The forest was quiet as Aurora walked along the wooded path, the morning sun filtering through the canopy overhead. She could hear the soft crunch of leaves under her boots, lost in thought about the journey ahead.
"Aurora! There you are," called a smooth voice from behind her. She turned to see Lysander striding up the path, his dark jacket billowing behind him dramatically. Though she was uneasy being alone with him, Aurora forced a smile.
"Good morning, Lysander. You're up early," she said.
He flashed a grin. "Of course, we have an important day ahead. Who knows what treasures we'll uncover."
Aurora frowned slightly, detecting the greed in his voice. She knew Lysander wanted her healing and empathy abilities to locate the three ancient artifacts that were said to bestow great power. Power that Lysander clearly craved.
Still, this was one of the only chances to get away and find Zeohyr. She wanted to trust he would be true to his word.
Lysander slung a companionable arm around Aurora's shoulders, though she tensed at his touch. "I know the journey is long, but with your skills, we'll have enough money to create our own what ever we desire at our feet soon enough."
Aurora shrugged off his arm gently. "Let's just take one step at a time. The artifacts may not even exist."
Lysander laughed, though the sound seemed hollow. "With you by my side, I have no doubt we'll find them."
Aurora felt unease curl in her stomach, but forced a smile. She had known Lysander for so long, perhaps she was imagining things. Still, she would be watchful on the road ahead. For now, she just said, "We should get moving if we want to make progress before nightfall."
Lysander's grey eyes glinted eagerly. "Yes, let's be on our way. Destiny awaits."
Aurora turned and continued down the forest path, Lysander following close behind. She hoped her trust in him was warranted, and that no darkness lurked beneath his charming facade. Only time would tell what lay ahead on this journey.
Aurora walked briskly down the winding forest path, keenly aware of Lysander close on her heels. His presence unsettled her in a way she couldn't quite explain.
She glanced back at him. "You seem eager today. Any particular reason?"
Lysander flashed a grin that didn't reach his eyes. "Just anticipating the fortune and glory that await us, of course." With a mocking low bow.
Aurora nodded slowly, a crease forming between her brows. Over the days she had learned his tells, the subtle shifts in tone and expression that revealed his true intent. Her intuition prickled now in warning.
"Aurora, you know you're more than just my companion on this quest," Lysander said, voice low and smooth. "You're my dearest friend. I'd trust you with my life. Also having the flower that ties you to Zephyr does not help."
Aurora met his gaze, searching those grey eyes for any hint of deception. She thought she saw a predatory glint flash through them before he angled his face away.
Unease bloomed in her chest. "Lysander...is there something you're not telling me about why we're doing this?"
He was silent for a long moment. Aurora held her breath.
Finally Lysander turned, eyes hard as stone. "The artifacts will make us the two most powerful beings in the country. But I need your magic to find them." His hand clamped down on her wrist. "Don't fight me on this, Aurora. It's going to happen one way or another."
Shock and hurt coursed through Aurora. Her friend, and now warden, was trying to use her. She had to get away, and fast.
Wrenching her wrist from his grasp, she spun and fled into the shadowed woods. Lysander's shouts echoed behind her as she ran, heart pounding, for her life.
Aurora's breath came in ragged gasps as she sprinted through the dark forest, adrenaline fueling her steps. She could hear Lysander crashing after her, his footfalls growing closer with each second.
"You can't escape me, Aurora!" he yelled. "Your power will be mine!"
Fear lanced through her. She had to get away, had to find a place to hide. Just ahead, she spotted a rocky outcropping dotted with crevices and caves. If she could make it there...

Aurora poured on more speed, her legs burning. She risked a glance back - Lysander was mere strides behind, his face contorted in determination.
With a final burst, Aurora dove into a thick bramble bush just as Lysander's grasping hands missed her by inches. She scrambled deeper into the narrow cavern, the darkness enveloping her.
"You have nowhere to go!" Lysander's voice echoed from outside. "Come out now and I'll go easy on you."
Aurora flattened herself against the ground, heart thundering. She slowed her breathing, willing herself to stay silent as Lysander prowled just outside.
This betrayal cut deep, but her desire to be free burned hotter. She would find a way to escape Lysander's clutches. Her journey was only beginning.
Aurora held her breath, listening to Lysander's footsteps crunch on the gravel outside the cave entrance.
"Aurora," came his sly voice. "Don't make this more difficult than it needs to be. With your power, we could accomplish great things together."
