Chapter 27 [Home]

The conference room, usually a hub of serious discussion, now buzzes with a mix of confusion and awe. All eyes are fixed on Saria, who has shed her familiar white cat form to reveal a striking human appearance. Her long, vibrant purple twintails cascade down her back, framing bright violet eyes that sparkle with an otherworldly intelligence.

Saria, sensing the room’s bewilderment, breaks the silence with a wry smile. “Yes, I’m still the same Saria you know. Except now,” she pauses, flexing her fingers as if testing out her new form, “I can finally unleash my full powers in this world.” She crosses her arms, a gesture of confidence tinged with a hint of defensiveness.

Kai, ever the laid-back presence, leans back in his chair, a bag of potato chips rustling in his hands. Between crunches, he raises an eyebrow and asks, “How’d you even manage to cross over, Saria? Last I checked, interdimensional travel wasn’t exactly a walk in the park.”

“Another Space Absolute, of course,” Saria replies, her tone a mix of pride and nonchalance.

As if on cue, a sleek black cat materializes on Saria’s shoulder, its emerald eyes scanning the room. It’s Lucil, and her sudden appearance elicits a collective gasp from the group.

Lucil’s voice, smooth and articulate, fills the room. “My brother possessed a space attribute ornament. He assisted Saria in traversing the barrier between worlds.”

Rishia’s eyes widen as realization dawns. “Wait… does that mean…?” Her voice trails off, hesitant to voice the implication.

Saria’s expression softens, a touch of melancholy creeping into her eyes. She nods slowly. “I can’t return to my world now.” She leans back, her voice a mix of determination and resignation. “It’s a steep price, but one I’m willing to pay to finally put an end to Belzad’s reign of terror.”

Turning to Keller, she adds with a hint of vulnerability, “Which is why I find myself in need of new accommodations.”

Keller nods solemnly, understanding the weight of Saria’s sacrifice. “Of course, we’ll find you a suitable place.” He exchanges a knowing glance with Chen, who nods in agreement.

Noarin, always quick to offer support, tilts her head thoughtfully. “You know, you could always stay with us, Saria. We’ve got plenty of room.”

Saria’s lips curl into a mischievous grin. “And where would I sleep? Your bed is hardly big enough for two, and I’m not particularly fond of futons. No offense,” she adds with a wink. “Besides,” her voice takes on a teasing lilt, “I wouldn’t want to be a third wheel if you two are having a… moment.”

“Oh, shut up,” Noarin chuckles, her cheeks flushing slightly. “Man, I almost miss when I could just scoop you up in your cat form and toss you out of the room.”

The room erupts in laughter, the tension from earlier dissipating like morning mist. As I look around at my friends, their faces alight with mirth, I’m reminded of Spica’s final request in her letters: Don’t forget to smile. The bittersweet memory tugs at my heart, even as I join in the laughter.

Saria, sensing the shift in mood, straightens her posture, her expression becoming more serious. “Now that Belzad is gone," she begins, her voice carrying a note of cautious optimism, “perhaps we’ve finally steered our world away from the brink of chaos and imbalance.”

A man In military uniform raises his hand, his brow furrowed with concern. “What about Tempest? He’s still out there, isn’t he?”

Saria nods, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Without Belzad, Tempest might be reduced to a common criminal with magical powers. But make no mistake," her voice hardens, “he remains a significant threat to public safety. Apprehending him must be our priority.”

Another voice pipes up, this time from a scientist in a lab coat. “And what of the magical beasts? And Belzad’s motive for lifting the entire city?”

Lucil, her tail swishing thoughtfully, offers an explanation. “We can reasonably assume the beasts no longer pose a threat. They were manifestations of Belzad’s reality manipulation, likely created to funnel Aruta and the others towards Yosuga’s residence.”

Saria twirls a strand of her purple hair, her brow furrowed in concentration. “As for the city’s ascension… I suspect Belzad intended to harvest magical shards from the collective emotions of the entire populace.”

A contemplative silence falls over the room, each person grappling with the implications of these revelations.

