Chapter 1 - Time Before Birth [Revised]

Chapter 1 - Time Before Birth [Revised]

I feel a terribly painful feeling as if my very existence was being ripped apart. Due to the immense pain, I end up passing out.

The next time I woke up I was surrounded by a comfortable feeling. I was lying motionless inside a warm liquid that passed all over me. The soft pulsating vibration passing through my body was the only thing keeping me calm and aware I was alive.

Wondering where I was I try to open my eyes. 'Ugh, so dark, I can't see anything. Where is this place?' I wonder as I struggle to keep my eyes open.

I start to think back to what happened before I ended up here.

'So let's see I was... I was...I was? huh? I? Who am I?' I ask myself before starting to search through my memories only to find nothing.

'Wait, why can't I remember anything? If I have no memories of who I am how can I think so well? Shouldn't I be mindless?' I start panicking in my mind.

As I panic I remember what it is I should be doing and go back to trying to remember what I did last. I begin to look through my memories again to try and find anything related to my situation.

I start to find information within my memory, but it is all academic knowledge.

'I guess that is how I am able to hold a rational thought,' I ponder to myself.

Deciding to look through the only memories I have I end up finding some information on why I am here.

'Soul...send...thank...bless...help...probe...ugh, anything related to a soul is all hazy and I can barely remember anything about it,' my mind started to hurt.

'Ugh, so the memories say something about sending a soul to thank. Could I interpret that as sending my soul somewhere to thank me? But why, what did I do? Maybe I interpreted it wrong, yeah that must be it,' I conclude.

I rest my mind for a little bit before trying to find more clues.

After an unknown amount of time passing, I start to look for more clues of who I am and what's going on.

My memories were all strange. Some were bright as day and I could remember them easily, but then others were hazy and distant like they would soon disappear from my mind. I had a feeling of urgency to try to recover some of the hazy memories within me, so I reached into the back of my mind to try and even faintly remember the content of the memories.

But before I can recall any of those memories they disappear and I can no longer recognize they were with me at all. My mind becomes even more confused as I know something used to be there, but there is nothing left.

'Why must it be so hard to figure out who I am,' I mentally sigh as I am filled with emotions of sadness.

Fortunately or unfortunately I could not cry due to being submerged within this strange liquid.

I feel powerless and just let my thoughts wonder while I come to terms with my existence.

I think about where I came from, what I am, where was I, who was I, why this all happened. I had no answers and my fragmented memories could not provide the answers.

'I have information on all this information that portrays to academic purposes, but why can I not remember anything else? Why am I cursed with this useless information that won't help me with my problems? Why? Why?! Why?!!' I screamed at myself for being useless.

I was upset with myself for not being able to remember anything. I hated this. I had no clue on anything. I just wished I could find anything that would help me calm down and understand better.

'Why am I stuck here? Why can't I remember? What's wrong with me? My mental state is definitely going down. Ugh, why can't I just get a [status] update or som... huh?' confused I look at the blue screen that just appeared in front of me.

My mind went blank for a few moments before a wave of happiness flowed over me. I had found a clue something that could help me find out who I was. After recovering I concentrate on the bright blue screen in front of me.

'I...I don't have a name?' I thought while looking at the screen.

I was now slightly saddened at the fact I had no name, but when I started to look over the rest of this status thing I came to an understanding.

'Ah I see, so I am not born yet. That means I am inside my mother's womb. But what is a Faerian? All the knowledge I have even if it is very fragmented only states there being one intelligent race and that is the human. Am I not being born an intelligent species?' my mind starts to wander as my thoughts get more and more upset and angry until I decide to just accept it and not worry about my situation until after I am born.

When I finally calm down I realized just how mentally exhausted I was, so I decided to drift away into peaceful sleep.

The rising sun shines its light onto the city of Flore. The lakeside reflects the rising sun over the city creating a beautiful shadow on top of the water.

Near the edge of the city residing next to the large lake is a rather large estate. The estate is designed with nature all around it and architecture that resembles the natural beauty of the forest.

This estate belongs to the Westbrook family one of the esteemed high nobility from the Kingdom of Konavile.

