An Odd Little Village

"I write to you,

          Oh pure little child.

     I write to you,

          In hopes of bliss.

     I write to you,

          Oh star of the wild.

     To the one and only,

          Fairy of Nys.

     Village Chief Reynold Stone

     3rd Epoch, 397th year, 4th month, 8th day."

Placing down the flowers on the grave, Roland stared blankly. Just days ago the village chief was walking around, talking vibrantly. His bright personality illuminates any room he steps into.

Now, he was just another body lying in this graveyard.

Tears welled in Roland's eyes as self blame racked his whole being. If he hadn't gone out of the village. If only he had listened when Reynold said the woods were dangerous.

Rolands eyes tightly shut as these thoughts attacked his mind. This caused him to miss the faint glow that emanated from the grave. It slowly coalesced into a small orb that shot at Roland.

A sharp pain shot through his head as Roland's body instantly crumpled. Already struggling to hold it together the physical pain pushed him to faint.

-----

One day passed before someone found Roland collapsed by Reynold's grave. A group of people rushed over to help Roland out of the graveyard and into the town's medical house. When they realized he was safe an argument broke out between the 5 of them.

"The boy has no one else." A tall man with a robust figure spoke. His voice low and gravelly.

"That's why one of us should take him in!" A man in a stark blue robe spoke, his voice echoing in the air despite speaking quietly.

"I'm out, the kid would be in more trouble with me then anyone else." the tall man spoke and everyone nodded in agreement.

"I don't mind raising a kid, I've always wanted to try!" A vibrant lady in gray spoke, enthusiasm practically oozing from her words.

"And kill the kid with one of your experiments!? It's a miracle you're even alive, don't drag the kid into it!" The blue man spoke, his voices causing the other 4 to frown.

"Like you're one to talk. If you took the kid in, all those artifacts you have lying around will probably kill him if not the echoes first!" A tall woman in leather armor growled at the man in blue.

The tall man began nodding before pausing, his face twisted into an odd expression.

"I think we are going about this wrong, maybe instead of deciding who wants to take him in, we should decide whos normal enough for a kid..." The tall man's words caused the other 4 people to stop talking, before they all looked at one person.

"I think we are all in agreement," the man in blue spoke and the other 3 nodded.

"Sylvy, we think it's best if you take him in." The tall woman's voice turned gentle as she spoke to a short woman in red.

The man in blue's face contorted in disgust at her voice change before speaking in agreement, "We think you're the only one out of the 5 of us that can do it."

Sylvie's head tilted for a moment before she nodded.

"I think you're all idiots. I won't say much of anything else but I think you might've forgotten something," She pointed at the blindfold on her eyes, "I can't see!"

For emphasis she lifted the blindfold up on one side, only to show a long scar stretching across her face, etched from her left temple to her right.

All four of them looked away in guilt before the woman in gray spoke, her voice more subdued than before, "Don't worry Sylvie, you won't be the only one taking care of the child! We'll all come around to help!"

"Honestly Sylvie, out of all of us you're probably the only one who can do it," The tall man pointed at himself, "I'm wanted in at least three kingdoms and an empire," he pointed at the woman in white who quickly turned away in embarrassment at his next words, "the little paladin over here has a gambling problem and some serious anger issues," he pointed at the man in blue, "the professor has no regards to safety when it comes to artifacts," and he finally pointed at the woman in gray who jumped in excitement, "And she runs experiments that are only borderline ethical simply because Reynold told her to," As if realizing something he put his hand down awkwardly. "You're the only one who might be able to raise him without endangering the child."

Unable to refute Sylvie stomping her feet, "It's not like you're the only ones who have problems!" She walked past them into the medical house perfectly despite her lack of sight.

"If only we could find a way to fix her eyes," Sighing, the woman in gray spoke dejectedly.

"If it weren't for Reynold having found a clue out here we wouldn't all be in this dingy little town." The man in blue spoke and the other 3 nodded.

"Speaking of, when are we going to hold a meeting about his death? I suspect the clue might have something to do with it," The woman in white turned and looked at the trees in the distance as she spoke.

"It's only been a week, let's wait until Roland gets settled before we discuss anything important. That's what Reynold would want," The tall man sighed before walking away.

-----

As Sylvie walked into the medical house she realized something was wrong. Her presence became thin and she stopped making noise completely.

Making her way across the house quickly she finally stopped in front of the room that held Roland before she stepped towards the closed door. Instead of colliding, her body passed through it and she appeared on the other side.

There, she "saw" Roland, or rather, a great amount of lesser and basic spirits circling around him.

Alarmed she was about to approach before a bright flash of blue covered her vision.

"Stop! If you get any closer you might disturb him, and he might end up worse than you!" A cute little voice spoke with a strong sense of urgency.

Sylvie's entire body grew rigid as she became alarmed, for a spirit to speak it would have to be at least an intermediate level spirit. For a being of such stature to be here...

Normally a mortal shouldn't be too close to spirits as it may damage their vessel, meaning Roland should be in danger. However, spirits are unable to tell lies, meaning that rather than danger from the spirits they might be helping him instead.

Sylvies body relaxed at the spirits' next words.

"We don't mean any harm, the child here is showing the signs of awakening as a Faeling. Seeing as how you knew the man who rests in Mother Earth's Embrace, you should understand what this means." The cute little voice revealed itself as a small little orb with a vibrant blue color that seemed to cool the air around it.

Shock was apparent on Sylvies face as she "looked" over to Roland, only to notice a faint glow that wasn't there before. Besides the specks of light that signify spirits, this was the first thing she had seen in close to 5 years, and the first person.

She was shocked most by what the light meant, to be a faeling meant that your affinity to the elements and spirits would develop to an astonishing degree. To put it in material terms, it made it far easier to sign contracts with fairies, it raised affinity with elves, and brought a myriad of other similar benefits as well.

With that alone it would be an alluring status for anyone alive, but that doesn't include the greatest benefit, all faelings are blessed by the goddess of light and love Ciel, allowing them to awaken an ability known as "Lis" or "Law."

A Lis is an ability outside of the common understanding of magic and doesn't seem to correspond with any of the known elements. However, for how powerful an ability it is to awaken there is a stark contrast. To awaken a Lis means you have to withstand the Laws of the world in which it relates to.

To put it simply, if you awaken a Lis of gravity, you will have to withstand said gravity until you finish the awakening.

This means the more laws your Lis handles, the more you have to withstand to awaken it. However being a faeling awakens the gift while eliminating those dangers thanks to the goddesses blessing.

Letting out a sign of relief, Sylvie pulled up a chair and sat beside Rolands bed waiting for him to awaken.
