Chapter Twenty: When Nature Decides You’re the Enemy

The mouth of Wyrmbark Hollows stretched before us, a jagged maw framed by massive gnarled roots that pulsed faintly with sickly green energy. The air hung heavy with moisture, the faint smell of decay clinging to every breath.

My HUD flickered briefly as the system loaded the dungeon’s entry parameters.

[Entering Dungeon: Wyrmbark Hollows]

[Recommended Level: 25+]

[Current Party Level Average: 20]

[Primary Objective: Investigate and Eliminate the Source of the Corruption]

“Level twenty-five, huh?” Mason whistled under his breath. “We’re punching a bit above our weight class.”

“Wouldn’t be the first time,” Fi muttered, adjusting her twin daggers as her sharp eyes scanned the surroundings.

Devon stood slightly ahead of me, his blade resting casually on his shoulder, though I could see the tension in his stance. Selene lingered nearby, her amber eyes sharp and focused as she surveyed the entrance.

“Whatever’s waiting for us in there,” Devon said, his voice steady, “we handle it together. No one runs ahead. No one goes off alone.”

Selene didn’t respond immediately, but her gaze flicked briefly to me before she nodded. “Agreed.”

The tension between them was still there, simmering quietly, but for now, the looming threat of the dungeon ahead pushed it aside.

I tightened my grip on the Midnight Fang and exhaled slowly. “Let’s get this over with.”

The dungeon’s atmosphere changed the moment we stepped past the threshold. The air grew colder, the ground uneven and covered in damp moss. Shafts of pale green light pierced through cracks in the twisted roots overhead, casting eerie patterns across the walls.

The HUD pinged softly.

[New Environmental Hazard: Corrupted Spores Detected]

[Effect: Gradual Poison Damage Over Time. Counter with Antitoxin Potions or Protective Spells.]

Fi cursed under her breath. “Fantastic. Nature’s trying to kill us again.”

Selene reached into her inventory and pulled out a handful of glass vials filled with a faintly glowing blue liquid. “Antitoxin potions. Take one now and keep another handy.”

We each downed the bitter liquid, and a faint green glow surrounded us briefly as the buff took effect.

[Antitoxin Effect Active: Poison Resistance +60% for 30 Minutes]

“Stay sharp,” Devon said as he took point, his heavy boots crunching softly against the mossy ground.

It didn’t take long for the dungeon to make itself known. From the darkness ahead, shapes began to emerge—twisted, insect-like creatures with chitinous bodies and glowing green eyes. Their mandibles clicked ominously as they crawled across the walls and floor.

[Enemy Encounter: Corrupted Hollowspinners]

[Level: 22]

[Special Ability: Poison Strike]

“Great,” Mason muttered, raising his shield. “Giant spiders. My favorite.”

The Hollowspinners lunged.

Devon charged ahead, his blade glowing faintly as he met the creatures head-on, cleaving through their hardened shells. Selene darted between enemies with sharp precision, her daggers finding weak spots in their armor.

Fi moved like a shadow, striking from blind angles before retreating into the darkness. Mason held the front line beside Devon, his shield absorbing blows while he struck back with controlled force.

I hung back slightly, assessing the situation as my HUD pulsed with information.

“Time to get creative,” I muttered.

When I activated Shadow Embrace, dark tendrils erupted from the ground, ensnaring several Hollowspinners and immobilizing them in place. Their poison-dripping mandibles twitched helplessly as the shadows bound them.

“Nice setup, Kiera!” Fi shouted, her daggers flashing as she dove in to finish them.

Two more Hollowspinners lunged toward me from the left. I twisted sharply, activating Life Drain, the crimson aura wrapping around them as I siphoned their health. My HP ticked upward as the creatures collapsed into twitching heaps.

“Behind you!” Selene’s voice cut through the chaos.

I turned just in time to see a Hollowspinner leaping at me from above. Instinct took over.

Infernal Command.

The Hollowspinner froze mid-air, its glowing eyes flickering as the skill took hold. It turned, lunging instead at another nearby spider. The two creatures tangled violently before collapsing into a heap.

My HUD flashed red briefly as my health dipped from the HP cost of the ability.

[HP: 45%]

“Don’t overextend, Kiera!” Devon’s voice barked out. “Stay with the group!”

“Got it!” I replied, taking a breath and backing closer to Mason’s shield.