Konavile is a prosperous kingdom that resides to the eastern side of the Belan continent. The Kingdom is well known for the diversity among its people. Although the royalty is of the human race, all races are treated equally and given the same rights.

As such it was put into place that each race has six representing houses of nobility for their race. The highest of such six houses claim the rank of high nobility.

The leaders of these houses, as well as the King and chosen representatives from the Council of Commons and the Silver Council, create the Mythril Council. A group of people who decide of the laws of the Kingdom.

The Westbrook family holds a seat on the Mythril Council as the representative of the Faerian nobility and the Faerian race.

***

Inside the Westbrook estate.

The current head of the Westbrook House, Vail Romula Westbrook, is seated within his personal office.

*knock**knock**knock*

"Honey may I come in," a voice says from outside the door.

"Elisandra you can come in," Vail says as he puts down his pen and looks up a the door.

Standing in the doorframe is a young looking woman in a dark blue sundress with long dark green hair. Her ears pointed upwards and her eyes matching her dress. As she walks in a pair of translucent wings flutter slightly.

"How many times do I have to tell you, you don't have to knock you can just come in," Vail says looking at her.

"I know this Vail, but," she says before being interrupted.

"No buts. Eli, You know I don't like formalities when not it's necessary. You are my wife. We share equal status."

"Yah but every time I enter unannounced you tell me to knock," Elisandra mumbles to herself.

Vail looked at her for a few seconds before shaking his head.

"Anyway, what is it you need from me, Eli. I told you I would be rather busy today so I do not have much time little things."

"Oh right, well it's concerning the pregnancy. About half an hour ago I felt mana condense within me, which indicates the soul has been formed within the baby."

Looking at the bulge at Eli's stomach Vail nods.

"So I suppose that means it's time to start thinking up names for the baby girl?"

"Yep~!" she says with a smile. "I have already come up with a few names that I like and wanted you to start thinking about names."

"Alright, I will think of a few names by tonight and try to come to a conclusion."

"That should work. If we can come up with a name by tonight that would be great."

"Alright good, then I need to get back to work now."

"Ok, see you later today Vail, love you," she says as she walks to the door.

"Love you too, Eli."

The door closes and Vail looks over to the computer displaying he got another email.

"Ugh, more plans for the space project from Thadeus. This is such a pain to work on. Why do the dwarven and human cultures strive for so much innovation? Sure it's convenient and helpful, but still," grumbles Vail.

He looks over the blueprints that the Dwarven scientist sent to all the Mythril Council members and sighs.

"Culture sure is changing," he says as he picks up his pen and starts filling out the half-finished paperwork.

I wake up slowly from my slumber.

'Ahh, that was probably the best sleep I have ever had. Actually, it's the only sleep I have ever had, isn't it? Ha ha,' I joke to myself.

I slowly open my developing eye's and look at the darkness around me. Now that I think about it, it is strangely scary being stuck somewhere you can not see in. The only thing that was keeping me calm was the heartbeat of my mother which was a constant wave of vibrations through my body. It was a reassurance that someone cared about me and was constantly there for me.

'Now that I think about it how long exactly is the gestation period for this Faerian race? How long have I been in here and how long do I got left?'

I think for a bit about the situation and then shake my head.

'It does not matter much does it. I will get out when I get out, so I guess I should just relax and wait it out.'

The thoughts that were swarming in my head calm down as I focus on the heartbeat all around me. My body is constantly tired in this state, so I drift back to sleep.

***

At first, I tried to keep track of time, but due to my frequent sleep schedule and no sense of time of day, I quickly lost track of how long I was here. Due to this fact, I started to get a little restless. My body could respond slightly to my commands, so I would flail around a little when I got a little upset.

I did like this place but was starting to feel concern for how long I would have to be in here for and the mental effects it could have on me.

Everything changed for the better after I started to hear voices from outside. The voice I heard most often was the soothing voice of my mother. She constantly talked to me in a language that I could not recognize, but she did keep saying one word over and over and that word was "Aila".

I figured that this word could be my name, so I checked my status.

'Aila...Aila Westbrook ey? That sounds pretty. I like it, it's a good name.'

As I was admiring my new found name something shocking went through my mind.

