Vaitrill let out a yawn and rubbed his nose. These days always seem to drag. Nothing but the most monotonous paperwork to do, even tormenting those under him would lose their entertainment after a while. But if someone didn’t get the paperwork done then the Kin Empire would grind to a halt.
The Kin family certainly didn’t appreciate the fine details that went into running an empire and that's where people like him stepped in. It was a thankless job sure but it still had its appeal, or rather benefits. If it didn’t then he certainly wouldn’t be here.
He shifted his shoulders awkwardly as his wings twitched and stretched open. He decided that after this was all said and done he would go for a nice relaxing flight through the burning everglades. It had been a long time since he just took some personal time like that and it was long overdue, he was even close to leveling up. Perhaps he could find something to help push him over that edge.
His ears twitched when he heard echoing footsteps that lead to his office echoing down the hall. The high end material of the building and lush carpet doing nothing to minimize the sound to his senses. Even if they were an expert in stealth of the physical sense which they certainly weren’t, their aura was more than a little hectic, they obviously weren’t very good at controlling their presence, he would note them down for “training” after he heard whatever news they wanted to bring him.
Before the person had a chance to know Vaitrill spoke “Come in”
The person hesitated a tad before opening the door, his aura spiking a bit in fear as he stepped in revealing himself to be an ork with the painting of a sun across his shoulder signifying he was from... Some clan. It was hard to keep track of all those minor clans that held such little importance. At least the man had a good sense to realize he had probably screwed up with making himself so obviously known when arriving.
“I am terribly sorry to disturb you sir. But I have a report here from scouting division 13 and was told to bring it to you immediately.”
Scouting division 13? He opened up his information crystal and browsed through it until he found them. “Ah, yes. They are currently patrolling the border between us and the Matriel republic correct? I doubt a report would make up the chain to me if there was some mild skirmishing. What is it then?”
“Sir! They have reported a freshly integrated planet has appeared right on a disputed border between us and the Matriel republic!”
Vaitrill resisted the urge to let out an exasperated sigh “Calm down… What was your name again?”
“It’s uh. Urgush sir”
An average ork name for such an average ork. “Calm down Urgush. It’s likely the system is just trying to incentivize a little blood shed. Do we have energy level readings?”
Urgush glanced at his own information crystal briefly before looking back up “Yes sir. While it is hard to tell because the veil is still to thick, we believe it is likely F grade”
“There, see, hardly anything to get worked up over. I doubt Matriel republic will send anything more than a couple million G, F and E grade soldiers to contest such a little territory. They will probably view it more as a great way to bloody some of their newer recruits.”
He took out an information crystal and began pursuing it for a bit “Let’s see… Ah, General Irrant. Yeah, that seems like a good fit. Send a message to him and let him know he is being assigned to secure this F grade planet, he may take 20 low tiered D grades, 100,000 E grades, and 800,000 F grades, and 1,600,000 G grades to use as his forces. Preferable recruits who haven’t been in many battles. No reason why we can’t do the same as the republic.”
“Have 70% of those recruits be of middle standing with the empire, and about 30% of them to be on the higher part of the low end. Give them a chance to claw their way up with some merit” Vaitrill continued but then paused paused for a second before correcting himself
“Actually if I am sending General Irrant to lead them I should switch those numbers. Have 70% of the forces be on the higher part of the low end and 30% be of middle standing but preferably the lower part of the middle standing. Don’t want our offices to get bogged down by so many complaints. Am I understood?”
“Yes sir. Uh…” Urgush shifted a little awkwardly and Vaitrill frowned as he glared at the awkwardness Urgush was displaying.

“Well, speak up. You clearly were about to say something and there is no going back now that you have spoken. So speak” He spoke in an authoritative tone that brokered no room for disagreement.
“It’s just that. Are you sure it would be a good idea to send General Irrant. N-not that there's anything wrong with him or his family! I just-”
“Oh calm down boy. Yes I am well aware of General Irrant issues and had this planet been of anything of slightly more valuable or in a more strategic location I would have been better off sending just about anybody else”
“Then.. Why are you sending him? I feel like Matriel will send somebody that is also Peak D grade or perhaps low C grade. But these forces are nothing more than skirmishes. Not worth sending a General with such backing as General Irrant.”