Aurora squeezed her eyes shut, willing herself not to make a sound. Lysander was cunning with his words, but she knew now his true nature.
A gentle breeze seemed to caress her cheek then, and she heard a familiar voice whisper, "Be brave, my dear. I will help you."
Aurora's eyes flew open. Could it be...? "Zephyr?" she breathed.
The voice chuckled softly. "I told you I would always watch over you. Now come, it's time we left this place."
Aurora felt Zephyr's presence surround her with warmth and comfort. He was here, guiding her as he'd done so many times before.
Drawing courage from Zephyr's strength, Aurora turned and crept deeper into the winding cave tunnels. She would find another way out, far from Lysander's grasp. Zephyr's light lit her way through the darkness.
"That's it," Zephyr encouraged. "You can do this."
Aurora moved swiftly, Zephyr's voice filling her with hope. She would escape this night, and never again would she trust so blindly. Her true journey was only just beginning.
Aurora moved swiftly through the winding tunnels made by other animals, Zephyr's soothing voice guiding her steps. She could hear Lysander in the distance, his footfalls echoing off the cave walls as he searched for her.
"Hurry now, the exit is just ahead," Zephyr urged. His wispy form floated beside her, casting a soft glow to light her way.
Aurora's heart pounded with exhilaration and fear. She was so close to freedom, yet Lysander's pursuit felt perilously near.
Rounding a corner, Aurora saw moonlight spilling into a clearing with a small pond. Fresh air caressed her face. She broke into a run, her feet flying over the rocky ground.
"Almost there!" Zephyr called. "You can make it!"
With a burst of speed, Aurora launched herself out of the cave and into the lush forest beyond. She tumbled to the ground, overcome with relief. Lysander's shouts of rage echoed from within the cave, but he did not emerge.
Panting, Aurora looked up at the starry sky peeking through the canopy of trees. "Thank you, Zephyr," she whispered. "I won't forget what you've done for me."
Zephyr's voice sighed softly on the breeze. "You were always stronger than you realized, my dear. Now go, and lets find each other as we are meant to."
Aurora rose to her feet, new resolve coursing through her. She would find her own path now. With Zephyr watching over her, she could face whatever darkness lay ahead.
Aurora took off into the forest, the moon lighting her way through the dense trees. She had no idea where she was going, only that she needed to get as far away from Lysander as possible.
After running for what felt like hours, exhaustion seeped into Aurora's bones. She slowed to a walk, her legs shaking and her breath coming in ragged gasps. Up ahead, she spotted a small clearing surrounded by towering pines. Deciding it was as good a place as any to rest, she made her way over and collapsed at the base of one of the large trees.
As her breathing steadied, the full weight of what had happened came crashing down on her. Lysander had betrayed her in the worst possible way. He had pretended to care for her, all while plotting to use her powers for his own selfish gain. Hot tears spilled down Aurora's cheeks. She pulled her knees to her chest and sobbed.
A gentle breeze rustled the pine needles above her. "Hush now, be strong," Zephyr's soothing voice whispered.
Aurora wiped her eyes, taking comfort in the spirit fox's presence. "What will I do now, Zephyr? Where will I go?"
"Forward," came the simple reply. "Trust in yourself. The path will unfold before you."
Aurora nodded, determination rising within her once more. She was a survivor. Lysander had not broken her, and she would never let anyone cage her spirit again.
As the first light of dawn peeked through the trees, Aurora rose and continued onward. The future was unknown, but she would face it with courage.
****************
Lysander made it to his cabin furious and in rage. Blood dripped from his forehead from trying to pursue Aurora. He stopped and gave out a deep chuckle. He went over to the kitchen where he was hiding the foxes flower. He stared at its beauty as in its petals he could see the past of Aurora and Zephyr in the fox forms. With a manic thought and action he started the water in the sink and turned on the garbage disposal. He stopped himself, "No, do not be so rash, the prize you are smarter than this." He decided just to pluck a few petals. As they were plucked they faded into nothing. "Slow, she will come back to you if you do it slow."
At that moment a knock on his front door. Already as he thought as he opened it and to his great surprise Zephyr was standing in front of him looking tired. Quickly thinking, "You must be Zephyr. Aurora always talked about you please come in." Zephyr perked up at the name of Aurora, "Is she here? Is she ok? I just got a pain of some of her missing."
Lysander, "No my friend she was just taken by some evil. I fought them as best I could being subtle about the blood still on his hands and forehead. Come in we will find her together."