'Wait, I can hear people speaking and I have a name now. Then that must mean... Yes! I am being born to an intelligent species,' I thought as a huge burden was lifted off me.

'But still, what exactly is a Faerian? Does the Fae represent fairy? Am I being born a fairy? Is my sense of size also off? Ugh nevermind, I should not think about it until I am actually born.'

Floating where I am I just relax and go back to listening to my mother and the others around her.

'How long am I going to be inside here?' I ask myself hoping for some kind of answer, but nothing arrived.

***

The more time passed the more bored I got, which led me to start moving around the little area I was in. I was really curious what the inside of a womb felt like so I started to move my hands on the walls and tried to feel how large this place was compared to me. It was not much larger than I was.

Eventually, curiosity had overthrown my thoughts and I started to play around a little. I would throw little kicks and punches every now and then. It was fun and it was the first time in my short life that I was enjoying myself.

Unfortunately, I had to tone down my excitement because I heard a slight groan from my mother.

I did not stop entirely and continued to play around, but I kept it to moderation in order to not hurt my mother.

***

Elisandra was in the living room sitting on a reclining chair while next to a fireplace. She was currently watching television while slowly knitting a little blanket.

She felt a slight kick coming from her stomach.

"Oh, that's quite the kick you got there, Aila," she said to the baby in her stomach.

Elisandra quickly got back to working on the small blanket she was knitting.

"Don't worry Aila, mommy's going to knit you the best blanket," she said enthusiastically.

As Elisandra was knitting a young boy of around eleven walked into the room. He had slightly long dark blue hair with dark blue eyes and was wearing a light green training outfit. On his back were a pair of small growing wings.

"Hey mom, how you feeling?" he spoke out.

Elisandra turned around and looked at the boy.

"I'm doing fine Allan. Do you need anything or are you here to take a break?"

Allan looked at Elisandra and answered.

"My wings started to hurt, so I wanted to take a break."

Elisandra looked at him questioningly.Allan noticing this gaze looked slightly to the left.

Allan noticing this gaze looked slightly to the left.

"Oh, well I do suppose growing wings do tend to hurt occasionally, but it should not be enough to interfere with your practice. So, Allan Zephyrus Westbrook, what was it you were actually doing?" she asked.

Allan tensed up when Elisandra said this. Drops of sweat started to appear on his face as he looked slightly away.

"Um...Well...You see I wanted to show off my newly growing wings to Keith and Kristy so I," he was cut off.

"Allan, you should have learned about this in class. Not to mention the many times I warned you not to strain your growing wings. If you end up crippling your wings through a deformed growth how do you think I would feel, or this family. A faerians wings are their greatest pride, and do you know how bad it would look if the first son of the Westbrook family had crippled wings?"

"I know mom, but,"

Elisandra cut him off slightly upset.

"But what? No buts mister. You know the consequences of your actions and will be hereby punished for the rest of your break at home. Your training and studying time has been doubled and you will not have access to your phone for the remaining two weeks of your break,"

Allan looked down clearly upset.

"B...But Mom!"

Elisandra shot her eyes at Allan and he flinched slightly.

"It does not matter, decisions final. Now come over here and let me help heal your wings,"

Allan sighed and walked over to Elisandra with his head hung low. When he got in front of her chair he sat down.

Elisandra put her hands onto Allan's wings and channels mana into them. The wings start to glow a faint blue. Elisandra then massaged the wings gently to make sure to remove the fatigue. Afterward, she slowly withdrew her hands and the wings returned to their natural color.

"Listen, Allan. I am not mad I am just upset. I want you to learn the consequences of your actions and a strict punishment is the best way to make you learn. Now, I will permit you to have the rest of today off in order to make sure your wings heal properly, but starting tomorrow your punishment will begin," she said.

"Yes, I got it, mother. I won't do it again,"

"Good, now you go now,"

Allan starts to walk out of the room.

"Oh actually, can you go get Keith and Kristy for me I want to talk to them,"

"Yes, mother," Allan said as he walks into the hallway towards the training grounds.

Elisandra went back to knitting and watching television for a few minutes before she heard running coming from the halls.

"You asked for us mother?"