The group worked seamlessly together, and soon enough, the last Hollowspinner let out a screech before collapsing into a motionless heap.

We regrouped, breathing heavily as the dungeon’s oppressive atmosphere seemed to settle over us again.

“You okay?” Selene asked softly, her amber eyes scanning me carefully.

I nodded, wiping sweat from my brow. “Yeah. I’m fine. … gotta pace myself.”

Devon approached, his face set in a scowl. “You’re burning HP too quickly with those Demon Lord abilities, Ki. You need to rely more on your Succubus skills to balance it out.”

Selene shot him a glare. “She handled herself fine, Devon. We survived, didn’t we?”

Devon’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t argue further.

Fi stepped between them, her hands raised. “Okay, let’s not start the bickering again. We still have a dungeon to clear, and I’d like to not die in a cave full of spiders.”

Mason chuckled weakly. “Agreed. Let’s keep moving.”

The dungeon’s path narrowed, and the air thickened with corrupted spores. Flickering lights from glowing fungi illuminated our way, casting elongated shadows on the cavern walls.

We passed through small puzzles and environmental hazards—a collapsed bridge we had to carefully cross one at a time, a hidden trigger that almost sent Mason plummeting into a chasm.

During a brief pause, Selene approached me again, her voice low.

“You’re getting better, you know. Adapting to your abilities.”

I felt heat rise to my cheeks but managed to smile faintly. “Thanks. I’m trying.”

She hesitated momentarily before adding softly, “Stay close to me in the next fight, okay?”

I nodded, my chest feeling tighter than it should’ve.

The path eventually opened into a massive cavern. The ceiling lost in shadow. At the center stood an enormous tree, its bark blackened and twisted, glowing green veins running along its roots.

A faint pulse reverberated through the air—a heartbeat-like rhythm that made my skin crawl.

[Boss Arena Detected: Corrupted Wyrmheart Rootmother]

[Level: 30]

[Recommended Party Level: 25+]

“We’re here,” Devon said grimly.

The party gathered at the cavern’s edge, weapons drawn, abilities ready.

Selene’s hand brushed briefly against mine—a small, fleeting moment of comfort.

“Let’s end this,” I said softly.

The corrupted tree’s roots began to shift, and a low, guttural growl echoed through the cavern.

[BOSS BATTLE: BEGIN]

The cavern trembled as the Corrupted Wyrmheart Rootmother stirred to life. Massive, gnarled roots slithered along the cavern floor, glowing faintly with sickly green energy. A sound—half groan, half guttural roar—reverberated as the ancient tree twisted in place. Its bark peeled away in places, revealing pulsating veins of corrupted energy beneath.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

[BOSS BATTLE: CORRUPTED Wyrmheart Rootmother]

[Level: 30]

[Primary Objective: Eliminate the Source of the Corruption]

[Secondary Objective: Investigate Anomaly Detected in Root Core]

“Okay,” Mason muttered, his shield raised. “That’s… much bigger up close.”

Fi drew her daggers, her sharp eyes scanning the writhing roots. “So, uh… anyone got a plan, or are we winging it?”

Devon took point, his sword glowing as he raised it in both hands. “Kiera, stay mid-range and conserve your HP. Selene, you’re with me on the offensive. Mason, hold the front with me. Fi, focus on cutting down smaller roots and protecting Kiera.”

Selene nodded, her daggers gleaming under the faint light. “Don’t get tangled, or you’re dead. Keep moving.”

I gripped Midnight Fang tightly, my heart hammering in my chest. My HUD flickered as skill cooldowns displayed faint timers beside each icon.

“You’ve got this, Kiera. Focus. Don’t panic.”

The Rootmother let out a screeching wail, and the ground trembled. Roots surged forward, some slamming down like spears, others snaking across the cavern floor like hunting serpents.

The fight began with chaos.

Mason slammed his shield into the ground, creating a protective barrier that absorbed a wave of crashing roots. Devon surged forward, hacking through tendrils with brutal efficiency. Selene darted between attacks, her movements a graceful dance of death as she severed roots before they could lash out.

“Kiera, incoming—right side!” Fi’s voice cut through the noise.

I twisted sharply, activating Shadow Embrace. Black tendrils shot up from the ground, wrapping around two roots and holding them in place just long enough for Fi to sever them with her daggers.

My HP dipped slightly as the skill activated, and a faint red pulse on my HUD reminded me of the cost.

