III. The job

Komari was meditating cross-legged in the small room of one of the club numbers on the lower levels where the transporters and all the criminality of the surrounding levels met.

She felt a rat sniffing her before running away in the face of a force impulse, this time Komari had decided to follow the Jedi'i meditation method by purging himself of all his emotions to become one with the force. She could hear the echo of people moving around the level. The force allowed her to feel people for a hundred meters, but when she meditated, her perception stretched for miles.

This kind of mediation was very practical when she wanted to find someone or something.

Usually people let her meditate in peace in her corner, well that was especially true after she cut off the hands of a guy who had wanted to disturb her.

She was eight years old and, like all street children, she was much more mature for her age and much more hardened.

Thanks to her job as a transporter, she could most often eat her fill, even if the food was not really good. All the food on the lower level was nothing but infamous nutrient blocks or dead rats. As for the water it was extremely polluted, the alcohols sold in the clubs were in fact a chemical mixture many times cut with gasoline.

The last two years of training had been extremely beneficial to her because she could stand up to and defeat any adult without too much difficulty, which was crucial in her environment.

Komari was the only 8-year-old transporter who could transport valuables such as spices or sensitive items normally worked for gang-affiliated and older carriers.

What appealed besides her reliability and courage was that she was not affiliated with any gang, she always remained neutral in gang conflicts, which often designated her to serve as a messenger between warring gangs.

She had attached to her waist to a quality belt, steal her vibro-blade souvenir of Mila as well as a blaster offered by a gang leader to whom she had done a favor by killing one of his men who had tried to overtake them both.

He was huge in her child's hands but he was also very precise, which meant that she was often underestimated.

Komari didn't think she had any talent in the shootout given the few opportunities she had. The price of a blaster's energy cell was a luxury she couldn't afford, but the object was still a deterrent and in the narrow corridors there was little chance of missing her target.

"Komari, Komari!" Calling a small way, Komari broke his meditation and opened the door of the room to find Simon, the youngest of her family behind her.

"Hey Simon, who is it? Shouldn't you be home? She asked, rubbing his head horribly. He had become her light to always smile, his overflowing curiosity had led them to explore every corner of their level. Each of their escapades was a new adventure away from the problems of everyday life.

"There are members of Zolan's gang at the Komari house, they want to see you and threaten Farique and the others," Simon said in his little voice, trying to contain his anguish for him. Without really succeeding because she detected fear in her voice.

Komari frowned, Zolan's Gang had a very bad reputation in the circle, even with other Gangs, because they never respected the rules common to all gangs.

Moreover, they had just crossed one, never involving or threatening the family or even breaking into the family's living space.

This gang was foreign by the standards of the lower level, information that she had been able to get here and there she had learned that this gang was the remnants of a gang of the higher level whose boss Hutt had lost a turf war.

To escape the usual clean-up that followed the death of a sector Hutt chief, they had fled to the lower levels with the ambition of establishing themselves.

On Nar Shadda the Hutts were the law, their cartel ruled the planet and then subdivided into sub-branches by clans and level. The youngest of their clans were given the leadership of a lower level that he controlled through his criminal networks. He is then free to try to dominate the neighboring Hutts in order to gain power to then climb in the hierarchy and eventually rise to the next level.

In the end, Nar shadda was a vast training ground for young Hutt, and the rest were just pawns in their little power games.

There was one exception to this, the lower levels below level 50 was nicknamed the undercity, the Hutts had no interest in it, no power because they were too far from the surface to have any interest.

Komari and his family inhabited level 88, one of the last habitable levels, the other levels being either infested with strange monsters or totally underwater. Until now, Komari had only seen 5 times the light of day when she climbed to the upper level, what she had mistaken for rain was actually a mixture of pipe discharge and condensation created by the engines of the ships of the loading docks from levels 45 to 50.

She entrusted Simon to the bartender threatening him with the worst atrocities if he did not take care of his brother and then returned home at full speed.

Zolan's gang members were absolutely not discreet, they were all around his house, you could see the difference between them and the local gang members. They had many laser weapons in good condition, blaster rifles as well as some armor.

The local gangs were limited in terms of blasters, the majority of the fights they fought took place with knives.

Komari didn't know what Zolan's gang wanted from her, but since they were at her house and holding her family back, there was no point in her being discreet.

The voices in her head whispered to her to be careful, but she pushed them away.

When she arrived in front of her house she was violently knocked to the ground and dragged before Zolan himself.

The latter was the son of a good family in the upper town, his dress denoted that of his men by its luxury. Instinctively Komari knew that he was a bad person, he was not physically strong but the gleam of sadism in his eyes made him understand that he was having a good time hurting others.

