Chapter 5 - Aftermath

Chapter 5 - Aftermath

Moving quickly through the forest, I keep myself aware for any monsters. Thankfully there is enough daylight and monsters aren’t out and about, but given the little time left, I need to find a safe place, at least until we can return back to the dungeon doors. The best hiding place would be inside the dungeon, as dangerous as it is the outside world at night is even more dangerous.

After running for about five minutes, I stop and put Alisha down in a small gap surrounded by trees, with only one way in or out. A death trap, but also better to defend. Looking over her body, I see the large sword cut down her chest and stomach. Checking the wound, there is some dirt and fabric mixed in, the bleeding has stopped and thankfully it isn’t life threatening.

“System, claim quest reward.”

[You received 1,000xp!]

[Level 10 available.]

[You receive 1x Medical Kit.]

‘I don’t level to 10 automatically ?’ Confused about that message, I put it aside for now. In front of me a box appears, just an ordinary box appearing from the air, I open it to find 2 bottles with red liquid inside and 2 clumps of cloth. Knowing the bottles contain healing medicine and the clumps to be bandages, my System shows me their information.

[Minor Healing Potion.

Helps recovery with minor wounds.]

[Bandages.

Just normal, clean cloth for your wounds.]

Some items get this information, I’m not sure why but things like our swords or clothes don’t get this information. Grabbing a healing potion, I pour some down along the wound, and the rest I carefully tip into her mouth. Grabbing the bandages, I’m not sure how to apply it. By watching the humans do this, I carefully unwrap it and put one end at the start of the wound to cover the wound. I think this is how you put it on, I see the white material quickly becoming red. Sighing, I sit down, put Alisha on my lap, ready my sword and keep an eye on the sunlight. I’ll move back to the dungeon doors at sunset.

[Alisha’s PoV]

Groaning, I try and open my eyes, my eyelids are so heavy. I’m so exhausted, my body barely listens to me. Managing to open my eyes, the sunlight hits and burns, so tired of the sun. As my eyes slowly adjust, trees enter my vision, out of the corner of my eye I see a flash of silver. Slowly turning my head towards the silver. I can see its hair, which is attached to a girl…is that Sally? Where are we, why is Sally here? The last thing I remember is Thomas coming towards me…

No, that’s a lie. I know what happened, I ripped Thomas’s head off and drank his blood. But it’s fuzzy, I don’t recall everything that happened, I can still taste it down my throat, and something stuck in my teeth. As I move a hand slowly towards my mouth, another hand grabs me, and I see Sally shake her head.

“Later, we need to go.”

“I don’t think I can move, my body hurts”

Whispering that out, Sally makes a thoughtful expression for a moment, nods, then picks me up in her arms and throws me over her shoulder, with my head at her back. Moving out of the little gap we were in, Sally starts running forward. I don’t know where she is going, but I can see that we are in the forest. The bumping caused by her running makes me feel sleepy, knowing that sleeping now wasn’t a good idea, I open my System to check the prompts that have been nagging me.

[You killed Thomas.]

Tilting my head, I mutter in confusion “Rewards available? Demonic Fox Awakening?”.

“I’ll fill you in later, don’t fall asleep, we’re nearly at the dungeon.”

‘Dungeon? Does she plan to hide there?’ Unsure of what's happening, I check my status next.

Blinking, I double check my race and see it’s been updated to no longer say Monster. Although I’m highly curious, I set it aside since Sally said she’ll fill me in later. Seeing the sun setting in the sky, I clench my fist. Either we die tonight, or we somehow survive. Thinking back to the idea that Sally was taking us to the dungeon, I agreed that it was the best location for us right now. Being out here when the monsters woke up would lead to our deaths within minutes, but maybe we can find shelter in the dungeon. Hound Hell has no monsters near the entrance, but since it mutated to this new dungeon it’ll be a miracle if it was the same. Suddenly the smell of blood hits my nose. It still smells amazing, but I have no thoughts of drinking it, yet it still smelled good.

Hoping this is an after effect of my transformation, we arrive at the clearing with the dungeon doors. As we continue into the clearing, the bodies in front become visible to me. It seems over half of the hybrids that had come were dead, with the rest missing, I guess they had left since I do not see the cart anymore. It was a slaughter. I see Thomas’s body come into view, headless and missing an arm, both missing or perhaps just out of my view. For some reason seeing this scene makes my lower jaw really hurt. Actually, it does really hurt, the numbness over my entire body has started to dissipate.

Feeling the pain, I understand why I wasn’t able to move earlier, it feels like everything is on fire. Sniffling in response to the pain, I suddenly smelled something…I don’t know how to explain it, but it smelled alive. Following the smell and looking over to where it was coming from, I see two bodies, one on top of the other. Looking carefully, there was some slight movement coming from one of the bodies.

“Sally, over there” Trying to point in the direction, I manage to raise my hand a little bit before it falls back down.

“We don’t have time, we’ll find some food later.”

“NO! I’m not asking to get a body, I think someone is alive over there!”

Blushing out of embarrassment at Sally’s comment, I realize I sound a bit too angry. Feeling Sally stop, she looked over in the direction I tried to point and moved to where the two bodies were. Setting me down on my butt, Sally pushes the top body off and checks both. The bottom body’s chest slowly rises and falls. Looking at the face, I don’t recognize who it is, looking down I see a sword stabbed through their shoulder, with several sword wounds on his body, it’s incredible he was still breathing.

“Gray huh, so death didn’t take him.”

Hearing Sally mention a name, I prompt the System and check his information.

[Level 6 Monster, Gray]

Slowly getting to my feet, I stumble a little. “Sally, carry him. I can walk the rest.” Nodding, Sally yanks the sword out of Gray, picks him up and throws him over her shoulder and with me stumbling to the side, we slowly move towards the dungeon, perhaps here we’ll die, or we find an opportunity to gain the strength to fight back.

“Feel free to grab a body if you still need food, just carry it yourself.”

“I told you, I wasn’t asking to take a bod-No, that’s not the problem, I don’t eat corpses!”

Without knowing our fates, we enter the dungeon, and with a slam behind us the doors close.

[Cerberus notices your presence.]
