Chapter 9 - Honey

Chapter 9 - Honey

After registering, Darren received a QR code that linked to his dungeon explorer profile.

With that he had what he needed, and on the next day he met up with Charlie and Shana at the dungeon, with his make-shift armor and his machete.

“By the way, you guys look like total losers with that gear.” Shana says heartlessly. “You're going to scare my sister away at this rate.” She says with a shake of her head.

“I think that it's very innovative.” Shana's sister says with a friendly smile. “I'm Rose. Nice to meet you.” She says with a slight wave of her hand.

A smile blooms on Charlie’s face. “Yes, I suppose it is pretty innovative.” He says with a chuckle and a rising blush to his cheeks. “My name is Charlie. And this is Darren. You can ignore him; he’s a little dense. More muscles than brains. Speaking of brains, I’ve recently been accepted to the Carleton Institute of Technology. What college do you go to? Or how old are you? Not to say that you look old. You look quite young. Young and p-p-pretty.” He says, words streaming out and unable to stop.

Shana lets out a laugh. “Easy there, little brother. She’s not going anywhere. You’ll have time to be weird later. For now, let’s get in line.” She says before walking away as an amused laughter escapes her mouth.

Darren faithfully follows like a chick trailing after a mother hen.

Charlie’s stands transfixed by Rose’s beauty.

Rose continues to smile in a friendly manner. “Let’s go?” She says with a slight tilt of her head, before walking off.

Charlie lets out a chuckle, unaware of his awkwardness as he follows after Rose’s graceful figure.

There was a booth setup in front of the dungeon and a variety of people, dressed up in all sorts of ways, had lined up before it, waiting for their turn to enter.

The announcement for the dungeon explorer registration had caught the interest of gamers from all over the world. Like flies drawn to honey, they registered with that boundless dream of standing on top of the world, skillfully spec’ing out their characters, and eventually reaching the max level, where they’ll be defenders of the earth, protecting the innocent as they fight off the monsters and evil creatures who threatened their ideal life.

With this mass-produced dream, they stood in line, waiting for their adventure to begin.

Eventually, Darren and the others had arrived at the front of the line. They all had their QR codes scanned and logged into their system.

“Before registering as dungeon explorers you should have read the disclaimer. We aren’t responsible for any bodily harm or death that may occur in the dungeon. You are entering at your own risk. If you require medical insurance, there is a separate booth over there; the brokers will gladly assist you with finding the appropriate insurance plan. There is also a medical team waiting here and at the entrance of the dungeon if required. Cell phones don’t work inside, but radio frequencies still seem to work, so they will provide you with walkie-talkies when you enter the dungeon. If you had any questions, please visit our website’s F.A.Q., which is linked to your dungeon explorer profile.” The government employee says with practiced words.

“Also, did you guys need a corpse carrier? The government is currently paying for the corpses of the monsters for research purposes. A corpse carrier will cost 10% of the payment. Carrying them out takes a decent amount of effort and if we don’t do it quickly enough they dissolve back into the dungeon.” She explains, causing a light to shine in Shana’s eyes.

“Yes, yes. We’ll require a corpse carrier.” Shana says with a smile. She smelled money and she very much didn’t want to pass up on the opportunity. If we make enough, I might be able to quit my job! She thinks with excitement as she looks forward to a future career as a dungeon explorer.

“Okay. Just go inside and one will be assigned to you.” The government worker says before gesturing them to walk down.

Shana smiles and leads the way to the newly-built stairs. Now that money had been added to the strength that could be gained, she was more determined than ever.