Vaitrill let a small smile creep on his face. “You might not be aware but General Irrant has been getting too high and mighty, talking back and down to people who have had far more experience and are of a much better character then he would ever be. But because of his family we have been unable to punish him the usual way.”
Urgush's eyes suddenly widened with understanding “So you are sending him to deal with a very low and inconsequential battle that is both not worthy of his station or status as a form of punishment!”
“Exactly. It’s about time somebody taught that brat a bit of a lesson. If he wins this minor territorial dispute people will laugh at him for fighting over such a weak territory. And if he loses for whatever reason. Well such utter humiliation would be wonderful and with any luck, maybe his family will disown him rather than suffer the shame. And if nothing truly comes of this little endeavor. Well he is prideful enough to believe it would be a waste of his time, which it is, but he will still view it as the insult and punishment that it is.”
Urgush nodded in understanding “He will probably be more mad about this assignment than any conventional punishment. His family will certainly complain.”
“Let them” Vaitrill smirked “There is nothing they can do about it without potentially damaging their relationship with the crown”
“Understood”
“Now back to the topic at hand. This F grade planet. The veil is probably weak since it is such a low grade, did the scouting division note if there was any specific dominant race?”
Ungush looked at the information crystal for a couple of seconds “Ah! Here it is. The scouts believe the main dominant race on this planet are humans.”
“Ugh. Why are humans everywhere? I’d call them cockroaches but even cockroaches have the decency to not show up on a few of the freshly integrated planets.”
Urgush simply shrugged his shoulders in response to Vaitrills comment and he resisted the urge to sigh. Some races just didn’t understand the inferiority of humans. But he should have expected nothing less from an ork so he continued “Do you have a report of when the veil is likely to fall?”
‘No sir. It was so freshly integrated when it was found so the energy levels of the veil haven't had enough time to fluctuate but since it is most likely an F grade world. I doubt the veil will remain up for more than a decade or two”
“That would be the usual I suppose.”
“Uh sir. Going back to General Irrant and the forces we are sending to secure the planet…”
“Yes? What is it.”
“Should we allow authorization of infiltration? I understand it isn’t cost efficient and wouldn’t be worth it but if we are treating this more as a training regiment for recruits. Perhaps it would be prudent to send one maybe two inside.”
“I understand where you are coming from Urgush but you are right, it wouldn’t be cost efficient, if we were to allow such a thing to happen, even if it was for training, we wouldn’t do so for just an F grade planet. There wouldn’t be much training to be had for anybody and it most certainly wouldn’t be worth the cost.
“Perhaps if the dominant race on that planet were celestials like myself or the Kin family it would be prudent but it is just a bunch of humans. But knowing General Irrant it would probably be best if we specify no Infiltration. I could easily see him trying to get do that as a sort of “Fuck you” to us. Good call.” He concluded seeing what the ork was getting at
“Thank you sir!” Urgush looked proud of himself for doing something that Vailrill would have noticed within a few minutes anyways. But he suppose he would let the ork take this victory. He was feeling quite generous today.
“Alright then. If you will please wait here a moment while I get the orders ready.”
Urgush stood at attention as Vaitrill started putting out his orders into a transponder crystal. Once done he handed it off to Urgush
“Have these sent to Irrant, if he tries to reject these orders…. Let me rephrase that, when he rejects the order, tell you off, and then threaten you in some way, immediately send the communications my way and I will deal with it”
“Thank you sir!” Urgush responded with clear relief and TIllian noted some tension had left his body that the ork likely didn’t even realize he was holding himself.
“And one more thing Urgush”
“Sir?”
“I have taken a liking to you. Once you are done with your duties today, I think I will take some time out of my busy schedule to personally oversee your aura training” A sadistic grin stretched across Vaitrill's face as Urgush tension came right back.
“Return to me when you are done with the day. You are dismissed”
Urgush awkwardly saluted and left faster than was proper, a mistake Urgush will make sure he understood by the end. It would be pretty amusing to fly through the burning everglades with a nice little show to watch on the ground.
