Spellbound by Hidori
Chapter 2 - Classless and Penniless
*Flash*
Landing in the spawn area near the fountain, Rohan is stunned by the world he has landed in.
‘This virtual reality thing feels unreal, or perhaps it feels far too real for a game’
Looking around he spots plenty of people in the same kind of starter gear as himself.
‘Seems like I will have plenty of competition here, but I wonder how my stats look, I remember that it’s a voice system’

Race: Elf
Most of the elven race is frail and delicate but nimble,
they possess inborn knowledge, a keen mind and an old soul.
Frail: First 150 Strength have a 50% slower stat growth
Delicate: First 150 Vitality have a 50% slower stat growth
Nimble: First 200 Agility have a 50% faster stat growth
Inborn knowledge: Bow Mastery easier to learn and advance, 50% faster growth until Intermediate
Old soul: First 50 Wisdom have a 50% faster stat growth
Keen Mind: First 50 Intellect have a 50% faster stat growth
“Growth… hmm… with that much minus to the natural stat growth, Yuri might need double the normal time to complete the training hall”
A small smile creeps on to the face of the cheaply dressed elf.
“That gives me a better chance to get a head start at the very least”
Closing the stats window and looking around he spots the mage tower that he had heard was right next to the mage guild.
“Well, at least I can easily find where I need to go eventually”
Like all the other people who start the game, Rohan was trapped inside the walls until 4 weeks inside the game had passed, or 1 week in real time. So there was no need to go to the mage guild at this point.
Especially since he had heard that magic is expensive and some aspects of it can’t be learned unless you have sufficient wisdom and intellect.
“The map I found on the net seems to says that the public library is in the middle of town, right next to the town hall”
“Go go go!” sprinting with all that he have down the street, impatient to start the stat grind needed for his magical career.
3 minutes later.
“gahh… huu… haa… hee….” A few streets from the newbie spawn lies a red haired elf in starting gear on the ground and heaves after air, and looks very close to death.
“huu… note to self… hee…the extra agility makes elves fast….huu… but a stamina of 10 don’t amount to much….”
A few minutes later he looks less dead.
“But quite the embarrassing way to find out the limitations of a level 1”
“Think I’ll just walk the last bit”
All around him were players giving him looks, regardless of Shin´s assurances that the 3 of them will have a high cool factor when together; right now he just looked odd and out of place.
A sudden realization dawned on him, and he had to stop to think it over.
“Crap, what if it isn’t Shin´s plan, but one of Yuri´s crazy schemes”
Shin is quite meticulous with most of what he does, but Yuri is at best haphazard and chaotic, and almost all “plans” she makes, if you can even call them “plans”, backfire in the most spectacular and random ways.
One particular bad time, Yuri had gotten a sudden craving for strawberry ice-cream. It had taken most of an afternoon to explain to his parents that coming home with his pants on fire was getting off lightly.
Worst part was that Shin would go along with Yuri´s schemes without hesitating, and then just sit back and watch and enjoy the chaos like he was at the cinema.
“Well, if it is Yuri´s doing, she won’t let him off if he doesn’t do the same as us”
Noticing that he was blocking the way he started walking once more.
The town hall was quite easy to find, but the library was surprisingly unassuming, if one did not know it was there, one might never notice it.
-Cling clang-
Walking through the door gave a sound quite unlike anything he expected from a library, looking up he saw a bell over the door, as he was wondering about this oddity, the librarian came out from a door behind the main desk.
“First time you see one eh?” the old man said while feigning resignation, however the look in his eyes said all to clearly that he loved to explain the weird bell that looked mostly at home in a store.

“The concept of a bell over the door isn’t new to me, but the location is, won’t it disturb the readers? It seemed quite loud”
The old librarian was a terrible actor; he tried hiding his smile and did his best to look suitably bored by the whole exchange. The sheer effort he gave to appear nonchalant made Rohan decide to simply humor him and not point out his obviously flawed acting.
“The bell is enchanted” he said sounding almost casual while doing so, but his eagerness betrayed him as he freely continued without further prompting.
“You can only hear it the first time, after that the bell will know that you aren’t an employer and its sound will just curve around you. So you can’t hear it while you read, but I can hear anyone coming in the door from across the building”
Suddenly remembering that he was a librarian and not a magic bell salesperson, he found the tools of his trade in the nearby drawer and took on a more serious face.
“So, what can I do for you?”
“I’d like to get access to the library”
“Sure, just write your name and address in this book”
“Erm, I don’t have an address, not in this city at the very least”
“Ah, you’re an adventurer; recently arrived I’m guessing from the look of your clothes, how silly of me not to notice earlier”
“I did not know that something like that would bar you from the library….”
“That’s because it doesn’t, you may read all you like in here, but you can’t lend any books without a residence. How are we supposed to find you and the books you take out of here if you don’t have home where we can look for you? For all we know you might even go on a little trip across the continent and never return. You people are always so unpredictable”
“Oh, I guess that’s understandable, then I’ll go right in”
“Yeah, enjoy yourself”
4 hours later the first stat message came

Looking up from the book he felt less satisfied then he thought he would.
“I guess even the boost from being an elf can’t keep it from becoming dull, I dread how the training hall will be for Yuri, I think she have severely underestimated the time it takes to do this”
“I think I’ll spend more time looking for good books, if I have to read another travel diary by a bored noble I think I might kill
someone. The public library is obviously the gathering place for all the useless and worthless books, no wonder I’m the only one using it”
Walking between bookcases he eventually stumbles upon a section of the library where the book bindings are either green or blue, a far cry from the prevalent brown that most of the books have.
“Hmm… this could prove interesting, let’s see, the title of this one is, ‘Ancient fairytales of Versailles’…”
‘At least it’s not the work of another whiny noble’
Later in the day, the next messages arrive.

“Hmm? Already? I guess time really flies by when you’re having fun. I should have been more selective with my books at the start, but I’ve spend plenty of time here for now; I need to make a livelihood on the side as well. Can’t really hope that Shin will pay for my food when I run out, not to mention there is still a few days till they can play”
Looking down at the book in his hand, there is only 1 page left.
‘I’ll read the last bit and then it’s out looking for work, can’t stay penniless forever.’
One page later
“Well, that last bit was weird, I wonder if…”