I raise my hand, a question that’s been nagging at me finally finding voice. “What becomes of the shards if they aren’t condensed into a magic circuit?”

Lucil’s emerald eyes lock onto mine. “They simply dissipate over time,” she explains, her voice calm and measured. “Without a host to channel their power, they diffuse into the air, gradually depleting their magical energy.”

“I see…” I lean back, my mind racing with possibilities. The thought of another resonator being born from this chaos both intrigues and unsettles me.

Saria’s penetrating gaze finds mine, as if reading my thoughts. Her voice is gentle but firm as she says, “If you’re concerned about the birth of another Resonator, Aruta, let me put your mind at ease. The creation of a Resonator requires more than just loose magical shards. Without an artificial body specifically designed to condense and channel that power, no new Resonator will come into being.”

Kai leans forward, his eyes glinting with curiosity. “Hey, shouldn’t we address the elephant in the room? Aruta’s new technique?” His voice carries a mix of excitement and concern.

“Ah, yes,” Lucil’s ears perk up as he turns his penetrating gaze towards me. “How exactly did you manage to merge two different ornaments, Aruta? It’s… unprecedented.”

Suddenly, I feel the weight of every eye in the room upon me. The air grows thick with anticipation, and I can almost feel the pressure physically pushing down on my shoulders.

“Well…” I begin hesitantly, staring at my palm as if the answer might be written there. Memories of that moment flash through my mind, but they’re blurred, chaotic. “To be honest, I wasn’t really thinking at all back then. It was like… my mind just went blank.”

I take a deep breath, trying to articulate the tumultuous emotions that had overwhelmed me. “When Spica was killed, something inside me… shattered. Anger, grief, guilt – they all crashed over me like a tidal wave. In the end, my consciousness just… faded away. It was as if my body was moving on pure instinct, driven by a single, burning goal.” My voice grows quieter as I finish, absently rubbing the back of my neck.

As I conclude my explanation, I notice Saria and Lucil exchanging meaningful glances. There’s an intensity in their silent communication that sends a shiver down my spine.

“Aruta,” Saria says suddenly, rising to her feet. Her voice carries a weight of authority that wasn’t there before.

“Y-yes?” I flinch, startled by the abrupt shift in her demeanor.

Saria’s eyes narrow, her gaze piercing. “I need you to look directly into my eyes.” It’s not a request, but a command.

Swallowing hard, I nod and meet her gaze. Her violet eyes seem to glow with an otherworldly light, and I feel as if she’s peering straight into my soul. The moment stretches, tense and electric, before Saria finally closes her eyes and sinks back into her seat. She shares another loaded look with Lucil before turning back to address the room.

“Your magic circuit,” she begins, her voice grave, “has begun to take over your body.”

“What?” I tilt my head, a chill running through me at her words. “What do you mean?”

Lucil steps in, his tail swishing thoughtfully. “In response to your overwhelming emotional state, your magic circuitry initiated a sort of… override of your nervous system. This allowed it to unlock latent abilities – in this case, your new power.”

Noarin’s eyes widen, her hand instinctively moving to her chest where her own newly implanted circuit resides. “So… is this another aspect of being an Absolute Resonator?” Her voice wavers slightly, a mix of awe and apprehension.

Saria nods solemnly. “It appears so. But,” she cautions, her eyes narrowing, “we don’t yet know its limits or fully understand its mechanisms. This power… it could be as dangerous as it is potent.”

“Well,” Lucil interjects, his tail giving an optimistic waggle, “we can always seek answers through careful experimentation. After all, understanding is the first step towards control.”

The room falls into a contemplative silence as we all grapple with the implications of this revelation. I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and fear coursing through me. This new ability could be the key to protecting those I care about, but at what cost? The thought of my own body being taken over, even by my own power, is unsettling to say the least.

The sun hangs low in the sky, painting the city in hues of orange and gold as we make our way home. The meeting at ADF headquarters had stretched on for hours, each new revelation spawning countless questions and debates. Now, as the three of us – Noarin, Saria, and myself – walk side by side, a comfortable silence settles over us, each lost in our own thoughts.

