Chapter 1: World at War

Chapter 1: World at War

There is a world much like our own. Round and blue, it is a mirror image of our world, but not in this current era.

This world’s geography consists of a single land mass, with all of its inhabitants living on this lone continent.

Although this world does not have advanced technology, magic allows normal tasks to be accomplished with little to no effort. The higher the level of magic that is casted, the more powerful the spell will be.

There are six categories that magic falls under: Water, Earth, Wind, Fire, Spirit (Light), and Shadow (Darkness).

In order to use magic, individuals must first test themselves to find out if they have the the potential to become a magic user, or mage.

Mana, or magical energy, is the natural energy found in all living things and is required to conjure magic spells. Every person’s mana capacity is decided at birth and cannot be changed for the remainder of their lives.

In this world, there are six races, each occupying a single nation a top the only known continent of the world.

They are: Humans, Elves, Dwarves, the Drake, Demi-humans, and the Demons.

The Demi-humans, with the largest population out of all the six races, occupy their home country of Sphinx, located on the north-east part of the continent. The country is divided into territories in which each of the primary species of Demi-humans live. They are ruled by the Council of Elders that jointly governs all of the Demi-humans.

The Demi-humans are one of two races that do not have the affinity to use magic. Though they possess mana, their mana capacity is insufficient for casting spells.

Humans, besides being the second largest of the six races, are the most prosperous of the six races, with their nation of Valeria standing as the second largest nation just after Sphinx. Their country is governed by the King and royal family. The kingdom’s capital, Freya is the largest city on the continent and is famous as the central hub for the trading of almost all commercial goods imported and exported from the six races.

Often criticized for their inferior strength, the Humans compensate for this fact by being the only race with the affinity to use five different magics: the Elemental magics (Fire, Wind, Earth, Water), as well as Spirit magic.

The Elves are the oldest of all six races, but they have the lowest birthrate as well. Eternal and wise, they are governed by elected officials, known as the High Elves, who are in charge of managing their forest country of Celestial. Their capital of Druein is located at the base of the World Tree, an ancient tree that is worshipped as the beginning of all creation. Their wisdom has brought an end to countless conflicts in the past.

The Elves remain the strongest in magical affinity, and are the only ones other than Humans with the affinity to use Spirit magic. Elven mages are also proficient with Water, Earth, and Wind magic, however they cannot use Fire magic for it represents death and destruction in their teachings.

The Dwarves have the fourth largest nation of Gimlee, located next to the mountain ranges that rise up over the land. Their natural talent at making weapons has made them the world’s best blacksmiths. Despite their small size, they are excellent warriors that boast of wielding the most advanced weaponry in the world. They too are run by a council called the Blacksmith Elders.

Though the Dwarves do not have the same level of magical affinity as Humans or Elves, their blacksmiths are peerless when its comes to using their two magics: Fire and Earth.

The Drake are a race of dragon-human hybrids that rose up from the ashes of a major war thousands of years ago.Their country, Astern, is situated in an area filled with active volcanos. Though they are the smallest in terms of population, their overwhelming physique make them the strongest of the six races. Their original bodies were once ferocious dragons, but after establishing foreign relations, they chose to adopt a humanoid appearance in order to interact with the other five races. Nevertheless, due to their origins, they are ruled by a single Drake with the title of Alpha. This title is given to the strongest of their race, who must prove themselves worthy.

As a consequence of abandoning their way of life as wild dragons, the Drake lost the ability to use magic. However, their mana capacities are the largest of each race, and through the use of ancient arts passed down their ancestors, the Drake can use mana to partially transform their bodies into that of dragon’s, such as growing wings and hardening limbs with dragon scales.

Finally, the most mysterious of all the six races are the Demons. Like the Demi-Humans, there are multiple species of Demons, but the extent of their diversity has always remained a mystery. However, it is known that their population is almost equal to that of the Humans, making their race the third largest on the continent. Their country, Astral, once boasted an army on par with the Humans, as well as a very powerful government, though not much is known about daily life in their kingdom as they are a very secretive race. Their ruler is known only as the Abyss King, a very powerful mage who took control of the country by gathering the strongest of the Demon race under his command and subjegated every tribe within the nation, uniting all of the Demons under his banner alone.

The Demons are one of the more unique races in that the only magic they can use is Shadow magic, one of the two most powerful magic categories alongside Spirit Magic. In addition, no other race has been able to use Shadow Magic except for Demons. Demon mages themselves are rumored to rival Elven mages in terms of Shadow verses Spirit Magic, but this has never been confirmed.

