Chapter 3

Tutorial World #336: Day 1

“Your Soul Summon is the first of your magical summons and is tied to your soul,” the disembodied voice described. “Not only does it share characteristics of your own soul, but it will evolve as your own soul does. Unlike other summons, your Soul Summon will only die if you do, meaning it will come back if defeated in battle without the need for a revive spell. The strength of your Soul Summon will determine the length of time that it will need to recharge before being ready for active use once again. Without your Soul Summon, you will be more vulnerable to attacks of both magical and physical nature. Your own attacks will also suffer a penalty. Losing your Soul Summon will most likely lead to your death and should be avoided at all costs. You have no more questions remaining.”

Barot wished that he hadn’t wasted his first two questions. He wanted to know about his family back home and if he would ever see them again. He wanted to know how to work the system that was used for this “Magiplane.” He was worried he would make the wrong choices.

The voice spoke again but began fading away slowly. “To bring your soul to the Tutorial Plane and make the required changes, your body was killed on Earth. Your current body is attuned to your soul and is also prepared to return to your homeworld after the integration has finished. Use this time wisely to complete The Tutorial’s main quest and prepare for your eventual return to Earth where you and your fellow surviving Tutorial members will help guide Earth’s remaining population through the transition from nonmagical to magical. The rest of the Cosmos is coming and Earth needs to be ready…”

The voice faded away on that last sentence, leaving a sense of urgency in Barot’s mind and heart. He was still incredibly confused but knew that he had to thrive in this new life. If he was being honest with himself, he was just as excited about his new life as he was terrified and confused. He was going to have magic! And summons?

I wanna be the very best… he started think-singing to himself. Oh man, if this was the path that he was now on, one of his life’s dreams was definitely coming true.

Speaking of summons, Barot had to really start looking into this new life. He saw what looked like conversation bubbles in the corner of his vision and he thought about looking at them.

Welcome. You have been chosen to complete The Tutorial. Please choose a name to replace your numeric designation #006022.

A line with a cursor started flashing in front of his eyes with an accept or cancel button below.

New name? He thought to himself. I don’t have a problem with my name.

Barot thought about his name and the name Barot David Pignota popped up into the line. He mentally clicked the accept button. A loud NOPE-sounding noise rang in his ears.

Barot David Pignota is dead. You must choose a new name to recognize your new body.

Barot wasn’t sure if he agreed that he was dead considering he was standing right there reading the messages, but he could at least see the significance of leaving his old name behind. He was going to be existing in a new world and if someone were to figure out his old identity, he could see how that could lead to some issues. Every Isekai he had ever read made sure that the main character’s true name was never known. Knowing someone’s true name gave you power over them.

Having been a chemistry and physics teacher for high schoolers, he would sometimes be called Dr. Pignota jokingly because of all the labs that they did in class and the precision with which was necessary to achieve success. He always enjoyed that nickname. He changed what was on the line and mentally clicked the Accept button

Thank you #006022. Your name is now “Doc.”

With that notification flashing across his eyes, he felt a jolt run through his body. It was as if the action of taking a name solidified who he was here in this new existence. After the jolt, a new screen popped up, a familiar face staring back at him.

It was his status screen, complete with a mini 3D manikin of himself. Or at least it was himself at an initial glance. The whole body was slightly different. In his past life, Doc had been overweight despite having been a decent athlete growing up. He didn’t get to play sports on a regular basis and really liked food. He wasn’t upset with who he was, but it was definitely harder to keep up with his kids when they were running around him. This body was what his body must have looked like without any alterations, good or bad. It was the shape of an average adult male in his mid-30s. Nothing really made the body stand out. It definitely wasn’t ripped with muscles or anything like that.

Besides the little 3D image of “himself,” Doc could see his stats to the left. Weirdly, they were all currently at 0. Above the image of himself and the stats, his name, race, and age were listed. His Health and Mana Bars read as undefined, but he assumed that that had to do with his stats being all marked at 0. At least it looked like he had 100 characteristic points to distribute, so those should change momentarily.