I can’t help but steal glances at Saria, still marveling at her human form. Her long purple twintails sway gently in the evening breeze, and there’s a grace to her movements that seems both familiar and alien. It’s strange to think that this is the same being who, just yesterday, I could scoop up and carry in one arm.

Noarin’s hand finds mine, her fingers intertwining with my own. The warmth of her touch grounds me, a reminder of everything we’ve been through and everything we still have to face.

“So,” Noarin breaks the silence, her voice soft but curious, “what happens now? With Belzad gone and the immediate crisis averted, where do we go from here?”

I feel a weight settle in my chest at her words. It’s a question I’ve been asking myself since the dust settled, but I haven’t been able to find an answer.

Saria hums thoughtfully, her violet eyes scanning the horizon. “Now, we prepare,” she says, her voice carrying a hint of steel beneath its melodic tone. “Belzad may be gone, but the ripples of his actions will be felt for a long time to come. There are still rogue Holders out there, not to mention the possibility of more incursions from my world.”

“You really think there could be more threats from your world?” I ask, a hint of worry creeping into my voice.

Saria turns to me, her expression serious. “Aruta, the barrier between our worlds has been weakened. What Belzad did… it’s like he punched holes in the fabric of reality itself. Those holes won’t close overnight.”

I feel Noarin’s grip on my hand tighten slightly. “But we sealed the rifts, didn’t we? When we brought the city back down?”

“We closed the immediate breaches,” Saria nods, “but think of it like a dam with hairline cracks. We’ve patched the big holes, but the structure itself is still compromised. It will take time for the natural balance to reassert itself.”

We turn a corner, the familiar sight of our neighborhood coming into view. The normalcy of it all – children playing in yards, people walking their dogs – seems almost surreal after everything we’ve been through.

“So what does that mean for us?” I ask, my mind racing with possibilities. “Do we just… wait for the next crisis to hit?”

Saria shakes her head, a small smile playing on her lips. “Not at all. We train, we prepare, we grow stronger. You, especially, Aruta.” Her gaze meets mine, intense and unyielding. “Your new ability, the merging of ornaments – it’s a game-changer. We need to understand it, to help you master it.”

I nod, feeling a mix of excitement and trepidation at the prospect. “And what about you, Saria? What’s your role in all of this now that you’re… well, stuck here?”

A flash of emotion – too quick for me to identify – crosses Saria’s face before she schools her features into a neutral expression. “I’ll do what I’ve always done – guide, teach, and fight when necessary. But now, I can take a more… active role.”

We reach the front door of our home, pausing before entering. The setting sun casts long shadows, and for a moment, it feels like we’re standing on the precipice of something monumental.

Noarin speaks up, her voice soft but determined. “We’re going to need to be more vigilant than ever. Train harder, work better as a team. And…” she hesitates, her gaze dropping to where my hand holds hers, “we need to cherish every moment we have together. We can’t take anything for granted anymore.”

Her words hit me like a physical force, memories of Spica’s loss surging to the forefront of my mind. I pull Noarin closer, wrapping an arm around her waist. "You're right," I murmur. "We protect each other, no matter what.”

Saria watches us with a mixture of fondness and something that might be longing. “You two have grown so much,” she says softly.

Stepping into our home, I’m struck by how ordinary it all looks. The same furniture, the same pictures on the walls. But we’re not the same people who left this morning. We’ve changed, grown, faced unimaginable trials and emerged stronger.

As Noarin moves to the kitchen to start dinner and Saria settles onto the couch, I stand in the entryway for a moment longer. The future is uncertain, filled with potential dangers and challenges. But looking at the two of them - my partner and our mentor – I know that whatever comes, we’ll face it together.

With a deep breath, I close the door behind me, stepping fully into this new chapter of our lives. The world may be changing around us, but in this moment, in this place, we are home. And that, I realize, is the most powerful magic of all.