Following a period of conflict and unrest, the six races managed to form stable relationships with one another, which in turn led to all of the nations prospering from shared goods and favorable relations.

However, this golden age was not meant to last, and the continent was engulfed in war once again.

Around 500 years ago, the Abyss King amassed his vast army and launched a surprise attack on the neighboring Human kingdom Valeria. The Humans were unable to mobilize their army fast enough to combat the invasion and their forces suffered many defeats. After massacring the numerous villages in its path, the Demon army steadily encroached around the capital city of Freya. Before it could be taken however, the battered army of the Humans managed to erect defensive formations that prevented the total devastation of Valeria’s capital.

Once he had occupied most of the Human’s country, the Abyss King sent his strongest forces to subdue the Demi-humans. Though they fought fiercely, without magical support, their forces were continuously routed by the Shadow mages of the Demon army. Tribe after tribe fell before the Abyss King’s might, and thousands of refugees crossed the border hoping for salvation.

Desperate for reinforcements, Valeria and Sphinx petitioned the remaining three nations for aid. The Elves, Dwarves, and Drake realized their peace would only be temporary if the Abyss King continued his reign of terror, and so they unanimously agreed to a joint front against the Demon army.

Despite numerous losses in the early stages of the war, the vast strength of the allied armies began to push back the dwindling Demon army until all of the lost land had been reclaimed.

With their territories under control, the allied army turned their attention towards Astral. A combined force of over 100,000 soldiers and mages marched towards the Demon capital of Lucifer. However, the remaining Demon forces fought ferociously in order to protect their own country. They did not show any mercy, and none was given to them.

After almost a year of conquest, the Abyss King was slain during the invasion of his stronghold. With the capital set ablaze by the foreign armies and most of the country in ruins, the once great nation of Astral was no more.

To escape retaliation from their enemies who sought to destroy them once and for all, the leaderless Demon race secluded themselves within the safety of natural landscapes too dangerous for other races. Since that day, all interactions with the Demon race have ceased and anyone who tries to step into their land is warned they will never come back.

After what is now referred to as the Longest Night, peace returned to the continent as the people caught in the war started to rebuild their shattered nations.

Unbeknownst to them, the Abyss King would not be so easily defeated.

After another 300 years of peace, Elven mages sensed that the life force of the Abyss King was growing stronger within Astral and sent a message to all of the races. Fearing another brutal conflict, a small subjugation force was established to slay the Abyss King before he could fully revive. The force was comprised of one member of each race who were labeled as the strongest of their people.

During the formation of the first Five Saviors (as they were later called), there was a heated debate between the five races on who would be the designated leader of the group.

Naturally, the noble and wise Elves strongly argued their representative lead the subjugation mission. However, the Humans and Demi-humans demanded that either of their chosen warriors take command due to the fact that it had been their countries that were most affected by the Abyss King's occupation. Their leaders felt this would bring justice for the people slaughtered by his hand 300 years prior.

To quell the argument, the Alpha Drake at the time, who had remained silent until then, proposed a method of deciding the leader in a similar fashion that he himself had gained power.

He suggested the representatives of each nation partake in a series of duels.

The purpose of this tournament was not only to determine the strongest of the five, but also to observe who among them had the capability to lead such a group of diverse warriors, as well as the strength of their willpower when faced with such a difficult task.

For one week, the first Five Saviors competed against each other in what is now famously known as the Savior's Festival. After many fierce and intense bouts, the Demi-human Savior Cassio of the Black Panther tribe emerged victorious and was bestowed the right to command the first Five Saviors.

These Five Saviors rushed into the underground labyrinth that was discovered after scouts ventured into Astral seeking the whereabouts of the Abyss King. From their retelling of events that transpired within the tomb, after a devastating fight in which two of the Saviors perished, the Abyss King was vanquished once again. The three surviving Saviors returned to a hero’s welcome and their names are celebrated by every race to this day.

However, as there is always day, there must always be night, and so after another 200 years, on this year, the Elves have foreseen the second resurrection of the Abyss King. Just like in the past, each of the five races must choose a single savior. These new Five Saviors must battle the Abyss King for the sake of their people once again.

Continuing the tradition of the first Saviors Festival 200 years before, a second tournament is held to decide the leader of the newest Five Saviors.

After one week of fighting, the Human Savior emerged as the victor, stunning the other races who had been deemed superior to Humans.

With all of the information that is available on the Demon race and their country in their possession, the five heroes set out on their mission

A long and dark road lies before each of them…

Whether they decide to walk it or not is their choice alone…
