Chapter 36: Whispers From The Forest (4)

As Osric inched forward, every nerve strained in wary apprehension, the cave's maw yawned wide before him, veiled by a drape of drooping vines and moss. They swayed gently, forming a natural curtain that intermittently revealed and concealed the looming darkness within. Tentatively parting the vegetative shroud, Osric ventured into the black abyss, disappearing into the hidden womb of the earth, feeling the temperature plunge abruptly, an icy gust that gnawed at his skin and stole the warmth from his breath.

His exhale hung in the air, the frost-kissed fog a ghostly apparition swirling in the gloom. The chill slid down his throat and filled his lungs like a frosty warning whispered in the wind.

Within the depths of the cavernous hollow, a dim illumination eked out from an unexpected source. Bioluminescent crystals, embedded like gemstones in the jagged rock walls, punctuated the darkness with their spectral glow. Their lambent light shimmered with an otherworldly elegance, bathing the cave's rugged interior in an ethereal, bluish hue. The diffused radiance danced across the sharp reliefs and deep crevices, crafting fantastical shadows that loomed and swayed, turning the cave into a mesmerizing chiaroscuro.

Although an expert in the local flora, Osric found himself in unfamiliar territory. His studies were always confined to the ecosystem thriving at the foothills of the Darkhold Mountains. His knowledge of topography and the materials it harbored was infantile compared to his fluency in flora.

Drip. Drip.

Water's rhythmic fall echoed ominously, reverberating off the stony walls. Each drop resonated within the cavern's hollow belly, amplifying the sound until it resembled a persistent heartbeat, the cave's own life pulse.

As Osric's eyes acclimated to the dim light, he discerned clusters of iridescent mushrooms sprouting from the moist nooks of the cave floor. These luminescent fungi radiated gentle hues of pale greens, soft blues, and whispers of violet, their phosphorescent glow transforming the cave into a subterranean spectacle. Neon fungi, great for lighting up dark areas and could be used in potions that would enhance night vision.

The cave walls, craggy and chaotic, rose high above him. Stalactites hung like nature's icicles from the roof, their mirror counterparts, stalagmites jutting up from the earthen floor. The air within the cave was rich with the raw scent of damp earth mingled with a musky undertone, hinting at an unseen underground stream somewhere in the cave's unseen depths.

The cavern itself seemed deceptively small, with a narrow passage snaking further into the darkness. The silence, oppressive and complete, was punctuated only by the distant dripping of water.

Guided by the grisly trail of blood that disappeared into the cave's darkened innards, Osric ventured deeper.

"The traces are still fresh," he observed. A swipe of crimson now hardened to a rusty crust, was lifted to his lips. "Predator," he determined from the flavor, markedly saltier than that of herbivores, with a notable lack of bitterness. But there was something else.

It required a second sampling for him to discern these characteristics. Closing off his other senses, he only focused on the taste of blood. It was unusually viscous, with a pronounced umami profile and…a creamy undertone from excess fats.

A hunch began to form in his mind. Pushing aside improbable explanations, he pondered on the unique taste and texture of the blood - probable signs that pointed towards a creature roused from its deep hibernation. Yet, the current season contradicted his speculation; summer was well underway, and spring was already a distant memory.

"My senses are duller than expected," he chastised himself, "I needed a second taste to notice the subtleties. I need to take this into account." With this newfound revelation tucked away, he proceeded further into the cave, his senses sharpened, his eyes guided by the ghostly illumination of the crystals and mushrooms.

The slender passageway expanded, morphing into a more spacious chamber that offered more insights into the cave's inhabitant.

Scattered across the cave floor, Osric noticed skeletal remains of various animals, the bones picked clean, their surfaces cleaned and polished by an unseen tongue. Some were smaller creatures like rodents. He spotted the skull of a hedgadger among the pile. While others appeared to be larger predators, he could make out a decomposed remains of a marrowshine hippopotamus—hinting at a history of predation and survival within the cave's depths.

"These creatures didn't die here; they were killed and brought here," Osric murmured, running his fingers over the worn stone floor, feeling the polished smoothness where the bodies were dragged. "Only a creature of considerable strength could manage such a feat. A beast of Rank 1, at the very least. A desolate beast.”

Continuing his exploration, Osric observed the fur of different creatures snagged and scratched upon the rocky surfaces, evidence of territorial marking or fierce confrontations that had taken place within these confines.

Moving with the utmost caution, Osric's grip tightened on his spear as he approached the sound of trickling water. As he ventured closer to the source, a sight unfolded before him that sent a surge of adrenaline through his veins—a gargantuan creature, its presence dominating the landscape.

The bear towered over the gently babbling underground stream, its form an imposing silhouette against the cavern's eerie backdrop. Its fur was a variegated streak of deep browns and blacks interlaced with dignified gray. Its formidable stature was further enhanced by crown of jagged spikes adorning its robust back, chest, and knees, their sharp points catching the spectral glow of the bioluminescent fungi.

Underneath the protective layer of fur, the bear's muscles rippled with raw, brutal strength. Bone plating, a natural armor, shielded its forearms and chest, rendering it a daunting adversary in this subterranean world.

With a jolt of recognition, Osric realized what he was observing. A Hiberus Bear, a beast typically found deeper in the forest, was now but a stone's throw away. However, this beast was marred by telling wounds.