"So here is the famous Komari Vosa. You know people are full of praise for you, you are reputed to fulfill all your contras no matter if the merchandise has been stolen from the Hutts or from the Mandalorians or even if you have to get it back into guarded places. He exclaimed when he saw her with a small smile on his face.

Komari dusted off her clothes with the dust before answering her, a sign that she didn't give him any respect.

"Yes, I'm Komari Vosa and I guess you have something to carry. Or to go flying. »

"Yes, but it's because she's perceptive."

"Then make a request in the rules instead of bringing you back to me with your men and threatening my family." She gave him the finger, not necessarily the best thing to do when someone threatened his family but it allowed him to decompress.

"Ha my dear Komari, I was told that you were extremely intelligent and mature for your age, but I see that this is not the case. I have indeed a job for you that differs a little from what you usually do. Zolan's suave, yet sadistic, voice rose with a gesture, he motioned to one of his men, who struck Komari on the back, throwing her to the ground again.

"Come to the point quickly," she said, grimacing before getting up cautiously.

"There is a ship at Pier 114, the Fierfly, and there is on board in its navigation survey information on the movements of a certain Senator Bachure. I want you to bring me his information and everything you can find about the senator in exchange, I wouldn't kill your little family of stinking rats. he ordered.

There was no room for negotiation, no room for manoeuvre, he used weaker than him to take risks. Komari knew that her small size and reputation had worked against her because the only way to discreetly pass through the security of the ultra-secure Pier 114 was through the narrow pipes that led to the void under the landing platform of the ships. The place was an ultra-secure port with a real army capable of vaporizing Zolan's gang. Located on a gigantic tower that pierced the clouds it was the garage of all the important people of Nar shadda.... and Komari was to infiltrate her.

Climbing to the surface took half a day by public transport but it was expensive. No, the easiest and cheapest way was to go up to level 44 and hang on to a cargo ship that went up. With the traffic and depending on the ship, the journey could take about twenty hours to get back into the transit tunnels. We had to hang on because the winds in the heart of the tunnels were strong enough to tear a man from the ground.

Komari had spotted a transporter going up through a tunnel not far from the area where platform 114 was located.

She had made a detour to Rogna and Balk's weapons room to retrieve some equipment they had in stock. The latter were not on the planet because a contra had sent them for several months to the core worlds. If they were the Komari wouldn't have hesitated to ask for their help.

What she had retrieved from them was a hacking kit capable of getting her through the service doors leading to the pipes. Komari had also taken a homemade bomb that she had made with Rogna when the latter had started showing him how to make explosives a few months ago.

She just hoped that the bomb wasn't going to explode in her hands, not being at all sure that she could control the firing.

She was lucky on the surface, it was raining showers which would reduce the visibility of the guards and significantly affect the detection sensors. Unfortunately this would make his progress even more dangerous because the pipes were filled with water and the sockets suspended under the platform extremely slippery.

Accessing the pipes had been child's play, she had cracked the encoding of the door in a few seconds.

Under the glowing setting sun, Komari began to climb the underside of the platform of the statio port. The holds she could hold on to was limited, Komari grabbed with all her strength the few fasteners located under the platform she had already almost fallen four times during her progress. She could make out the lights of the base city below her as night began to break.

It was with real relief that she hoisted herself onto the platform, dragging herself like a slug so as not to be blown by the wind that was howling in her ears.

She paused to catch her breath, the progress above had taken more than two hours and a good part of her energy. A single mistake would have meant a fatal dive.

The Fierfly was located in the center of the platform between two luxury pleasure boats, Komari was quickly able to reach it, the potential guards being sheltered from the rain.

The Fierfly was a mix between a senator's ceremonial ship and a luxury ship thanks to the forcing keys given by Zolan, she had no trouble getting inside the ship, not unhappy to be able to take shelter from the rain.

It was probably the most luxurious ship she had ever seen, it was worth being a senator, she said to herself as she climbed to the cockpit, it took her a few minutes to find what she was looking for, the central computer.

It was from here that she was able to access the ship's information and especially the navigation survey as well as the captain's note.

Komari found what she was looking for when she came across the ship's navigation history between several planets. She then went to the senator's room, the luxury of the room was frightening, according to her., Komari almost had to squint his eyes not to be dazzled by the bright reflections on the decorations.

The senator's personal terminal took her about twenty minutes to hack before she noticed that a computer-it stuck in a corner with the said passwords.

Upon entering the terminal, she quickly looked for anything that could be compromising to blackmail the senator according to Zolan's request.

