Chapter 16 - End of hostilities

Jason shot at Ryner, but the latter had quickly ducked behind the car.

“Dude! You threw a Molly at us!” [Jason]

“Yeah, so?!” [Ryner]

“You lured us to throw a Molly! That’s unfair!” [Jason]

“You want to know what’s really unfair?!” [Ryner]

“What?!” [Jason]

“It was whiskey!” [Ryner]

“WHAT?!! GODDAMN WASTE, MAN!!” [Jason]

“You like whiskey?!” [Ryner]

“I LOVE WHISKEY!!” [Jason]

“ALMOST AS MUCH AS YOU LOVE DUBSTEP?!” [Ryner]

“I! FREAKING HATE!! DUBSTEP!!!” [Jason]

Jason randomly shot around the car that Ryner hid behind to avoid hitting Jessica. It was simply a waste of bullets, but it was stronger than him. His hatred for dubstep had won against his rationality.

“A M1911 pistol. Not bad, I guess.” [Ryner]

Ryner, who cozily stayed hidden, was examining the handgun that he had just taken from the deceased Tahir. The firearm was semi-automatic and was L-shaped. It had a steel grey body and a dark brown wood grip. Pulling back the slide on top of the gun slightly, he checked the bullet in the chamber through the ejection port.

“Looks like a .45 ACP cartridge.” [Ryner]

Then, he pressed the button on the right side of the grip with his thumb. It dropped the rectangular magazine stored in the grip and he looked at the number of bullets that it contained.

“Mmm, five rounds in total. Better than nothing.” [Ryner]

Lastly, after sliding it back in the magazine well, he looked at Jessica.

“You alright?” [Ryner]

“… Y-yeah.” [Jessica]

She was lying prone with her hands on her head and shivering in fright from suddenly getting caught in her first gunfight.

“T-thanks for doing this for me, Ryner.” [Jessica]

“No problem, kid.” [Ryner]

But, no matter how terrifying the experience, she firmly believed that it was better than following those people back to their Brotherhood base. Of the two remaining members of the group, only Jason could still fight. Gary didn’t die since he had managed to put out the fire, but his clothes were in tatters and his legs, right arm and stomach suffered burn injuries.

“Ugh… Jay… I’m hurt, seriously…” [Gary]

He managed to crawl back to his leader who hadn’t given up yet.

“Hang on, bro. I’ll deal with this guy first, and then I’ll help patch you up.” [Jason]

“Hey, Jason!” [Ryner]

“WHAT?! YOU ALREADY OUT OF AMMO?!” [Jason]

But, the battle did not go as he expected.

“Uh, I think we should stop fighting!” [Ryner]

“HUH?! WHY?!” [Jason]

“Oh damn…! Bro…!” [Gary]

Gary slapped his arm and he finally noticed it.

“What the…?” [Jason]

From behind him, at the intersection between two streets, hundreds of zombies were slowly approaching his position. It was the same on Ryner’s side. The two opposing teams of humans were caught from behind by a wave of walking dead bodies. Their gunfire had attracted them.

“Didn’t you say they were no zombies around?!” [Ryner]

“I did and I was wrong! Damn it, we stayed too long!” [Jason]

Hostilities instantly ceased.

“If I don’t shoot you in the back while you’re escaping, will you let me safely visit your base?” [Ryner]

“HUUUH?!!” [Jason]

Almost.

“Will you? Will you not?” [Ryner]

“You’re the one that said we should stop fighti-!” [Jason]

“Hurry up! They’re getting closer!” [Ryner]

“AAARGH FINE!” [Jason]

Jason reluctantly agreed, quickly making the decision that would ensure the best chance for his survival.

“I’ll send you an invite another time laters!” [Jason]

“Hey, wait, dubstep lover!” [Ryner]

“I HATE DUBSTEP!” [Jason]

He lent his right shoulder to Gary and the two took off running in the direction where they came from. That meant going through the horde of undead. However, they were flooding in from the intersection, from the street on their right. There was still an opening on the left side of the street that they were currently on, but it was quickly disappearing. So, the two stayed close to the wall of the building on their left and sprinted as fast as they could to squeeze through.

Perhaps partly because of luck, they managed to reach the intersection as a horde of zombies closed in on their right. Unfortunately, due to Gary’s wounds, their speed wasn’t great enough. The moment when they turned left to run down the street and away from the infected, the burned young man was caught.

