Souls of Snow and Tar
Prologue
Graduation
It was a warm May evening and many families were gathered around to watch a high school graduation ceremony. A couple hundred students sat in gowns ready to graduate from KingsRock High School, and get on with their lives. The school staff and student leadership gave their usual speeches, and then they called up students one by one.
There were many names called, with varying levels of cheering and applause from the audience and fellow students. As some students walked forth, the entire building erupted in applause, such was the case for Abigail Peterson and Maren Wallenstein, two of the most prominent and attractive students at the ceremony. Abigail had black and dyed blonde hair and glittery blue eyes that made it look like she had no care in the world. She seemed to be more than what she let on, yet always had an artificial smile on her face. Maren had nice straight brown hair and very pretty blue eyes, leaving a look of mystery, yet still managing to make people desire to be around her. Being around her for a little while could make you wonder who she really was, yet at the same time think that she wasn’t hiding much of her own self from anyone.
However, applause, praise and cheering were absent for the announcing of one Wilhelm Königsmarck. Wilhelm was one of those kids who was average looking, intelligent, shy, very religious and a little strange. His dark brown hair was nothing special and his peculiar hazel eyes looked as though he was gazing into an empty void yet staring directly into the darkest reaches of your soul at the same time.

Graduation meant moving on for everyone. People split off and went their separate ways, some moving off to study in other countries, others just leaving their parents house. As for Abigail, Maren and Wilhelm, those three decided to stay in town, becoming friends with people at college or working and rarely being seen interacting with people. Such is life after childhood ends. People split up, some bond together, others fade away into the faintest essence of a memory.
Abigail and Maren went off to college and became even more popular. Wilhelm faded into obscurity and seemed to be almost forgotten, only remembered by Maren because they ended up becoming neighbors after moving out. Abigail and Maren became increasingly friendly to each other and enjoyed the partying together when they went off to college.
Wilhelm, however, started working instead of “Wasting time and money on college when I don’t know what to study.” Without school, he seemingly disappeared from the public eye. He seemed annoyed whenever Maren threw parties and completely disappeared from Abigail’s mind, which he did not care for. It seemed as though Maren always had a reason to celebrate, passing a test, every single government holiday, every friends birthday, it seemed as though parties happened every week or two.
During this time, Maren and Wilhelm both kept their separate journals of their experiences, with stark contrast between their general interests and writing styles. It was so interesting that two people who were almost polar opposites could be neighbors and not go to war, at least not yet or against each other. Both seemed unchangeable, but who would know for sure. After all, tar does not come out on its own, nor does snow change color by itself. Deep down, They both felt like they were only half of something, feeling another piece of them was close, but not within a reachable distance.
