Chapter 7: Astraea Academy; Part XII: Shadows of the Forgotten Path

---

The path to the northern mountains was treacherous, winding through dense forests and narrow cliffs that seemed to stretch endlessly. Each step felt heavier than the last, not from fatigue but the weight of what lay ahead. Kaito led the misfits, his expression as stoic as ever, but his mind was a flurry of thoughts.

“We’ve faced demons before,” Yumi said, breaking the silence, “but this feels different. The fragment’s presence… it’s like it’s drawing us into something we can’t understand.”

Kaito glanced at her. “It’s not just the fragment. Everything about this is calculated—the demons’ movements, the summoning circles, even the ambushes. They know we’re coming.”

Elara’s voice wavered as she clutched her staff. “Do you think... they know about us specifically? Or is this just coincidence?”

“Demons don’t believe in coincidences,” Toru muttered, gripping his sword tighter. “They believe in overwhelming force. And we’re walking right into their trap.”

“But we don’t have a choice,” Kaito said firmly, halting the group near a clearing. “If we hesitate now, the academy—and the fragment—are lost.”

The tension among them was palpable, but as the group set up a small camp for the night, their camaraderie began to show. Toru sharpened his sword, Elara used her light magic to create a calming aura, and Yumi prepared a quick meal using provisions they had brought.

“You know,” Rian said, leaning against a tree, “it’s funny. A few weeks ago, none of us even spoke to each other. Now we’re risking our lives together.”

“It’s not funny,” Elara replied with a faint smile. “It’s fate.”

“Fate or not,” Kaito interjected, “we need to rest. Tomorrow will test us like nothing before.”

---

The group took turns keeping watch. Kaito’s shift came last, and as the moon reached its zenith, a faint whisper carried through the wind.

Kaito…

He stood, his eyes scanning the forest. The voice was faint but undeniable.

“Who’s there?”

Kaito… come closer…

Against his better judgment, he followed the voice, stepping into the dense trees. The air grew colder, and the shadows seemed to stretch unnaturally. Finally, he reached a small clearing, where a translucent figure hovered above the ground.

It was a woman, her features ethereal yet sorrowful.

“Who are you?” Kaito asked, his voice steady but cautious.

“I am no one,” she replied, her voice echoing. “But I bring a warning. The fragment’s power is not what you believe it to be. It will test you. It will tempt you. And if you fail… it will destroy you.”

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

“Why should I trust you?”

“Because I was once where you are now,” she said, her form flickering. “And I failed.”

Before Kaito could ask more, the figure vanished, leaving him alone in the dark.

When he returned to camp, Yumi was awake, her concern evident. “You were gone for a while. Something wrong?”

Kaito hesitated before shaking his head. “Just keeping watch.”

By midday, the group reached the foothills of the northern mountains. The air grew thinner, and the terrain more rugged. As they approached a narrow pass, Kaito’s instincts flared.

“Wait,” he said, holding up a hand.

“What is it?” Toru asked, his grip tightening on his sword.

Kaito activated Appraisal, his eyes scanning the pass. “It’s too quiet.”

The group tensed, their eyes darting to every shadow. Suddenly, a guttural roar shattered the silence, and demons poured from the cliffs above.

“Form up!” Kaito shouted, his essence flaring.

Toru charged forward, his sword slicing through the first wave of demons with practiced precision. Yumi cast a barrier to protect Elara, who focused on healing the injured. Rian’s shadows danced around the battlefield, restraining and disarming their enemies.

Kaito faced a hulking demon covered in jagged spikes. The creature lunged, its claws aiming for his throat, but he sidestepped with agility, countering with a blade of wind that sliced deep into its torso.

“These aren’t scouts,” Kaito muttered, his breath ragged. “They’re soldiers.”

“What’s the difference?” Toru asked, barely dodging a strike.

“Scouts observe. Soldiers kill.”

The realization hit the group like a blow. This wasn’t an ambush—it was an extermination.

---

As the battle raged, the demons grew more coordinated, their attacks relentless. Kaito’s essence reserves dwindled, and fatigue set in.

“Kaito!” Yumi called, her voice panicked. “We’re surrounded!”

He turned to see the group backed into a corner, the demons closing in. Desperation surged within him, and for a moment, the fragment’s whispers returned.

Use me…

Without thinking, Kaito reached for the fragment he had taken from the catacombs. Its light flared, and a surge of power coursed through him. His vision blurred, replaced by a swirling void of shadows and starlight.

When he came to, the battlefield was silent. The demons lay scattered, their bodies dissolving into ash. The misfits stared at him, their expressions a mix of awe and fear.

“Kaito…” Yumi began, but she couldn’t find the words.

“I’m fine,” he said quickly, though his trembling hands betrayed him. “Let’s keep moving.”

---

By nightfall, they reached the temple described in Seraphine’s notes. It was a monolithic structure carved into the mountainside, its entrance guarded by two colossal statues of shadowy figures.

“This is it,” Kaito said, his voice barely above a whisper.

The group approached cautiously, the fragment’s energy pulsing stronger with each step. As they entered, the air grew heavy, and an unnatural darkness enveloped them.

Inside, the temple was a labyrinth of twisting corridors and ancient carvings. Symbols resembling the summoning circles adorned the walls, their meanings lost to time.

“This place feels alive,” Elara whispered, her light magic flickering against the oppressive shadows.

“It’s not alive,” Kaito said. “It’s watching us.”

As they ventured deeper, they came upon a massive chamber. At its center was an altar, and atop it rested a crystal identical to the fragment Kaito carried.

“This must be the core,” Yumi said, stepping closer.

Before anyone could react, the chamber rumbled, and a figure emerged from the shadows. It was a demon unlike any they had faced—a towering entity with six wings and eyes that burned with malice.

“You dare trespass in the sanctum of my master?” it roared, its voice shaking the chamber.

---

The demon attacked with blinding speed, its claws tearing through the air. Kaito barely managed to deflect the blow with a barrier of wind, the force sending him sprawling.

“Toru! Keep it distracted!” he shouted, regaining his footing.

Toru charged, his sword glowing with essence, but the demon swatted him aside like a fly. Elara rushed to heal him while Rian and Yumi launched coordinated attacks, their magic barely scratching the creature’s impenetrable hide.

Kaito knew they couldn’t win through brute force. He reached for the fragment again, its power responding instantly. This time, he didn’t resist the whispers.

“Everyone, fall back!” he ordered.

The misfits hesitated but obeyed, retreating to the chamber’s edge. Kaito stepped forward, the fragment’s light engulfing him. The demon lunged, but Kaito’s movements were faster, more precise.

With a single strike, he drove the fragment’s energy into the demon’s core. The creature let out a deafening roar before disintegrating into a cloud of ash.

---

The chamber fell silent, the air heavy with the remnants of the battle. Kaito collapsed to one knee, the fragment slipping from his hand.

Yumi rushed to his side, her expression filled with concern. “Kaito, are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” he said weakly. “But this isn’t over. There’s more to this fragment than we know.”

As the group exited the temple, the first rays of dawn broke over the mountains. Despite their victory, a sense of unease lingered.

Kaito gazed at the horizon, his resolve hardening. “This is just the beginning,” he muttered.

The misfits exchanged determined looks, ready to face whatever came next.