A deep, savage gash was gouged into its back, stretching across the rippling expanse of its muscular form. Blood had flowed freely from the wound, staining its fur and dripping onto the damp ground. The edges of the gash appeared torn and mangled, indicating a vicious attack that had caused severe damage to the creature.

Once a symbol of its formidable strength, several of the bear's spikes were now cracked and torn off. The jagged remnants jutted out at odd angles, the once impregnable fortifications now shattered and humbled.

The bone plating covering the front of its body, meant to protect the vital organs and provide additional defense, showed signs of trauma. Some sections were chipped and splintered, revealing the underlying layers of dense bone. Despite the bear's formidable nature, these injuries had significantly weakened its natural armor, leaving vulnerable areas exposed.

Without a sound, Osric retreated, pressing himself against the cool cave wall. The stone offered a fragile shield, a thin curtain of security against the beast. He dared not make a sound, his breath stilled, his every movement careful, lest he betray his position. Turning back, he tread softly, retracing his steps toward the cave's entrance.

Assured that he remained undetected, he sank to the ground, his muscles humming with unspent energy. He reached into his bag and pulled out a handful of essence stones—precious reserves he had saved for dire circumstances. As he examined them, a plan began to crystallize in his thoughts—a dangerous gambit.

With his decision made, closing his eyes, Osric called forth the reservoir of energy sleeping within his nodes. He allowed the energy to circulate throughout his body, stirring it into action. He redirected this potent stream towards his left hand, focusing the surge on his refined bones of his index and middle finger. His energy enveloped the intricate mesh of fractures he had so painstakingly created.

Normally, the refinement of the body was a permanent process. Unless subjected to decay over time, the refined parts—be it muscle, bone, tendon, or any internal organ—remained permanently enhanced. The human body functioned as a closed system, where the energy employed within would be confined to that system. During refinement, the body parts and energy would amalgamate, resulting in a fortified physique. The transformation was irreversible.

Thus, Osric taking his predicament into account, he had resorted to fracturing, a method that subverted the standard protocol of refinement. He redirected his already scarce resources to create a secondary closed system within his body, forming a mesh that would augment his combat efficiency.

He tapped into the mesh, taking the lattice closed system and wrapping it around his two refined fingers. Refinement was permanent. That was final. It was a one-way system.

Yet, as he probed deeper into the recesses of his fortified bones, a deluge of energy erupted. His mesh acted like a black hole, voraciously sucking in the energy from the two fortified finger bones and collecting it within the mesh. A wild, unrestrained tempest erupted, threatened to submerge the lattice mesh. A stinging sensation took hold of his hand, escalating into a searing pain as the energy flowing from his refined bones threatened to overwhelm the mesh. Before it could reach a critical point, he steered the energy into his muscles. His forearm and triceps eagerly soaked up the energy, voraciously devouring the energy, the muscles swelling with newfound strength.

This feat was only possible due to the unique closed lattice system he had formed within his body. Through the technique of fracturing, Osric was able to fabricate a buffer, a mediator between the world's energy and his physical form.

To be stored within the human body, the world's energy required an anchor, a stable point of tethering. In the absence of such an anchor, the energy would scatter, dissipating into the ether. This anchor was typically found in the expanded cavities of one's nodes, where all usable energy was stored. During refinement, the energy formed a permanent tether with a specific body part, transforming it, and enhancing its capabilities. Thus, when people refined their bodies, the energy was irreversibly integrated into their physical forms. However, the combination of Osric's fracturing technique and the lattice mesh allowed him to exploit the energy without entirely assimilating it. He refined his body parts but tethered them to his mesh, which was a movable closed system, allowing refinement to be a reversible process.

This gave him the ability to draw upon the stored energy of his refined parts at will, freedom to translocate this energy in his body, reinforcing and redistributing where he needed. Since he did not have to clean the absorbed energy and slowly fuse it with his body as that was already done, the refinement would happen immediately.

Nevertheless, his ingenious method was not devoid of drawbacks.. As Osric extracted the energy from his left-hand bone, a fraction of it was inevitably lost within the bone itself. While the refined energy was potent, its harnessing was not wholly efficient. Additionally, as the energy remained untethered, his body parts did not exhibit the typical enhancements of traditional refinement—strength, agility, and speed were all slightly reduced. Nevertheless, Osric's method traded raw power for versatility and adaptability—a strategic adaptation in fracturing, which served to widen his arsenal for improved combat efficiency.

Having drained his bones of their refined energy and channeling it to reinforce his wrist, forearms, triceps, and back, Osric's energy reservoirs were on the brink of depletion. Reaching into his bag, he extracted more essence stones to replenish his nodes. Even though he was not expending additional energy as he was only redistributing, the process of guiding and maintaining the mesh was a power-hungry endeavor.

Fracturing was a resource-consuming venture. The sheer effort of mesh maintenance placed a significant drain on his reserves. For the time being, he was capable of managing the expenditure, but he acknowledged the looming risks—if he were to engage in a more extensive body refinement process requiring a larger mesh, future complications were bound to arise.

Ensuring that his nodes were filled to the brim, he expelled all mental distractions, preparing for the encounter.
