Chapter 9 - Selection (2)

“I don’t understand. What do you mean?” Argus asked.

“This is what the Purge is all about. We as divine beings are too great to experience and get to know the extremities of a planet. The Purge strips you of your divinity and makes you do it.” Mephisto explained.

“So? What’s bad about giving a little help?”

“That would defeat the purpose of the Purge. It means that I have to find a way myself to find True Harmony. It’s not even known what the interference of a higher being will do to the process. That’s why even if I’m on the brink of death, you must not help me.” Mephisto sounded very determined.

The fact is that even after being the one to have created the planet. He could not predict how the law of evolution would take its course. It was one of the things that Moderators had themselves set as a random variable. It’s also because the law of evolution is meant to be random. Though the difference in topographies and the climatic conditions would have effect on how the beings would evolve but after a while when the living beings adapt to their planet they start to evolve further into more capable beings. Taking into consideration of that fact Mephisto’s words seemed carefully placed.

“Well. I never thought I would say this but, I understand. Now that I know that you have thought of this so deeply, I think that you might be able to pull it off. Maybe you will lead us to eternal wisdom.”

“Thanks friend.” Mephisto was happy.

“By the way. Do you know why this planet was chosen for the Purge?” Mephisto asked.

“No. I just as much in the dark as you. Honestly speaking, from above the planet looks fine to me. It doesn’t seem like a world that would need something like a Purge. But you never know. You tell me, you are the creator of this one.”

“I can’t be sure. I haven’t explored this planet all that much to know too much about it in depth.” Mephisto honestly replied.

“Well either way you have to continue.” Argus said.

“Oh and just so you know, I know that you cheated in our match that time.” Mephisto said.

There was not a single hint of resentment or anger in his voice.

“But it’s OK. At least I get to help my own creation thrive and succeed than let any one of you do it.”

Argus laughed “Maybe that’s why I cheated.”

“Also you might need to wake up soon. The time flow is different here than on your planet right?” Argus warned him before disappearing.

Mephisto opened his eyes slowly. He was physically rested but mentally tired.

[It’s a bad way to start today.]

But he still got up quickly. He didn’t want to hear another lecture from Kris after all. After eating he went to same location as the day before.

He was surprised to see Kris waiting there for him.

[That’s it. I’m done for.]

“Well. You sure take your sweet time.” Kris was already annoyed.

“I’m really sorry. I promise it won’t happen again.” Mephisto took on the defensive from the beginning.

“Well alright hurry up and get to it.”

Kris gave him the same crystal ball that she gave him the day before.

Mephisto focused again and tried to force out his mana onto the crystal ball. But the results of the previous day were repeated.

Suddenly Kris spoke up “Tell me Mephisto, do you fear something? Something that you can’t achieve. Something that you won’t be able to protect. Do you fear death?”

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“What do mean by that? I don’t understand.” Mephisto replied.

“Because one of the above reason is blocking you power to channel your mana.” Kris was very analytical.

“It’s one of the main reasons that we lose so many battles. Our soldiers start fearing death and other things when they get a proper glimpse of the other races’ prowess. So many people die because of this and honestly I’m sick and tired of witnessing it. So let me ask you once again; is there something you fear.”

Mephisto was shocked from this sudden change in the atmosphere.

“Well more than me I fear this planet dying.” Mephisto said.

“What? The planet?” Kris heard it right but couldn’t make out its meaning.

“Yeah. The planet. I fear that this planet will die. That we will never find peace. Can we really best the other races?” Mephisto broke down.

After a while Kris replied “That’s not for you to decide is it?”

Mephisto was surprised by that answer.

“All you can do now is walk the walk, not talk the talk. You get it? And regarding this planet, I think it’s one of the finest creation in this entire cosmos. I personally think that it can some survive some riff raff here and there. Don’t you?”

Hearing this, Mephisto fell into a deep thought.

[If the people here can have this positive attitude, then how could I as the creator of that cosmos have such thoughts. Even hasn’t even been one month and I have already started thinking about giving up. Just because I didn’t face any hardships until now doesn’t mean that when I do I’ll just give up.]

“Hey great thinker. Are you done or what?” Kris slipped back to her sarcastic tone.

“Yeah I’m ready now.”

“Good. I like that voice. You seem to have worked up with whatever was on your mind.”

Mephisto closed his eyes and focused in his hand. This time however he freed his mind. He could now feel his own mana flowing within his body.

Kris who was watching him from a distance started to shiver. She saw that Mephisto was totally enveloped in a golden aura. It certainly was mana. But the strange thing was mana does not have a physical form. The mana emitting from Mephisto was circling around him.

Kris immediately raised her hand and shot a projectile from her hand. That projectile was red in colour and exploded in the sky with a loud bang.

Within few seconds every soldier came inside that arena. Just like Kris even they were shocked. The mana projection automatically came to a halt. It seemed that Mephisto had drained all his mana. Before the generals could enter the arena, Mephisto had already drained his mana. But enough people had seen the incident to let everyone know.

“What happened Kris? You sent the distress signal.” One of the generals asked.

That’s when he saw Mephisto he said “You. You’re the kid from before aren’t you?”

“Look in his hand.” Kris said.

Everyone looked at Mephisto’s hand.

The magical crystal was emitting golden aura. It was almost blinding.

Everyone was speechless.

“What???” A confused Mephisto said.
