Chapter 4: Foundations of Power
The air within the fortress felt heavier than before, charged with an unseen energy. Raven stood in the hidden chamber, his fingers wrapped around the Dimensional Core Fragment. It pulsed softly in his hand, a reminder of the countless dimensions that awaited his conquest.
He exhaled slowly, his mind already working through his next steps. I need to establish a foothold. This place will be my foundation, my fortress.
The Shattered Expanse was a land full of ancient ruins, forgotten relics, and untapped potential. If he was going to conquer the dimensions, he needed to start here—by turning these ruins into a base of operations.
Raven tucked the fragment away and made his way back through the labyrinthine corridors of the fortress. The shadows seemed to shift around him, as if the structure itself was alive, watching his every move.
"There’s power here," Raven muttered. "It just needs to be awakened."
His instinct guided him toward the heart of the fortress—a massive hall with high, crumbling ceilings and walls covered in faded murals. The murals depicted battles between celestial beings and shadowy figures, a forgotten war that seemed to transcend time itself.
What happened here? Raven wondered. His eyes traced the murals, trying to piece together the story they told. But there was little time to dwell on the past.
Priorities.
He needed three things: defense, resources, and allies.
Raven's first step was to secure the fortress. He wandered through its depths, searching for anything that could be repurposed for defense. Most of the stone walls were ancient but sturdy, reinforced by the same runes he had seen in the trial chamber.
At one point, he discovered a storage chamber filled with rusted weapons and armor. Most of it was useless—decayed beyond repair—but a few pieces were salvageable. He dragged what he could to the main hall and began organizing them.
"It’s not much," he muttered, examining a jagged sword. "But it’s a start."
Suddenly, his instincts flared. A chill ran down his spine, and he spun around just in time to see movement in the shadows.

Not alone.
His eyes scanned the dimly lit chamber, his senses sharp. A figure emerged from the darkness—a tall, armored being with glowing silver eyes. Its armor was old and battered, but the air around it crackled with power.
It wasn’t human.
"You… are not one of us," the figure said, its voice deep and resonant. "Why do you claim this place?"
Raven’s hand tightened around the jagged sword. "Who are you?"
The figure paused, its eyes narrowing. "I am Khaon, Warden of the Forgotten Citadel. This fortress is sacred ground. Only those deemed worthy may walk these halls."
Raven smirked. "Then it’s a good thing I’ve already passed the First Trial."
Khaon tilted his head, the glowing eyes flaring briefly. "You… possess the mark of the Sovereign." His voice grew softer, almost reverent. "Perhaps fate has brought you here after all."
Interesting. Raven lowered his weapon slightly but remained cautious. "I have no intention of defiling this place. I intend to restore it—and use it as my base."
Khaon studied him for a long moment, then nodded. "If that is your goal, then I shall serve. This place has been empty for too long. It deserves a master once more."

An Unexpected Ally
Khaon turned out to be far more useful than Raven had expected. Not only did he possess knowledge of the fortress’s layout, but he also knew how to activate its defensive wards. Together, they worked to restore parts of the structure, using the remaining energy in the runes to reinforce key areas.
As they worked, Khaon shared fragments of the fortress’s history.
"This place once stood at the heart of the Dimensional War," he explained. "It was a sanctuary for those who fought to protect the balance between worlds. But after the war ended, it was abandoned, left to crumble into ruin."
A sanctuary… or a fortress waiting for someone to claim it again.
Raven listened carefully, absorbing every detail. The more he learned, the more convinced he became that this place was exactly what he needed.
After several hours of work, the main hall began to take shape. The runes on the walls glowed steadily, casting a soft, protective light over the chamber. The salvaged weapons were arranged in neat rows, and the defensive wards were back in place, creating a barrier that would alert them to any intruders.
It wasn’t perfect, but it was progress.

The First Expedition
With the fortress partially secured, Raven turned his attention to the surrounding area. The Shattered Expanse was a dangerous place, teeming with creatures born from the chaos of collapsed dimensions.
"We need supplies," Raven said. "And information about the other factions in this dimension."
Khaon nodded. "There’s a settlement not far from here—ruled by one of the lesser lords. It’s a dangerous place, but if we’re careful, we might find what we need."
Raven’s eyes gleamed with anticipation. "Then we’ll pay them a visit."
Khaon led the way through the winding paths of the Shattered Expanse. The terrain was harsh and unforgiving—jagged cliffs, swirling clouds of energy, and strange, twisted plants that seemed to watch their every move.
As they approached the settlement, Raven’s instincts flared again. Something isn’t right.
He motioned for Khaon to stop. "We’re being watched."
A moment later, the ground exploded in front of them, and a group of armed figures emerged from the shadows. Their leader, a tall man with scarred features, stepped forward, a cruel smile on his face.
"Well, well," the man said. "What do we have here? Fresh meat?"
Raven’s eyes narrowed. "That depends. Are you smart enough to walk away, or do you want to become the first casualty of my rise?"
The man laughed, but it was a nervous sound. Something in Raven’s tone—an edge of absolute certainty—made him hesitate. His gaze flicked to Khaon, who stood silently beside Raven, his silver eyes glowing with barely restrained power.
"You’re bold, stranger," the man said, taking a step back. "But boldness only gets you so far." He mentioned to his men. "Stand down. Let’s hear what he has to say."
After a few Hours later......
Raven smiled coldly. "Wise choice.
"As they moved closer, the sprawling settlement of Hollowshade began to take form before them—a chaotic, haphazard sprawl of makeshift structures and ancient ruins, all jumbled together in a precarious display of survival. 'Hollowshade's a place where the desperate and the dangerous collide,' Khaon murmured, his voice low.
Raven’s gaze hardened. He could already sense the pulse of danger in the air, but that was just the beginning
