In the misty darkness of the night an old truck slowly creeped along the road headlight illuminating the cracked asphalt. The truck really shouldn't have been on the road, its age barely being before antiquity. It barely crept along rattling so much you would think the rust coating it would fall off like so many little snowflakes but regardless it had arrived at its destination. The one dim headlight shined of a simple town sign ‘Herthton Population: 841’
As the truck slowly passed by the streets drawing closer to the center of town the houses it passed became less unique till the people who had built the cookie cutter homes hadn't bothered to change the paint they used. At the center of the town it drove around the town’s one claim to fame, the expanse park. The town was centered on the park, the business and public buildings surrounded it and the houses surrounded them. The truck pulled into the small parking lot of the ‘mall’ , really just a bunch of tourist shops and restaurants in a line facing the park.
The first person that got out of the car was normal. The only thing remarkable about her was her purple hair and eyes but the other ‘person’ was not normal to put it lightly being a huge wolf that could barely fit into the dilapidated truck.
The voice that the wolf spoke in was like if thunder had been crammed into a bottle.
“Finally we are here I do not see the reason we had to take that cursed contraption!”
The girl shoot him a death glare.
“Will you be quiet! We don’t want to scare anyone with a giant talking wolf.”
Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.
The wolf cocked his head.
“Isn't that why we are here to bring back wonder and uncertainty to the humans?”
“We can't scare them off! Now will you please disguise yourself?”
It was a long ride and they were both exhausted and annoyed with each other. With a lot of quiet growling he slowly shrunk
to the size of a normal dog.
“Happy now?”
“I'm never happy.”
Withdrawing a golden doorknob from her bag she approached the only empty store front and gently placed it on the push bar the metal and glass door seemed to glow as a light brown seemed to creep and grow around it. The metal and glass merged, becoming a stately wooden door streetlight shining off its polished face. The rest of the shop seemed to follow suit. The large windows that peered into the empty building shrunk the glass folding like fabric as they turned into 3 small circular windows.
The concrete and metal seemed to glow with a inner light as they slowly shaped themselves into large logs. Eaves grew like ivy pushing their dark faces out of the roof. And finally like small creeping vines small metal chains grew out of the eaves dropping down to form a simple blue sign. A Splinter of Magic. Where a gratfitt tagged storefront used to stand a small cabin now stood smushed between the stores.
The wolf sniffed at the sign.
“My name was better.”
The witch wearily stumbled back and the wolf quietly moved behind her.
“How is Willard Wolfies Magic shoppe better? Willard isn’t even your name.”
Letting the witch lean against him the wolf responded in a mock sulky voice.
“It has alliteration alliteration is better. It also would have brought in more kids.”
The witch shook her head
“Kids already have wonder, we need those that don’t.”
Still lightheartedly bickering they entered the new shop. All while the town slept unaware that magic was now among them.