Elisandra turned around to see a young boy of around seven wearing the same outfit as Allan. He had short light blue hair with violet eyes.

"Wheres Kristy,"

As Elisandra said this she heard a worn out voice coming from the hall.

"Hey, Keith, wait for me,"

Entering the room was an exhausted little girl around the age of three wearing a light green dress. She had mid-back length dark teal hair and light blue eyes.

 "Right here," Keith said.

Elisandra muttered something under her breath for a split second before speaking.

"I want to hear your perspectives on what had happened earlier,"

"About Allan?" asked Keith.

"Yes, Keith can you explain first,"

"Yes, mother," he paused for a second before resuming. "Basically, while Allan and I were training, instructor Benswik informed us to keep practicing for a couple minutes on our own while he went to go check on a noise from the other side of the wall. We listened to him not wanting to disobey and continued practicing. Anyway, Kristy who was sitting on the side watching us mentioned Allans how cool Allan's wings looked, and thus Allan decided it would be a great idea to get on one of the taller rocks and try to glide down. I warned him not to, but he did not listen and thus when he jumped off he tried to control himself but ended up falling onto his back. When Benswik got back and saw Allan he told him to go to you,"

When Keith finished Elisandra shook her head a little before turning to Kristy.

"Is everything the same,"

"Eh? ah, yes. That is what happened,"

"Then can you explain why you made that remark,"

"Oh, well I saw how cool it looked when Allan was moving around and the light glittered off his little wings. It was really different from how it looks when I see mommy and daddy,"

After hearing the story Elisandra turns back to both of her children.

"As you both probably heard from Allan, he was punished for the foolish act he has done. I want you two to reflect on the actions your older brother made and make sure to never repeat them."

They both looked at Elisandra seriously.

"'Yes mother""

"Now then, Keith, return back to the training grounds and tell Benswik that you will finish your training alone and Allan will not be back today. Kristy, you can go do whatever you want, just meet me later at around four for mana training."

""Yes mother""

As they say that Keith runs off down the hallway while Kristy stays put.

"Need anything else, sweetie?" Elisandra says in a lighter tone.

"Ah, well, I was just wondering how little Aila was doing."

"Oh? She's fine. You want to feel and make sure."

"Really can I?"

Kristy's face was glowing with excitement.

"Of course sweetie, just be sure to be gentle. You don't want to harm her."

"Ok mommy."

Kristy walks over to Elisandra.

"Now just place your hand right here on mommy's belly and you can feel her moving around," Elisandra says showing Kristy where to place her hand.

Kristy moves her hand over to where Elisandra is holding her stomach.

'I wonder who mom is talking to. She usually does not talk this long to most people.'

Over the time I have been here, I have been occasionally listening to mom speaking to others around her. She seems to speak to a lot of different people from what I have noticed, but it's hard to tell. However, today has probably been the most talkative she has ever been from and she sounded a little angry also. I've heard the voice of the person she is talking to; it's the voice of a young boy most likely.

'Hmm~ wait, there is a young voice is this guy maybe my older brother? That would be cool, though it's not certain. Whatever let's believe it's true for now; I've always wanted an older sibling so it would be nice to believe it for n...Wait what do I mean always. Is this a reflex of my past life or is this my personal desire, or maybe it's both. Ah, forget it. It doesn't matter.'

Setting aside my identity crisis I turn my attention back towards the conversation my mom and my older brother? are having. The conversation flowed in a matter that seemed to point to that my older brother? did something wrong, but that was just my guess.

After a little bit, the outside noises disappear. Feeling bored again I decide to kick around a little more to tire myself out. Not long after though I hear more voices. These voices I also recognize, one was an even younger boy and a young girl. It's hard to tell who is older by the voices being muffled so I ignore it.

'Are these two also my older siblings? That would be cool if that's true. Also, I have a sister, I won't be the only girl in the house. Yay!'

Excited by my discovery I focus in on the young girl's voice to try and figure out her character. Unfortunately, she did not speak much during the conversation so I was a little disappointed, but she did talk near the end of the conversation though.

I decided to kick a little to show my upsetness at the situation but was surprised by the outcome.

