Spirit of the Forgotten
Prelude to Disaster

Prelude to Disaster

El woke up tired. He didn’t have much reason to be tired which made it all the stranger. As he lay in his dimly lit room thinking about such things, the sunlight peeks from the confines of his curtains and hits his face, forcing him out of his self-induced reverie. Sitting only half up in bed, El checks his surroundings and unsurprisingly, his bedroom is just the same it had been from when he had fallen asleep. There wasn’t much in it anyways, El had made it a habit to stay out of his house so his bedroom consisted of his bed, a personal computer and his clothes which at the moment were heaped on the floor. His computer screen beckoned him, flickering from the previous night's unfinished activity but would have to wait because today was a big day.

Today wasn’t just a big day, today was a life-changing day by even the most modest of standards. Or so he was told, in truth El had no recollection of what day today was or the importance of it but his best friend wouldn’t shut up about… something. “Oh well, I'm sure he won’t let me forget it once I check my messages; he probably spammed me all morning anyways.” As El swung his legs over the side of his bed he heard the faint ding of a new message through the headphones hanging on the armrest of his secondhand office chair. The distance from the bed to his computer was negligible as his dreary room was compact—or, as some would call it, “cozy.” But that is besides the point; El never once thought about the size of his room as a negative or positive fact, it simply was the way it was and he was perfectly content with it, what he was not content with though was the unfathomable number on the screen of his PC hovering over a small icon.

“Alright alright goddamn it, i'm here” El says to himself as he sits down and opens his chat; that really is an unreasonable amount of messages first thing in the morning. He opens up his messages from FD and immediately fires back at him.

Accept message from – FacetiousDespot – ??

CP: Holy hell dude I just got out of bed, what's with the spam??

FD: Finally! I was thinking you may have forgotten your login or something, I’ve been trying to get ahold of you for ages.

FD: Check the news, literally anywhere.

CP: Dude I'm not checking the goddamn news, just tell me what happened.

FD: Fine, be a stick in the mud, see if I care.

FD: You know DynPwr right? The megacorp that has been making all of those sketchy power plants all over the world since last year.

CP: Of course I do, they’re the only reason I get stable power living as far out as I do

CP: Did they do something crazy again with their solar tech?

FD: No, they did something even more insane, its actually absurd how out of the blue they announced it this morning.

Accept message from – AberrantSeraph – ??

CP: Oh AS is here too, let me add her in the group

FD: Great, now I was gonna add her but she wasn’t answering either

AS: well forgive me for being asleep during such a momentous occasion, I didn’t get much of a warning before hand

FD: No I’m sure I told both of you that something big was happening today, right CP?

CP: Somethin’ or other like that

FD: Seeeeeeeeee >:(

AS: alright fine I might’ve had a small hint something may happen today. i’m here now

CP: Also it’s like 6am so give us some leeway.

FD: Fine fine, it’s happened already. I would appreciate you guy trying to care a bit more about how exciting this is though.

FD: In any case DynPwr announced what they are doing with all of those power plants you mentioned before. They are going to be power plants.

CP: …

FD: Infinite power, power plants.

CP: …

AS: …

FD: Guys don’t you understand how insane this is?? What's with the reactions?

AS: is that even like possible?

AS: im looking this up

CP: I’m with AS on this one, this feels pretty out in the realm of make believe. You for real on this?

FD: That's the crazy part, it seems like it's not a marketing strategy or promotional. They announced it as if they believed in it.

AS: woah you left out the juicy part, everything that you said is true but they also havent explained how it works, if it even works at all.

FD: No I was getting to that, it's such a mystery right?

CP: Sounds fake ngl, what makes you so sure about it?

CP: I know the solar breakthrough they did was unbelievable at first considering how advanced it was but they off rip explained it. This seems so unrealistic, there’s no such thing as infinite power.

CP: Honestly even if it is real and they start using it would you trust it at all if its unknown how it works?

FD: Well yeah there's the catch, and there's no way to know until monday when they unveil it and test it whether it works or not. And it's also unknown if they will even reveal how it works then.

FD: But if it does prove to be infinite just think about how our lifestyles would be immediately impacted. It would advance us hundreds of years into science fiction. It would probably increase the average living standards by tenfold.

FD: DynPwr is such an established part of our world at this point that there's no use in thinking they’re straight up lying, there's no benefit seeing how massive they are.

CP: Honestly you are probably right, there's no reason to believe them.

CP: Shit this is pretty massive

AS: I don’t like this

FD: What??? Why?

AS: doesn’t it seem a little too good to be true?

AS: that's a cliche saying but more often than not its right

AS: to me i see a megacorp with a mysterious panacea to our energy problems and no motive, cost or leadership. Tell me, do either of you know who leads dynpwr?

FD: Well on their site it says their founder is Dan Harvey but it actually doesnt list a current CEO or anything

CP: That sounds like a fake name anyways lmao

AS: regardless if the name is fake or not its a very secretive corp, generally thats red flag number one when it comes to megacorps.

FD: I see your point but I don’t think they are going to lie about this still, im going to stay optimistic.

CP: All the power to ya man, I’m going to log off and get some stuff done.

AS: me as well, I’d like to look into this a bit more tbh

FD: Suit yourselves, I’ll be here

“Damn, is he ever dramatic” El talks to himself as he exits his room, a little in shock from the bombshell just dropped on him. Taking one glance back at his bedroom he shakes his head a little and walks to the main room of his small house. Looking around for a bit he finally decides that he’s alone for today; Dad must have gone to town again. Without realizing it he relaxes minutely and settles down to eat the left out breakfast presumably left by his Dad.

Today was Saturday. A day of relaxation from the week supposedly; not that El expected to have that luxury. For better or worse he had things he wanted to get done these next two days. And now he has pressure of his world possibly going through a world changing scientific breakthrough, not that he was as dramatic as FD would be about it. To be honest El already wrote it off as something that wouldn’t affect him for the most part; just something so utterly detached from the world he knew. And who can blame him? El lives comfortably without the struggle for consistent power that many in the world know so through the next few days he wouldn’t think about it and just go about his day. FD doesn’t know what he is talking about.