He was very interested in his unique ability. Back on Earth, he was a “roll with the punches” kind of person. He never felt like he was out of the game because he was able to adapt to the circumstances. Instinctive Adaptation seemed as though it was magnifying this aspect of himself. It made sense, then, that this was a unique ability just for him. He was just thinking about never accidentally misplacing a stat point in the wrong area. He would always have a way to change to what the situation required. He felt like this ability could really allow him to be free from any one path.

He was also very excited about the Instinctive Knowledge perk of the ability. He could always be learning. He hated being mentally stagnant. This would allow him to learn valuable Skills, even if it were just for one day. He could then decide whether or not it was a Skill worth pursuing. The Skill Store sounded interesting, but he didn’t know what the currency would be and how hard that would be to receive. If it was American USD he was boned. Even before he came here he didn’t have a lot extra.

That thought left a bitter taste in his mouth. It made him think about his wife and his two beautiful children. Apparently, they thought he was dead. Who knows, he might never make it back to them.

No! he thought. I will make it back to them and show my family that I will never abandon them. Doc would be strong for his family and make it back to them one day. He honestly didn’t care about anyone else.

The other Ability, Soul Summon was next on his list to check out. His status screen had stated that there was a card in his inventory. He didn’t even know that he had an inventory! As soon as the thought crossed his mind, a 10 x 10 grid popped up. There was nothing in it except for a small dagger, two potions, and an elaborate card-carrying case. Doc mentally dragged the card-carrying case to his hand and held it up to observe.

The case was slightly larger than a typical playing card set. It was all matte black but had intricate gold swirls across the case. Looking at the box another notification popped up.

Soul Summon Card Carrying Case

(Uncommon)

Durability: N/A

This case carries a summoner’s first summon: the Soul Summon. This case can be used to store a summoner’s other card summons. While being used, the summons stored in here regenerate at an increased rate of 10%. Soul Summons regenerate at an increased rate of 20%.

Doc wasn’t quite sure if the box had good stats or not but considering the case was at least an uncommon rarity, it could be worse. The notification had been the same color as the box, so he figured it had to deal with the Soul Summon card inside.

He reached into the box and retrieved his Soul Summon Ritual Card. It continued the same black and gold color scheme as the box and prompt but radiated a thrum of power. Doc felt as though he could truly feel the power of the legendary summon in his hands. Another prompt jumped in front of his face.

Would you like to activate your Soul Summon Ritual Card? Yes or No

Without thinking any further, Doc mentally selected yes and his world changed forever.

A gold-lined circle sprang from the center of the black card and fell to the ground in front of Doc. The inside of the gold circle turned completely black as concentric gold circles began ringing around toward the center. From the center of the web-like design, a large ursine-like creature hovered, prowling the web. It turned its head toward Doc and made a silent roar. From the open maw of the beast, a bright light spilled out over the dark ritual. The light was so bright that Doc turned his head and covered his eyes to not be blinded.

Then, as soon as the whole ordeal had begun, the light blinked out and the black and gold ritual diagram faded away. Doc’s eyes began to readjust to the normal gloom of the forest when his eyes landed on the form at his feet. He gasped as his soul met a part of itself and a deep connection was made.

At Doc’s feet was a midnight black bear with gold streaks running down its sides. The face was that of a younger bear cub, but the size was 3 or 4 times larger than what he had ever seen of a bear cub on Nat Geo. At about 70 or 80 pounds, he would not be messing with this beast. But mainly that was because instead of the normal quadripedal animal Doc was used to, he was looking at a bear with 8 extra segmented legs extending from its back. This was a formidable beast and Doc was both terrified and thrilled at the same time.

Congratulations! Your Soul Summon is of a Legendary breed. Your Soul Summon is an Ursarachnid, more commonly known as the Spider Bear. The Ursarachnid is a wickedly intelligent hunter, setting traps for its unlucky prey. While its dextrous spider-like abilities make it a great assassin, the Ursarachnid also has the strength and vitality to protect itself and its brood from any trespasser into its territory. This is a young cub of this ancient and bloodthirsty monster race, but it still has the instincts of a killer. Beware what it could become if properly taken care of and nourished.

Looking deep into the young monster’s face, its status screen popped up for him to see all of its glorious details.
