Chapter 20 – Using Magic in Combat

Whoooooosh

Boom

Basil was fleeing from the jaws of the giant ‘Gluttonous Snake King’ at an incredible speed, without stopping.

The Gluttonous Snake King attempted to bite Basil, who was pressed against the wall. Basil dodged, and as he did, the snake’s fangs sunk into the wall.

The Gluttonous Snake King slowly began to pull its fangs from the wall, and when Basil saw the damage it had caused, he was utterly shocked. He would surely die from such an attack; the fangs pierced the wall as if it were a piece of bread, leaving behind deep holes.

Although this shocked Basil, he wasn’t afraid of it. He quickly gathered himself and said, “Well, that’s enough for testing my physical strength. Now, let’s move on to using magic.”

As soon as Basil finished speaking, a light blue energy, close to white, enveloped his body. This energy was very calm and not turbulent at all, and after a few moments, the space between it and Basil began to shrink little by little until it nearly disappeared.

The energy was like a thin thread around Basil’s body, and the previous color faded significantly.

Basil dashed toward the Gluttonous Snake King, leaving slight deep impressions where he had taken off. He reached the side of the Gluttonous Snake King in an instant and kicked it. Boom The massive snake cried out in pain.

Shreeeeek

However, the strike didn’t affect it much, and it lunged toward Basil to bite him. But its attack failed as Basil jumped backward to evade it.

Basil smiled widely; he wasn’t tense at all like he had been during his first fight against the deep bears. In this last year, he had undergone grueling training, and among that, the Deep Dark Valley was the easiest. After he emerged from it and resumed training under his teacher’s guidance, he had no time to rest, getting only three hours of sleep each day.

When the teacher began training Anmar in magic, he told Basil to inform his mother that he wouldn’t return for another two months. This continued until the end of the year of physical training.

Basil was thrilled because he was finally using magic in his confrontation with a monster. As he dodged the enormous snake and took his time to enjoy it, he evaded the next attack.

The snake withdrew its fangs from the ground and let out a terrifying roar. It was at the peak of its rage; this rodent in front of it did not want to die or move out of its way.

The eyes of the Gluttonous Snake King glimmered red as it looked at Basil. When Basil met the gaze of his enemy, he became frozen in place and could no longer move, and the energy surrounding him vanished.

The Gluttonous Snake King finally used its mind magic, immobilizing Basil. It seemed to have controlled Basil's mind, preventing him from moving.

The massive snake lunged at the frozen Basil.

Whoooooosh

The fangs drew close to Basil and nearly bit him, but at the last moment, an explosion sent the Gluttonous Snake flying backward.

Boom

A concentrated fire erupted from Basil’s body just as the fangs were about to bite him.

Panting, panting… That was close, Basil gasped, panting and sweating profusely. He could see everything happening before his eyes, but he couldn’t move no matter what he did.

As the Gluttonous Snake King approached him with its fangs, Basil had no choice but to activate his second magic.

“It seems I will finally need both elements now to defeat him. When I kicked him, he didn’t seem affected much. I know I didn’t strike him with all my might, but I was using ‘Enhancement’ magic at that moment. His body is truly tough. If I hadn’t used ‘Fire’ magic, I would surely be dead.”

The massive snake stood up and let out an even louder roar.

Shreeeeek

Every time Basil hindered it and wasted its time, its anger grew. But apparently, that wasn’t the only reason. After Basil defeated it, the snake felt humiliated.

Basil activated ‘Enhancement’ magic again and began moving from place to place, letting the approaching snake determine his location. The Gluttonous Snake King surged forward with greater speed than before to match Basil's speed, which had reached a new level.

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh

As Basil fled, he shot small fire arrows at the massive snake, but they merely struck its body without penetrating. A small fire ignited on the Gluttonous Snake King’s body, but it extinguished it by blowing on it.

Boom

Basil kicked the Gluttonous Snake King with all his strength this time, sending it flying like it had done to him in the previous explosion, crashing into the wall.

In the meantime, Basil gathered his magic, placing his arm horizontally toward the enemy with his fist open. A small fireball appeared in front of his hand and slowly grew until it reached a diameter of one meter. He then launched it at the Gluttonous Snake King.

Booooooom

The fireball exploded on the enemy, igniting a massive blaze.

Shreeeeek

The enormous snake cried out in misery as it burned in the fire surrounding its body.

“Did you think I cast those arrows earlier trying to achieve a result from the attack? Ha ha, they were just bait to confirm my suspicion. You can’t withstand fire at all.”

