Chapter 2 - Feats and Skills

Leo's eyes were greeted with a stratified rundown of his current condition. It began with an overview of his species as well as his own name and age. Next came basic information on his Physical and Mental attributes and his unspent points.

The panel was pretty simple to understand, he scanned through the list and stopped at his attributes. The list was simple and one could easily infer what kind of effect each attribute had. Strength was strength, and endurance was endurance, there was no need to think about them. Vigor was probably the stat that governed his health and agility likely represented his speed.

Past physical attributes were mental ones and they consisted of mind, intelligence, and perception. Wondering how exactly did mind differ from intelligence, Leo mentally focused on the stat.

Insufficient stat points.

His eyes wandered down, and truly, his free stat points were currently at zero.

'So you won't tell me the difference?'

The system kept silent.

'Alright, I'll find it out eventually myself.' Leo sighed in disappointment.

Just under the Stat Points counter was another one titled Feat Points. And it read five.

'Five Feat Points... I got five feats, does each feat grant me one?'

He mentally clicked on the counter and the screen changed.

'So the five points I have can be used to level up feats?'

Leo pondered for a moment. A slight look of hesitation surfaced on his face, but then he took a deep breath and mentally tapped the Insight feat.

Insight Lv.0 >>> Lv.Max

Congratulations, you advanced the feat to it's maximum level.

[Identify] skill gained.

[Identify] Lv.1

Passive.

Allows user to gain information about objects or creatures.

Effectivness influenced by skill level and INT,PER stats.

The reasoning behind his choice was simple. No matter what, it was the safest bet since a skill like this will be incredibly useful in the both short and long term.

He scanned the list once again and thought for a bit before dumping the rest of the points into the First Delver feat. It nets him four free stat points and a nice +1 to all stats, as well as the [Light] skill. Satisfied by the efficient spending of his feat points he turned back to the stat screen.

His health increased by five points, his mana by six and his stamina by six. Judging by that one vigor point net him five health, one endurance gave six stamina, and while he wasn't sure which stat exactly governed his mana pool it still gave him six points.

'I still have 4 unassigned stat points left.'

Leo closed his eyes and concentrated on his attributes to see what else he could improve upon. He had several options. First, he could use these points to test how exactly mind and intelligence differed, second he could just dump it all into vigor and/or endurance since these stats directly affected his ability to stay alive. Finally, he could put everything into strength and hope it will be enough to smash whatever monster he would encounter next.

'Will I get more of these points though?'

He thought for a moment. It was a valid concern since by the logic of things, he was supposed to get a class in the tutorial first and then he would presumably be able to level up. But he was stuck in the dungeon and needed to kill the boss first to exit. Only then he would be able to enter the tutorial and gain a class.

'Maybe I can level up without a set class?'

It was the best-case scenario for him. If he could still level up without a class then he could just grind until he was strong enough to face the boss and leave. It was his first priority. He figured out that since his life would involve fighting monsters now, he might as well stop shaking in his boots and try it first. He got [Identify] and could find which mushrooms are edible, but how long could they sustain him? Should he wait until he was weak from hunger for some giant rat or oversized spider to eat him for dinner? No, he must act now.

But what if he can't level up?

Then his best bet would be to try to get more feats. Each feat seemed to give him one point so if he could gain more feats he could gain more stats. Though it wasn't as appealing as the first scenario since he would have a lot of feats and almost no points to advance them. Still, it was better than nothing.

'Hmm, mages are always stronger when it comes to dealing damage, but I have zero offensive spells.' Leo mused. He considered his options and chose to put two points into vigor, one point into endurance, and one into strength. Since he might need to fight for his life, he must be as ready as he could be.

Just before he switched to the newly appeared "Skills" tab he noticed that the Feat Points counter was now showing two points available for some reason.

Just as he wanted to check it out, he heard some noise. It sounded like something was being dragged over the stone floor. Leo stood still and listened intently but didn't hear anything else except for the sound of his own heartbeat in his ears. He strained his hearing but nothing came back to him besides the pounding in his chest. He scanned the thick ferns slowly until he spotted a lazy-looking reptile the size of a dog looking at him from within the vegetation.

[Lesser Monitor Lizard] Lv.26

The lizard was just standing there like a piece of furniture, staring right at him with its yellow eyes as if thinking about something. When Leo looked into its eyes, it felt like his entire being was constricted and he couldn't move. Cold sweat instantly covered his forehead. It was the most frightening feeling Leo had ever experienced. At that moment in the entire universe, only a predator and prey existed. And the predator wasn't him.

The lizard's gaze lingered upon him for a moment, and then it lazily moved past Leo to a rock roughly one meter in diameter located under the big glowing mushroom. The slovenly lizard lay on top of the rock and closed its eyes.

Leo used this opportunity to inspect it more closely. He noted that the monitor lizard had three legs per side and a tail longer than its body length. Its scales were dull green and its head resembled that of a dinosaur with huge eyes and sharp teeth. Its neck was long and muscular while its belly had a thin layer of fat which made it look less threatening. The creature looked at Leo again before opening its jaws wide to yawn, revealing rows and rows of pointed teeth.

Thankfully for Leo, the lizard was far more interested in taking a nap than eating him, so he began to slowly move further away from it. Quietly, he managed to crawl away far enough before he got a sudden notification.

Sneak Lv.1 obtained.

One Feat Point awarded.
