Checkers

POV:

???

I thought Isekai was only a thing if you were eaten by Truck-kun or Airoplane-sempai. So, I couldn't help but wonder what I was doing sitting in front of a checkerboard with the bony figure of the grim reaper sitting opposite me.

"So. I take it you're going to take me off to some kind of judgement?" I asked.

"Perhaps." the reaper said, motioning to the checkers board. "Would you like to make an offer?"

"If I win I get to go back to living, I'd just concede, we're both aware of how I scheduled this appointment," I said looking over the checkerboard, a little tired.

"Not quite. If you win you can move on to your judgement. If I win you owe me a favor." I raised an eyebrow. The reaper seemed to smile somehow despite lacking lips to do so.

"Owing Death a favor..." I looked at the checkerboard. "Or move on to the consequences on the other side..." I sat down at the game table. "So, level with me, how bad is it for folks like me?"

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

"I'm afraid I can't tell you that." Death gestured to the board. "We can skip the game and go straight there if you wish."

"I see..." I move the first piece. The game lasted about as long as I could drag it out. I could win and head off to at best a stern talking to. At worse... I focused more on the game table. Or, I could owe Mr. Death a favor. That was most interesting. I'd never heard of him being allowed to do this. After twenty moves The Reaper had won.

"Okay what do you want Number 4?"

"I need a volunteer." Death answered. "I can't take from the goats, and the sheep won't follow me. Leaving me in a slight  predicament, until you showed up." He motions to me with a bony hand.

"Okay..."

"Now all I need is for you to go through this door, and if you do. You will need to last as long as possible. If you die there it's to your eternal resting place." A door appeared next to The Grim Reaper. "Or, we can go there right now." Another door appeared to his right. "Right or left."

"I'm not sure I've got a choice besides I do owe you a favor and I guess it can't be to much more on me than what I just left." I moved to the door.  "What do you mean 'last as long as I can'?"

"You'll see when you go through the door." After a moments' hesitation I pushed open the door and headed into a blinding light.