The snake stood engulfed in flames and roared angrily Shreeeeek as its eyes glowed red, using mind magic. Basil relaxed his defenses slightly when he executed his attack, and when he saw his enemy standing up again, he was taken aback and forgot to avert his gaze.

Basil’s eyes locked with those of the Gluttonous Snake King, and he was controlled once more.

Basil cursed himself for relaxing his defenses. He had believed that after his long training, he had learned that fighting against monsters doesn’t end until one side dies. But it seemed he forgot himself due to the euphoria of fighting with magic.

The Gluttonous Snake King slowly advanced toward its enemy. Its body was in a pitiful state, but after a moment, it blew fiercely on the flames until they extinguished from its body, and then something strange began to happen.

The Gluttonous Snake King started to shed its old, burned skin and slithered out slowly until it was completely free, its body fully healed.

Finally, Basil broke free from the control and sighed with relief, saying, “It seems it has a time limit for control, and since I have two magics, it was quicker.”

While Basil was under the effect of mind magic, he was watching everything unfold. He was shocked by what the Gluttonous Snake King had done. It appeared that the enemy had a trump card that allowed it to heal itself quickly, even though it wasn’t magic or anything but rather a unique ability it possessed as a monster.

The massive snake readied itself to resume the battle, and Basil did the same.

“Stop!” The teacher’s voice interrupted Basil, creating a barrier between them and the Gluttonous Snake King. He then said, “Boy Basil, it seems you didn’t notice; your magical energy has already depleted.”

“Ah…” At that moment, Basil finally noticed and continued, “Thank you, teacher. I almost met my end.”

The teacher said, “No problem, but from now on, you need to keep track of your energy levels and consider them carefully. Know how to use them well without wasting any.”

Basil replied, “Understood, teacher.”

The teacher continued, “Now drink this ‘Healing Elixir’; it will speed up your energy recovery.”

Basil took the drink from his teacher, drank it, and then, following his teacher’s orders, went to fetch some food.

Basil returned with many ‘Gnawing Rats,’ lit a fire, and began cooking the meat he had extracted and purified.

While the two ate, the teacher remarked as he sipped the soup, “Oh, it seems you’ve improved since before.”

Basil was waiting for his teacher’s response and felt delighted upon hearing it.

After they finished, Basil sat quietly and focused intensely when the teacher interrupted him, “Get up, boy Basil; it’s time.”

Basil opened his eyes and moved toward the Gluttonous Snake King, which had gone completely mad due to the barrier keeping it from escaping. Its hunger and anger were at their peak.

The teacher removed the barrier, and the massive snake rushed wildly toward Basil. Basil dodged it at the last moment but didn’t show any fear on his face, even when the enemy followed him with madness and its eyes shining red. He closed his eyes and continued to evade the attacks one after the other.

Basil was using ‘Enhancement’ magic at full strength to avoid the attacks, as enhancement magic not only boosts physical strength but all senses. This allowed Basil to dodge the Gluttonous Snake King’s attacks with his eyes closed.

Boom

Basil leaped toward the Gluttonous Snake King and came down with a kick using all his might.

Shreeeeek

The enemy cried out in pain, but it quickly twisted around to attack Basil.

Basil evaded the attack, letting the massive snake bite itself. In that moment, Basil approached the enemy again and gestured with his palm toward it, making a small fireball appear that then began to grow. This time, however, the way it grew was different; it expanded into a large, wide arrow reaching three meters in length. Basil then launched it at the Gluttonous Snake King, who was still struggling.

Boooooooom

The snake screamed in agony as it began to fall.

“It’s over!” Basil shouted, exerting all the power he could muster and jumping high into the air, launching another fireball at the Gluttonous Snake King while still hanging in the air.

Boom

Basil’s final fireball struck the snake squarely on its head, exploding fiercely as it finally fell to the ground.

The dust settled, revealing the body of the Gluttonous Snake King lying motionless. Basil stood above it, panting heavily, and could only whisper, “I did it.”

The teacher approached and said, “You’ve done well, but there’s still much to improve. Always remember, monsters are creatures driven by instincts, so don’t be lenient or overconfident. You must always remain vigilant.”

Basil nodded in response, feeling as if he were gaining a new perspective as he stood next to the teacher. After this battle, Basil realized that magic was indeed a useful weapon, but he couldn’t depend solely on it. He needed to continue honing his skills, both magical and physical.