What she found was edifying, the senator was dirtier than the lower levels of Nar shadda. He was involved in everything, insider crime, corruption, blackmail, arms sales, sex trafficking and so on.

While searching further Komari came across something unexpected, in a hidden file were the bank details of all the senators' accounts, personal account and secret account. There was even on one account the revenues diverted from the trade taxes of his planet.

Komari felt her heart start beating fast when she came across the senator's passwords who seemed to be afraid of forgetting them.

It was his chance to offer a better life to his family, with this money they could leave Nar shadda to go live in a more peaceful world. Why not on an agricultural world? Farique had always dreamed of having a farm and Simon would surely like it.

Komari calmed down and copied all the documents onto two cipher diskettes that were lying around. On both of them she placed a password that only she had as insurance. But the key she was going to give to Zolan contained only something to blackmail the senator while the one she looked for on her contained all the information, including banking information.

Quickly, she had all the information erased from the senator's terminal, becoming the only one to master her secrets.

Two distant presences touched her, it was imperceptible yet she did not like it. His instincts told him that something was going to happen.

It was time to leave, she took the way out, it was still raining when she got off the ship. So much so that she did not see the two individuals dressed in a brown cape facing her.

One was tall, he had a noble posture and his features were charming. The other was small, the size of a child, or even smaller.

"I told you, Yaddle, there was a beautiful rat in Bort." Says the greatest to the smallest.

"That's amazing, Dooku, I didn't feel it at all, you were right," replied the smaller one, named Yaddle.

That's when Komari saw them, she stopped because she had heard their discussions, Yaddle, Dooku were names that had resonated strangely in her mind for years. She knew without knowing who they were two Jedi'i masters... no Jedi, the question was what were they doing here in front of her, in front of Senator Bachure's ship.

"Young girl, give us what you stole from this ship." Dooku asked with great politeness but his tone did not suffer from any refusal as he held out his hand. Behind them appeared the guards alerted by the Jedi, they pointed their weapons at Komari while shouting orders to the contrary. She couldn't not move while lying down while raising her hands and crossing them at the same time.

The latter was stuck, she couldn't face two Jedi masters, let alone several armed guards, but she couldn't give up either because her family's life was at stake.

The presence of the Jedi was unexpected for her and upset her plan which was to leave without a noise after her theft and to quickly deliver the requested data.

"You're going to give me what you stole!" Dooku repeated with a strange intonation in the voice. Komari wanted to give it to her, it was hypnotic, but she resisted his imperative by shaking her head to chase away the last mist in her mind.

"I thank you for this Jedi solicitation but no, I'm going to keep what I stole because I have an imperative need for it, life depends on it."

Dooku raised an eyebrow, surprised by the girl's resistance, Komari began to move nonchalantly to the side to the right and then to the left.

"You lower level rat don't move!" A guard yelled. "Give what you have taken and we will be sympathetic."

The guards were not as calm as the Jedi because the presence of a thief on the dock could cause them problems with the senator or the rich merchants. Worse, the Hutts, their employer, could decide to make an example of them.

Komari smiled, the idiots they were hindering each other at the risk of hurting each other by shooting. Her seemingly random movements were intended to destabilize them and not make her a static target.

As the guards shouted threats, Komari gently pulled a fumigant grenade from her belt that she had bought on the black market in anticipation of such a situation.

The cylindrical body of the grenade slipped at the foot of the guards who looked at it with a thunder.

When she exploded, Komari was already rushing, sneaking through the haze of fumigent between the guards, she had almost reached storage crates to climb on to reach the roof of a hangar that a firm hand grabbed her shoulder.

"Not so fast, my child." Dooku said without her being able to perceive his presence.

But he was surprised by Komari's reaction who turned on herself in a totally controlled movement, twisting her wrist at the same time and thus forcing her to let go. In the same movement, she moved Dooku's foot with her foot, controlling his balance, causing him to fall to the ground. The movement had only taken half a second and had taken advantage of the Jedi's inattention.

Without asking for anything else, she fled, climbing onto the hangar to jump on the roof of a house beyond the barrier of Pier 114 with the guards following her, who were waking up from their stupor.

Dooku literally stayed on his ass for a while until Yaddle came to pull him out of his astonishment.

"Are you okay with Dooku?" she asked, just as surprised as he was to find him with his buttocks on the ground.

"This kid knocked me down without strength using mine instead and..." She didn't seem to panic as much as I would have thought given the situation. »

A series of blaster shots comes from their exchange.

"They're going to kill her, they have to be arrested." Yaddle scolded but was stopped in her tracks by Dooku.

"I'll take care of the girl, you'll find out about Senator Bachure's movements." Without waiting for his answer, he rushed in pursuit of the guards.
