It was the eve of the seventh month in the Yyvel Calendar, Year 678. Like every other month, once a night of the full moon rose to the occasion, townships worldwide would congregate at their centers to perform Class Awakening Rituals for those in their population who were of age.
Ever since the calamity descended onto the world more than a thousand years ago, humanity had been in a state of endless turmoil. The paradigm of society had shifted to accommodate the supernatural and even to this day, humans had yet to reclaim their spot on the top of the food chain.
What with their world's landscape changing into something completely unrecognizable, with previous technologies left unusable, and foreign constructs and monsters freely roaming, it was a miracle to some that the human race was yet to be extinct.
The population had taken a horrific dip, plummeting to a fraction of a percent of its peak, and that was only on day one after the apocalypse. Had the humans with the greatest potential not spontaneously evolved and manifested their Classes, they very easily would have been completely wiped out in days.
Those pioneers from the primeval era of chaos had paved the way for the rest of humanity. They came together to rebuild civilization and form the organization that would ensure progress continued long after they died; the Setting Stars.

"Status," a wizened old man said as he stood in front of a young man who couldn't have been older than fifteen. "Three Clover Apothecary, standard for the Alchemy Guild."
The old man moved down the line of youngsters to face a girl as the fifteen-year-old who had received his verdict smiled and sighed softly. "Status… Moonshot Archer? Hmm," the old man gave the girl an odd look before he shrugged and continued down the line.
"Status, Secondary Cultivator..."
"Status, Botanical Pill Concocter..."
"Status, Lunar Sword Maker..."
"Status, Undying Soldier..."

Silently, Miles waited for the sagely old man to move on and continue with the ritual for the peer that stood to his right before he withdrew from his spot and went home. Walking slowly, he tried to make sense of everything that had just happened, but even after arriving at his home, he found it all so hard to digest.
Taking a deep breath, Miles looked through the window of the basement where he lived. As the scattered red, blue, and violet moonlight of the world's three lunar satellites made it clear how late it was, Miles decided to turn in for the night.
He figured, 'I guess it doesn't really matter what all this nonsense is, does it? Hero of Fate, Protagonist, the Fate Dissociation System… Maybe if these things help me get out of this shithole and live a better life, I'll worry about it.'
He sighed and lied on the ground before closing his eyes and drifting off to sleep.
