"Uh, Captain? Where did everyone go?" Jax asked, looking over at Kevler who was intently scoping out the vast grasslands in front of him with a pair of binoculars.
"They left and by the looks of it, they must have left in quite a hurry along with all of the supplies inside of the ship while we were busy landing that machine." He sighed helplessly, it was him, Jax, Ruby, and Scarlett left alone to fend for themselves. The four pilots navigated Colonist 011 across the monotonous voyage through the galaxy. Though the ship sailed itself automatically to the location, the four had to manually maneuver the ship through asteroid belts and other hindrances.
"Where did they even go?" Scarlett called out, hauling a baggage cart over the rough terrain.
"East is my guess. That's where the water is." Jax replied.
"Uh, weren't their reports of anomalies east as well? Like, an alien civilization or something?"
"Let's not make assumptions. This is what we'll do. Scarlett, go join Ruby and investigate the supply room so we can see if they had the decency to leave anything for us. Jax and I will grab some equipment for hiking and see if we can spot anything or anyone. Sound good?" Kevler asked, the three of them agreeing in unison.
"Yes, sir." They called out. Kevler figured it would have been better to keep treating them as his co-pilots and instruct them as he did during the voyage. He strolled down to the cockpit with Jax and grabbed some gear from their wardrobes. Fortunately, the temperature on the planet was a cool fifteen degrees celsius, so, they didn't have to worry about hypothermia or hyperpyrexia. They fitted themselves with jackets, boots, a bag filled with essential needs as well as camping equipment in case return wouldn't be an option.
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
Once they were fully fitted, Kevler used the announcement microphone to alert the other two that they are now departing, and with a satisfactory nod, they departed. Meanwhile, Scarlett and Ruby explored what was now a barren storage container. Once the large automatic doors slid open, the two stared in disbelief as towering shelves of produce were missing in the masses.
"Impossible, it's only been a week," Ruby muttered.
"The so-called geniuses didn't possess human decency when they cleared these shelves. Let's split up there is something here."
The two found themselves scanning the shelves for any crumbs and it wasn't until they went past the public storage until they found some produce leftover inside the emergency caches. Essentially, the public storage was there to provide a group of five hundred people for an entire year, and entry was limited for obvious reasons until the ship had engaged its landing gear. The emergency cache was constructed if the public storage had suffered some damage or reserves ran low. However, the range and variety of products there had been reduced to nutrient bars and water tanks. The bare minimum for a human to be able to survive that length of time.
"At least they had the common sense to leave the emergency goods behind." Ruby sighed.
"That only means that they'll be back for more once their reserves start getting low. Hopefully, they'll make good use of those seeds and make some great farmlands considering how much seed they robbed."
"We can only hope, I don't even know if I want them to come back at this point."
"That's not our call to make, Captain Kevlar will have to take the reigns on that." Scarlett smiled.
"Hey, who's there?!"
[Journal Entry 001]
It's been an exciting first day working on the TerraCore Project. The first step of this whole operation was to name this beautiful new world of ours but considering that all of our inhabitants have taken the liberty to go sightseeing, that might have to wait a while. While two co-pilots salvage what they can from the storage room, Jax and I will go around and make sure that our children make it home before dark. In the event I don't make it home tomorrow, I'll bring my journal with me just in case.
