Prologue
Have you ever seen a world filled with statues? Cars frozen in place, Planes hanging in the air overhead, and people looking like the most detailed sculptures ever made. For me, this is the world I see every day. And now, I cannot help but wonder why I am here.
My name is Alex I am 19 years old and I am about to start freshman year at a special school. It is called The Academy and everyone there has powers just like me. They are ranked class 1-5 with 5 being people who can bring about earth shattering mind bending calamities and 1 being able to bend a spoon without touching it. Their tests placed me at the bottom of the threes but somehow I think that I should be at least a 4. They classify me as a teleporter- one who cannot go through walls but can move any distance in an open space. But that is just because they cannot see me. I am a speedster, and I would be surprised if there has ever been another one as fast as me.
Period 1
As I was eating breakfast on my first day of college I looked at my schedule as I had for the hundredth time as if that would change what was on it. I have ethics at 8:15 and combat training and self-chosen electives after that. The combat I didn’t mind, It was useful to be able to protect myself, especially if they could teach my how to do it without showing my powers, but ethics just seemed to be a waste of time. I have been forced to take it since I got my powers as a kid and it has always been the same uninteresting useless class no matter where I was. Don’t use your power in a way that endangers others. Don’t look down on those weaker than you and those without power. And never ever kill. I have followed these rules my entire life and see no reason why they should be lectured at me again for an hour a day 5 days a week. But no matter how much I hated it I had to go if I wanted to stay in school. So when the clock said 8:10 I finished up my breakfast, went back to my dorm, changed, and went to class. I mean no matter how much I was going to hate the class I should be there 5 minutes early on the first day. The classroom was small only seating around 20 people, and 11 people were already there. One of them was an older women who I presumed to be the teacher. I stopped running outside and walked into the class and took a seat in the back. Once it was 8:15 the classroom still had some empty seats and the older women stood up and began addressing the class.
“Hello class, you can call me Mrs. Taylor or Tapestry when masked and I will be the head of your ethics class. I know many of you are dreading this class, but it is a necessity. I will try to avoid absolutes and lecturing but if you are going to use your powers you must know what circumstances you will use them under. Will you expose your true face to the general public to save a life or do will you only use your powers when your face can be hidden behind a mask. I am dismissing you now but before the next class I want one example of when you would show your identity to the public.”
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Once she finished her speech I walked out already knowing how I will answer her question tomorrow in class. If I use my power in public no one will even know it was me unless I let them.
Period 2
The next class was combat. As I walked into the classroom I saw what I suspect to be our entire grade. 5 minutes after I got there a booming voice and turned to see an older man who must be our combat teacher. As soon as he got everyone’s attention he started talking saying
“My name is Mr. Jones or Wall when masked. I am your combat instructor and today we will start with one on one combat. You will each be assigned partners and will try and figure out how to deal with their powers for this class. The only rules are you cannot severely injure another participant. If it will heal in under a month naturally then you may use it on your opponent other than that I do not care how you incapacitate them, only that you do. Now either myself or an assistant will call out your names. When you here it you should go to them and begin sparring.”
I waited for maybe 15 minutes observing others fights without any real interest when I heard
“ Alex teleporter 3”
I walked over to the assistant and she said “your opponent is Michael. He is a tank 4. You should meet him in ring six.”
I walked over to ring six and saw someone who was must have been over 7 feet tall and wide enough that he had normal proportions already standing in the ring. I stepped into the ring signaled that I was ready and waited for the match to start. They started the countdown from three and as soon as it hit zero everyone looking at the ring saw Michael disappear. For them it looked like teleportation but for me it was a real hassle. I had to go find a sled big enough to carry him and then bring it back into the ring. After that I dragged the sled somewhere I knew he couldn’t get back from quickly dumped him off, put the sled back where I found it, and stepped back where I was in the ring.
After a moment of silence Mr. Jones came over and asked
“Where did you put him” I wondered if I should not have showed off but I decided that they would have seen it eventually so I answered
“Mount Everest” Mr. Jones stood there for a second without saying a word so I clarified saying.
“The peak” He stared for a second longer before saying
“Bring him back so he can continue with his next opponents” He started to walk away but I stopped him and asked
“Does this mean I win?” He turned around and looked at me for a second before saying
“He cannot continue the fight can he?” I nodded then he said “Then you won”
I brought Michael back then used the same tactic to beat the next four opponents. After the fourth Mr. Jones called out and said “that is it for class today. When you come back tomorrow rankings will be posted.”
