Chapter 2: - The Change

Today was shit, I woke up after sleeping in and decided to make stick bread for breakfast to celebrate my first morning on the mountain, but I couldn’t find a flat enough stone to knead it on so I had to eat some more dry food.

When I got to the stream to start cleaning my teeth is where the day got worse it started pouring down from nowhere(I swear there were no clouds like five minutes ago). I had to rush back and put my clothes back in the tent so they didn’t get wet.

Well this sucks, I thought it was supposed to be a sunny week. I thought as I lay in the tent on top of my sleeping bag. Guess I’ll just read a book while I wait the storm out…

----------------------------------------

The rest of the day passed much the same, with me stuck in the tent reading ‘A guide to the Arlean language’, it was pretty interesting all things considered. Though trying to memorize all the 252 letters in their alphabet as well as their meanings did take a lot of time.

I was reading through the section on the letter Ve when I heard the rain stop, finally! I stood up and exited the tent. I had spent nearly four hours reading and as interesting as reading about a thousand year old language was, it did get really boring. I wish I had brought another book…

As soon as I was out of the tent I was hit with the smell freshly fallen rain mixed with a summer breeze bringing along the wonderful scent of blood… Wait a minute, I turn towards the south following the scent, and across the stream I see a small gathering of deer, except all the deer are the color of blood…

Okay…what?

I continue watching them as they go near the water, take a drink, and then start heading up over the mountain…That was… okay WHAT, blood smelling red deer? Since when was that a thing! While I think about the deer I notice that some off the moss around the tent has also changed. Four hours ago this was a dark green patch of moss, now half of it is Grey and the other half seems to have almost doubled in mass.

I continue looking and I see that nearly everything has changed to some extent, the valley that used to be filled with green pine trees and snow caped mountains now features blue LEAFED trees(wasn’t this a pine forest?) together with pine trees that instead of being solely green are now also sported colors such as orange and white.

And even the mountains have changed, though it is less noticeable up close, I can clearly see how some spots that sued to be grayish/blackish spears more grayish/whitish…

“What in the…”

I fell to the ground as I took in the view in front of me.

“This… This…What?”

I was shocked, but after freaking out about the view for a minute I started calming down. I had never been one to panic(even if I probably should at this point), and I started to think. Did it happen during the storm? But how, or even why did it happen? Almost everything is different, the trees, the moss, the animals…have I changed?

I quickly look over myself and felt for anything different, okay I think I am a bit taller and my skin seems to still be white…though my hair isn’t purely blond anymore and has a few reddish streaks in it. I scramble over over to a nearby puddle leftover from the rain to see my face and…phew, I was mostly the same. well except for my pupils that seemed a bit more like a cats, and my ears that looked like they belonged on a elf. But at least I can recognize myself.

Looking closer at my ears they were maybe a little longer than my middle finger and that tapered off into a point.

So, does this mean I’m an elf?

I was thinking about the implications when I heard the wind rustling, or more like felt it with my ears. Guess they are pretty sensitive then. I thought as I pulled my hood over my head, I get a feeling that this trip might not be so peaceful.

“Shit!”