[HP: 70%]

“Keep up the pressure!” Devon barked, slicing through a thick root that lunged at Mason. “We need to expose the core!”

The corrupted bark at the center of the Rootmother began to crack, and a faint green light spilled through like molten glass.

“Kiera!” Selene called out. “Hit the core—now!”

I didn’t hesitate. Raising my hand, I activated Infernal Command.

The cost hit me like a punch to the stomach as crimson energy erupted around me. One of the smaller roots froze in place, turning on its brethren and tearing into the bark with jagged force.

[HP: 45%]

The damage was significant, and the Rootmother let out an agonized wail as its core—a pulsing crystalline structure embedded deep in the wood—briefly became exposed.

“NOW!” Devon shouted.

Fi and Mason surged forward, weapons flashing. Selene leaped into the air, her daggers glowing faintly as she drove them into the exposed core.

The cavern shook, and the Rootmother recoiled, its core flickering and pulsing erratically.

The Rootmother let out a guttural screech, filling the cavern with an ominous green mist.

[NEW ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD: Poison Cloud Active]

[Effect: HP Drain Over Time. Counter with Antitoxin Potions or Buffs.]

“Back—fall back!” Devon yelled, pulling Mason with him.

Selene dashed to my side, grabbing my wrist and pulling me away from the cloud’s expanding edge. “Potion, now!”

I fumbled in my inventory, pulling out an Antitoxin Potion and downing it in one gulp. A faint green aura surrounded me as the buff activated.

[Poison Resistance: Active – 60% Reduction]

Fi coughed slightly, her hand pressed against her mouth as she stumbled out of the mist. Mason knelt, clutching his shield as the poison ticked away at his health bar. Devon tossed him a potion, their eyes locking briefly in silent understanding.

“We can’t let it keep this up,” Selene said, her voice sharp. “Kiera, we need a decisive hit on that core. Now.”

I nodded, my heart pounding. “Cover me.”

The Rootmother’s writhing roots moved with desperate fury now, striking out randomly, cracking stone and splintering wood.

“Kiera, go!” Devon yelled, blocking a root with his sword.

I sprinted forward, Midnight Fang glowing faintly in my hands. Selene kept pace beside me, her daggers slicing through any roots that came too close.

When we reached the exposed core, Selene turned sharply. “This is your shot, Kiera. Make it count.”

I raised my hand, feeling the familiar, burning pull of Abyssal Maw.

[Skill Activated: Abyssal Maw]

[HP Cost: 35%]

The air rippled as a massive void maw erupted from the cavern floor beneath the Rootmother’s core. Jagged teeth of pure shadow energy clamped down, crushing the crystalline structure in a deafening crack.

The Rootmother let out one final screech before its massive body began to collapse. Roots splintered, bark crumbled, and the corrupted glow faded into darkness.

[BOSS DEFEATED: Corrupted Wyrmheart Rootmother]

[LOOT ACQUIRED]

The cavern fell eerily silent. For a brief moment, the only sound was the faint drip of water echoing through the hollow chamber.

As the dust settled, something flickered faintly within the remnants of the Rootmother’s shattered core.

A faint glitching light. A binary fragment.

My HUD pulsed as a new notification appeared.

[ANOMALY DETECTED: Fragmented Binary Code Retrieved (3/???)]

The fragment hovered in the air briefly before dissolving into my inventory.

Selene stepped closer, her amber eyes locked on mine. “That… looked important.”

“It’s what UNKNOWN wants,” I said softly. “Another piece of the code.”

Devon walked up, his sword resting on his shoulder. “And another piece closer to whatever endgame they have planned.”

Fi whistled softly. “This doesn’t feel like something players should be messing with. This feels… big.”

Mason nodded. “Whatever it is, we need to be careful. There’s no telling how many more of those fragments are out there.”

I closed my inventory, the weight of the fragment heavy despite its digital nature.

“Then let’s keep moving,” I said firmly. “We’ve got a long way to go.”

⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅

The remnants of the Corrupted Wyrmheart Rootmother lay scattered across the cavern floor, dark roots twitching faintly as corrupted energy slowly dissipated into the air. The once-ominous cavern now felt still—like a forest after a storm had passed. The faint glow of bioluminescent fungi illuminated our weary faces.

My HUD pulsed softly in the corner of my vision.

[Dungeon Complete!]

[XP GAINED: +15,000]

[LEVEL UP!]