"Wow, I felt a kick mommy, I felt little Aila kick," a very excited sister said basically right next to me.

I was taken aback at the volume of the sound.

'If she was close to me was she maybe feeling mom's stomach and felt my kick just now. Is she excited over that? That's adorable. I am happy if this is how my sister naturally acts.'

After that, my mom and sister talk for a little bit, probably about me, and then my sister leaves.

I am a little disappointed I could not enjoy her company more, but she must have things she must do. I decided to play around more to keep myself distracted and let my thoughts wander.

'It's been a pretty long time I have been in here I think, so when am I going to get out exactly? I mean sure I can entertain myself with kicking and flailing around, but that will eventually get boring. Sure it's nice in here but well what exactly should I do? How long am I supposed to wait here? I seemed to have a body when I came to, so if a faerian has a similar gestation period as a human then I will be waiting about three months, but I don't know how long I will be in here when I am not of the human species. Maybe shorter, maybe longer. If it is longer than I hope it's not much longer than three months. How much time has passed so far? A month? Maybe, it's hard to keep track of time in here.'

My thoughts continue on like this until I fall asleep.

***

I've noticed recently that the oldest of my siblings? has seemed to talk to mom less. I wonder if he really did get in trouble back then. The other two show up more frequently with my sister being the most frequent. I'm happy though I quite like my sister and the fact that she comes to speak to me is a really great feeling. It makes me want to look forward to my birth more than I already am. I really want to know what my sister looks like.

***

Elisandra stood outside of the house waiting for an old friend to arrive. The winter air swiftly flowing throughout her hair and left her slightly shivering.

She was standing around a melted circle of snow that was created from heating the atmosphere around her. The winter air was still flowing around her body so she was wearing a heavy jacket to keep warm. There was a thin layer of fabric around her wings to keep them warm.

Elisandra watched as a silver car approached the driveway. When the car reached the house it parked and an elven lady got out.

"Eli! It's been so long."

She ran up and tightly hugged Elisandra.

Hugging her back Elisandra spoke. "Far too long, Kaylin, far too long."

Releasing her from the hug, Elisandra looked at Kaylin.

Kaylin had shoulder length dirty blonde hair and green eyes. She was wearing a brown fur coat that extended down to her knees.

"Where have you been?" Elisandra said before tearing up. "You suddenly disappeared after my wedding and never once contacted me."

Tears were falling from Elisandra's face. Kaylin walked over to her and wiped her tears.

"I'm sorry for leaving so suddenly, Eli. I swear I did not want to leave after my best friend had just gotten married, but I had to go silent for a while to investigate some stuff. It, unfortunately, took way longer than it should have and only just recently got dismissed."

"Fifty-three years is a little more than a while, Kaylin"

Kaylin let out an embarrassed laugh and looked shyly away for Elisandra.

Seeing the familiar shy looks from Kaylin, Elisandra started laughing. She was upset, but could not deny the fact that her best friend was still the same person as always.

Kaylin saw Elisandra laughing and started to laugh also. Both of them just stood there for a few minutes laughing. Once they settled down Kaylin started to speak again.

"Are you doing alright, Eli? Nothing bad has happened to you since I have disappeared right?"

"Don't worry, Lin. My life has been great these past fifty years. Vail has been treating me very well and we have had three adorable children with a fourth on its way."

Elisandra places her hands onto her stomach to show Kaylin.

Looking at her stomach Kaylin gasped. "Ah! Congratulations, Eli. Is it a boy or a girl? When is it due?"

"She a girl, and she is due in a few weeks actually. How about we go inside. I have already prepared a guest room for your arrival."

"Good idea, it's chilly out here even inside this heat bubble."

They both walk towards the house and enter through the front door. When they went through the door the figure of a little girl was standing there waiting.

"Oh, Kristy. Do you need something?" Elisandra asked.

"I was looking for mommy so I could talk about little Aila." Kristy looked over at the woman beside Elisandra. "Who's this, mommy?"

"Oh, this is..."

"Hi there Kristy! I'm Kaylin Farthoak. I'm an old friend of your mother. You can call me Aunt Lin," Kaylin said playfully. "Oh, and your mom and I are going to catch up on the years we have been apart, so you can't speak with her right now. Can you wait for a little sweetie?"

