Prologue: Evidence

The device was about six inches by four and a half inches and it rested inside its evidence bag without any serious incident until it came into the hands of Officer Claremont. He turned it over in his hands, waiting for it to leap up and bite him or sprout teeth. That didn't happen so when he looked up at Detective Moore his face bore an expression of bored indifference.

"Seriously?" He said as he looked over the chain of evidence log that signified that this Amazon Kindle was now in his possession, "You're telling me that guy killed four people over a fucking eReader?"

Moore shrugged and finished his paperwork, "He claimed it was evil, that it was making him do things."

Claremont turned the machine over in his hands, shaking his head, "It's not even a god damned iPad."

Moore nodded, "I know."

"I mean if you're gonna waste some people, at least do it for a fucking iPad."

Moore snickered and pushed the papers across the desk and through the slot in the evidence room's cage. Claremont took the papers and stuffed them into the file that would accompany the tiny machine into its new home on the shelf of the LAPD's evidence storage facility.

When it was safely inside its final resting place, with a barcode sticker taped to its front and all of the paperwork neatly typed and filed, Moore and Claremont decided to discuss other things. The weather, sports games, or their wives were all topics that the two men casually touched upon during their freewheeling conversation.

But in in the deep dark of the evidence room, the eReader began to tell a story...