“AHHH!!” [Gary]

Multiple rotten hands latched onto his body, grabbing his right arm, shoulder, flanks and head, pulling him towards them. Teeth sunk into his flesh, spilling blood from his neck and arm. Gary screamed agonizingly while desperately holding onto Jason’s right wrist with his free hand, forcing him to a stop.

“AAGGH! AAAHH!! JAY!! JAAAAAYY!!!” [Gary]

He yelled out, calling for help with his expression twisted in fear and pain.

“OH HELL NAW!!” [Jason]

BANG

Jason quickly shot him in the head, reaping his life. Then, he shook off his hand and bolted, escaping from the hundreds of undead just as their fingers grazed him.

“Damn it, he left without telling me where his base is.” [Ryner]

When the two Brotherhood members took off, Ryner, who was grumbling, was quickly searching the body of Tahir.

“Are you kidding me? He’s out of ammo!” [Ryner]

Sadly, among the three magazine clips he found on his person, none of them contained any bullets. He rapidly searched the three other fallen men as well.

“Ryner! W-we, we need to run!” [Jessica]

Jessica, paled-faced, urged him. She was standing by on trembling legs, wearing her backpack and carrying his in her hands. She looked like she wanted to flee as soon as possible.

“You mean like they did? Sprint by the zombies? Impossible. I can’t guarantee your safety if we do that.” [Ryner]

Ryner said in a rather carefree manner.

“Besides, it’s too late.” [Ryner]

A horde of zombies was on their left and right and getting closer, effectively blocking any escape path. Jessica sported an expression of despair as she watched the lumbering infected that were covered in blood completely fill the street.

“So…” [Ryner]

Ryner took his backpack, picked up his duffel bag and grabbed Jessica’s wrist.

“We’re going back.” [Ryner]

“Huh? Back? By back, you mean…” [Jessica]

----------------------------------------

“… Of course we’re back here.” [Jessica]

Jessica muttered forlornly as she stood inside Dacles Rubicon.

“I stepped outside for the first time, got caught in a shootout and then lots of zombies appeared. This is just not my day… But, then again, when is it your day if your city’s overrun by zombies…?” [Jessica]

“Come on, cheer up, kid. We’ll be out soon. Now, let’s go.” [Ryner]

Ryner lightheartedly encouraged her and waved at her to follow him to the stairwell. The young woman looked behind her, at the row of entrances to the building. Countless zombies were banging on the doors using their hands or heads, making them incessantly rattle. A massive horde of flesh-eating monsters had gathered just outside, making her shiver.

“You think they’ll get in?” [Jessica]

“Maybe if a super strong infected shows up or they learn to pull a door open. Let’s not stay to find out.” [Ryner]

The two climbed up the stairs and headed for the second floor. The layout was similar to the 20th, so they ended up in a T-shaped corridor with elevators, washrooms and two doors leading to the offices. Ryner eliminated the zombies present using his sledgehammer.

“This is so much easier than a gunfight!” [Ryner]

“… No, I think it’s still pretty difficult.” [Jessica]

Jessica said as she watched him rapidly dispatch every undead in one blow.

“Compared to people that can run, hide, plan and use weapons, zombies like these are nothing.” [Ryner]

He told her in a carefree manner, though it sounded like boasting to her. However, she couldn’t help but agree when she saw the bodies that he left in his wake. Once he cleared the area, Ryner entrusted his baggage to Jessica and bashed opened the door to the offices after telling her to hide in the washroom in case a strange infected was present. Luckily, there were only shambling, human-looking zombies.

So, he ran laps around the floor, never staying in one place for long, and killed all of the undead in his way. They were too slow to keep up with him and their movements were too clumsy to catch him. Equipped with a sledgehammer, Ryner effortlessly tore through them.

However…

“Betty!” [Ryner]

The wooden handle right beneath the heavy tool’ head could no longer take the force exerted on it and snapped. The hammer’s steel head that was covered in blood flew through the air and heavily landed on the floor.

“Is it the bullets?! Is it because I used you to block bullets?! Or is it because I crushed too many zombies?!!” [Ryner]

He asked rather tragically, though didn’t shed a drop of tear for his broken weapon. He was instead more preoccupied with killing the remaining infected using the handle that was left, his own body and whatever was lying around. The reach and the force behind his blows had decreased, but he could still cave in their skulls. Once only a single zombie remained, Ryner tossed it on its back and stomped down on its head, squashing its brain.

“… I should have taken a baseball bat too, not just guns.” [Ryner]

He said as he dropped the bloodied, broken handle that had lost a chunk of its wooden body.
