.” Simon told me in an amused tone.

Hmm, Simon’s a liar. Ignoring him I just need to jump to get the folder.

3… 2… 1… Jump!

As I jumped, Simon reacted and started moving away but it was too late and I managed to grab the folder in my teeth.

I turned to look at him with the folder in my mouth and saw that he had lost the shimmer surrounding him.

His expression was one of annoyance and I soon heard his words in my mind, “You were supposed to go searching while avoiding the guards. Once you had proven to me that you could sneak around well I would place the folder near you. I’m not sure how you even saw through my [Invisibility] but I would assume it has something to do with your evolution. Ah well, I suppose we can move onto the next test. Follow me.”

He started walking towards what I assume was the exit and I followed him.

*****

It was indeed the exit and we ended up outside of the arena and in the street where there was still some damage that needed to be repaired.

Simon kept walking but also started talking to me, “The next test is for you to find a spy hidden in the city. There are quite a few and it shouldn’t be too hard if you know what to do. However, there are some things you’re going to need to know. The first is that this is the Kingdom of Faler and Faler is the Goddess of the Unknown. The second is that we are at war with the Forest Kingdom of Levayin which is made up entirely of Half-Elves and Elves. Any of the spies you look for will be one of those two Races however, our kingdom is more open and we do allow Elves and Half-Elves as citizens so there isn’t a guarantee they will be a spy just based on their Race. Use this information to find a spy, it doesn’t matter if they flee or not.”

After saying so he walked back into the arena.

I didn’t follow him as I was wondering about what he said.

First of all, this kingdom seems to either be the property of a goddess or worships that goddess. Secondly, it seems like the information about my Race and Racial Skills is somewhat hidden. Lastly, it shouldn’t be too hard to find a spy but there’s also no time limit so it might be difficult.

I wonder if [Reality Sight] could help again. It gives a description for living beings so perhaps it can tell if someone is a spy. Hmm, I don’t know about that last part so I’m going to do something more interesting. In the knowledge I got from my evolution there was a mention of a library where knowledge is stored in physical form. I just need to find it.

*****

“Where… library?” I tried using [Basic Communication] and I’m not entirely sure how well it worked but the person responded.

“334 Simon Street.”

Wow, Simon has a street named after him. I wonder why… Anyways, which building is 334?
