When Science Meets Wizardry

When Science Meets Wizardry

“Ignatio!” you roared but all that came out of your want end was sparks. Years of hard work had led you to this point of magical proficiency but it seemed hopeless when compared to what loomed in front of you. The magical beast roared its figure blotting out the sun. You fall to your knees beside your griffin, you don’t even have the strength to stand anymore. Forgive me, master. You think, a single tear rolling down your left cheek.

Remember my students, Wizardry is all about knowing that half of it is rooted in science and the other half that pretends to be science.

Why did master’s words from a long ago come to you now? Was it there to comfort you in your final moments, his cheerful wisdom-filled face and purple outfit with his tall, wrinkled wizarding hat meant to ease me into the next life? A thought strikes you. Maybe his words from that lecture had a point. You smile faintly, it seemed Master is still with you.

You get back up to your feet. That’s right, magic isn’t rooted in reality. You pluck a handful of feathers of your griffin’s feathers. You run towards the beast clutching the feathers. Magic does have to make sense, not completely.

“Imbulus.” You shout. It’s the simplest spell, the ability to imbue magic into objects, even novices are able to do this without training since it requires only micrograms of magic. The feathers glow purple. Your steps increase, each step becoming leaps surpassing human ability. Instead of a chain gravity now feels like a suggestion. Logically it makes no sense. You would the feathers of the swiftest creature known to man make you swifter just by having its feathers but the reason why it still worked was because it didn’t need to. The beast that stretched into the sky throws a building-sized fist at you. You barely dodge the fist by leaping toward its body but not because you can’t move any faster but because you simply didn’t need to move anymore.

Gems on the arm of the beast twinkle as they pass by connected to the fist hurtling toward the ground. Your glowing figure is reflected to you through them. You reach forward a hand towards your reflection. Scientifically it doesn’t make any sense, it’s nothing more than photons, but with magic ….

Your hand reaches through the solid layer until you are clasping your reflection by the hand. You pull out your reflection.

Both of you jump past it’s head. It’s now directly under you. The back of its head facing you. You both raise your wands. No words have to be spoken. What is magic? What is mana? Mana comes from all living beings. If mana is all around us then why can’t I access it? Maybe all it takes is a little faith. You think.

A sparkling beam shoots out of both of your wands. It digs 2 divots that stretch along its shoulders and a chunk of its head.

With a twirl of your wands, you summon a giant mirror. You both reach into the mirror pulling out more and more of you.

Who knows how far the potential of magic goes, is it limitless? The amount of you blot out the sky.

You all raised your wands. The building mana charges at your wand tips twinkle like the night sky.

“Ignatio!!!” You all shout in unison. The very heavens seem to roar the word. The beast gives one final roar before being overwhelmed by the blast. In ‘ts place is a smoking crater.

You descend softly into the crater. Your reflections have all disappeared. You walk to the center where a smoking heap remains. Reaching into it you take out a scuffed wizard hat.

You place the wizarding hat on top of the pile.

“Thank you, master.” You say through a mournful mouth.