"Ohh, I was just wanting to ask mommy if I could help take care of little Aila when she is finally born."

Elisandra noticed the slight sadness in Kristy's eyes.

"Of course you can sweetie," Elisandra said kindly. "Make sure to play with her a lot and keep an eye on her when I am not around for me. Can you do that?"

A sparkle shined in Kristy's eyes.

"Yes, of course, mommy. Thank you very much." Kristy turned her head towards Kaylin. "Sorry for taking up your time, Aunt Lin. I'll excuse myself now."

As Kristy ran off, Kaylin started to laugh.

"I am now officially her aunt, that was easy. You have an adorable daughter Eli. I am definitely going to stay here for a while if all your kids are like this."

Elisandra let out a small laugh.

"Kristy is like that. My other two, Allan and Keith, are pretty good also. Allan is a bit of a show-off and somewhat arrogant at times, and Keith is a little timid around others but is nice once you get to him so don't worry. Though with Keith turning seven recently, he will be joining Allan at the Academy this year after winter break is over, so you may not see those two very often beside from breaks from school."

"That's fine, I will be staying here for a while anyway, so it's not a big deal."

"Ok, then let me give you a small tour of our estate and then we will go talk in your room."

"Ok!"

***

Vail stood outside next to Elisandra, Kristy, and Kaylin. In front of him were his two sons Allan and Keith. They were standing in front of a car that was going to take them to the Academy.

Vail took a step forwards and started to speak to the two boys.

"Allan, today marks your fifth year attending the Academy. This year you will obtain a class based on your own combat style. Make sure to keep your grades and combat training up also." Vail turned to Keith. "Keith, this will be your first year at the academy. Most of the year will be a review of what you already know. Stay serious about your classes so you don't develop any bad habits. Also, try to keep an eye on Allan. I don't want any more wing incidents happening. Are we clear you two?"

""Yes, father!""

"Good, then Allan, Keith, I wish you both the best of luck. Go and enjoy your school life."

""Yes, father!""

They both responded and got into the car after saying their goodbyes.

Vail turned his head towards the human maid in the driver's seat of the car.

"Veronica."

"Yes, master."

"Make sure you get them there safely."

"Yes, master."

"Alright, safe travels."

As Vail spoke the car started and started to travel off into the distance.

***

Time continued to pass and my sister has been increasing the amount of time she spends with me.

I don't know why but she seems really excited always talking to mother and myself. It's quite fun listening to her go on and on very excitedly about whatever she is talking about.

There was also a new person that was spending time with mom. She sounded much older than my siblings, but I could not figure out who this person was. She would often chat with mom and they would laugh often. It was nice to hear mom laugh as she seemed to not laugh that much before this person appeared.

This new person quickly became another person I was looking forward to meeting.

***

'How long have I been in here for?' I ask myself out of boredom.

I had lost track of time quite long ago and could not determine how long I had actually been inside my mother for. I could only hope I was reaching the point where I would soon be born, but I could only hope for it.

Because of the boredom, I was getting more tired more often. I would lose consciousness quicker than before. Honestly, it was not such a bad thing, as I would not have to spend time awake having a mental crisis about my situation.

I started to feel tired again and decided I needed sleep, so I went to sleep.

***

My mind was starting to lose composer. It had been so long since I first woke up here and my lack of space was starting to get to me.

Although my sister and the mysterious woman talked to mom regularly, I still was exposed to silence for long periods of time. It was the worst and made me realize how much my sleep schedule was screwed up. As a baby, a sleep schedule probably did not matter, but I was still wanted to get on a more normal one so I would not be in silence.

I was really starting to wonder how much longer I could take being in here.

***

Time felt like it passed slowly. My mind was starting to blur with repetition about my short life so far. I wanted something new. I wanted to do something. I was tired of being here, but I could not move. I could not get out. I had to wait and wait I did.

More time passed and I finally felt a pushing force being applied to me. There were screams from my mother. I knew my time to be born had finally arrived. I felt the pushing force even more and felt my body slowly coming out.

I saw a bright light when my eyes were exposed to the air. I felt so happy that I started to cry.