[LEVEL: 22]

I sighed heavily, my shoulders slumping as the adrenaline finally faded. Midnight Fang hung loosely in my hand; the blade smeared with dark sap-like ichor from the Rootmother’s corrupted bark.

“Everyone okay?” Devon’s voice was the first to break the silence, his sword resting against his shoulder.

“More or less,” Mason said, planting his massive hammer into the ground and leaning heavily against it. His armor was streaked with green splatters, and faint cracks marred the edges, but he stood firm.

Fi collapsed onto a nearby rock, letting out an exaggerated groan. “If I never see another glowing green spider root thing again, I’ll die happy.”

Selene stepped closer, her sharp, amber eyes scanning me carefully. “You burned a lot of HP in there. How are you holding up?”

“I’m fine,” I said softly, offering a weak smile. “You’re right, though—I need to stop leaning so heavily on the Demon Lord skills. I’ll… figure it out.”

Her expression softened slightly, and momentarily, I felt the weight of her concern settle over me like a warm blanket.

Devon stepped up beside me. His brows furrowed as he stared at the now-empty space where the Rootmother’s core had been. “How many of these Fragments codes are even out there?”

I shook my head, briefly opening my inventory to glance at the faintly glowing fragment sitting among my other loot.

[ANOMALY DETECTED: Fragmented Binary Code Retrieved (3/???)]

“I don’t know how many there are,” I admitted. “But if UNKNOWN wants them, they can’t get them. This game… it’s too important to let them win.”

Selene crossed her arms, her gaze locked on the fragment icon in my HUD. “Whatever their endgame is, it’s not good. And they’ll stop at nothing to get those pieces.”

Fi leaned forward from her rock perch, her sharp gaze flicking between us. “So what’s the plan? Are we just going to keep dungeon diving until we collect all these code bits?”

Mason rubbed the back of his neck, his hammer still planted in the ground. “It’s not like we have much choice. If we leave these fragments unchecked, who knows what UNKNOWN could do with them.”

I clenched my fist tightly, feeling the cool steel of Midnight Fang’s hilt press into my palm. “That’s why we find and put an end to them, once and for all.”

As we approached the exit, a notification flashed across my HUD:

[Dungeon Cleared: Wyrmbark Hollows]

“Finally,” Mason groaned, pulling himself up through the roots and emerging into the faint light.

One by one, we climbed through the narrow exit, emerging onto a rocky outcrop overlooking a sprawling forest bathed in the orange glow of sunset. The air was crisp, free of the suffocating corruption from the dungeon.

I let out a slow breath, leaning heavily against a nearby boulder.

[Objective Complete: Investigate and Eliminate the Source of the Corruption]

We set up a makeshift camp at the edge of the outcrop, a small fire crackling at the center of our circle. Mason was sharpening his hammer (somehow), Fi was perched on a rock playing with one of her daggers, and Devon was leaning against a tree, arms crossed, his gaze focused on the flickering fire.

Selene sat across from me, her back to the fire, eyes cast toward the horizon.

“This feels… nice,” Fi said, breaking the silence. “The sunset, the fire… it’s like we’re in an actual fantasy novel.”

Mason snorted. “Except the food’s better in this game than most novels describe.”

The banter gave me a faint smile, but my gaze drifted to the glowing fragment, faintly flickering in my inventory.

Selene caught my eye from across the fire and nodded subtly. We’ll figure it out.

As the others drifted off to rest or focus on their inventories, I sat on the edge of the outcrop, staring out over the sprawling forest below. The faint glow of distant waypoints dotted the horizon like scattered stars.

Selene approached quietly, taking a seat beside me.

“You did well in there,” she said softly.

I let out a tired laugh. “I felt like I was barely holding it together.”

“But you did,” she replied, her voice steady. “And you’re still here.”

For a moment, neither of us said anything. The soft hum of the night settled around us, distant bird calls echoing faintly from the forest.

“Selene,” I said finally, my voice hesitant. “Thank you… for having my back.”

Her amber eyes softened as she looked at me. “Always.”

Somewhere behind us, Mason snored loudly, breaking the moment. I couldn’t help but laugh, and Selene’s lips twitched into a smirk.

“Get some rest, Kiera,” she said, rising to her feet. “Tomorrow’s going to be another long day.”

I nodded, watching as she walked back toward the campfire, her silhouette fading into the flickering light.
