Chapter 1: Anomalies

Chapter 1: Anomalies

So I’m a child now. Toddler actually. I was born just 3 years ago. Actually, I was born 18 years before that, but I died in the middle of winter, walking home from the convenience store.

Dying was pretty painful, of course. I was beaten up by a couple of thugs, and stabbed to death. One of them was some guy who I got into a few fights with in my freshman year. He got sent away after I lured him into beating me up in front of the school cameras, and he came back to settle the score.

They probably wouldn’t have killed me if I just let them hit me without resisting, but I went and bashed one of their faces in, and wouldn’t let go of another while biting down on their neck.

Oh well, past is past.

None of that matters anymore. I’m long dead, and now in a fantasy world! I wouldn’t be able to get my revenge in the next life, even if I wanted to.

I mean, I have plenty of things I regret from my old life, that I wish I could rectify. I never finished High-school. Didn't say goodbye to family and loved ones. I never got a serious girlfriend. Never got a real job. Never tried to get a car or even a driver's license.

Simple things like that.

Still, I've decided to just enjoy my current life for now.

There are however two abnormalities.

The first. When I was first born, I saw a blue screen.

???????????????????????????????????

At the time, I had no idea what it said, as it was written in a language I didn’t understand. But that’s not the point. I saw it, and it was translucent, and in front of me. I don’t remember what the characters were, but I know for sure that it was there. It faded away seconds later though, and I mostly just remember a nurse checking to make sure I was alright. I think it was a nurse. Oh, she had elf ears too.

They didn’t seem to speak english, I knew that much. Especially not the people who seemed to be my parents. Ah, by the way, my mother seems to be an elf, and my father a human. I’m being raised off in the middle of no-where.

I spent the next 3 years learning the language, and getting my body up to a favorable condition to move about. Amazingly, my mind was able to suck up the language very easily. Actually it only took me a year. Were babies in this world just naturally smart? Or was it also because it was me?

In those 3 years, I only saw my supposed father around my birthdays, or special holidays. My mother often switched between using “Human Tongue,” and “Elven Tongue”, so I ended up learning both. I also learned that the name they gave me was “Aishean”.

Well, either way, the second abnormality happened on my 3rd birthday, after the birthday celebration. Another series of screens appeared in front of me.

You are now 3 years old!

Notification Windows will now be visible to you.

The Status Window is now available to you.

The windows weren’t in English. They were in the elven alphabet I had learned in this world. The oddest thing was, I only started learning to read, but I still understood them perfectly. It seems these notifications don’t need me to know how to read to understand them; I just need to know the language. When I see actual writing I don’t really understand it, but the notifications were different.

For some reason the notification when I was born wasn’t understandable.

And I wondered why the writing was in Elven specifically? Is it because I’m more knowledgeable in Elven than I am in Human? On top of that, I’m certain that there’s more than one Elven and Human language—but I shouldn’t concern myself with that now.

Well, after that, my mother explained to me the notifications.

It seems this is a very game-like world. The residents receive special notifications, which they call the Windows of the Gods. Specifically, they believe that the Primordial god Status is the one who created, and gifted these windows to all creatures of the world.

Being that an infant can’t understand these windows, they’re restricted until we turn 3 years of age.

Oh, and I realized immediately that that god’s name was “Status” in English. Not in Human or Elven, which are both drastically different.

That’s around the time I began to be suspicious of everything. Was it just a coincidence?

Well, in either case, my stats were pretty interesting.

Yep. Just like a video game. Oh, Aseal is my mother, and Kradeal is my father. It seems my stats are pretty weird. Seems that, because my mind carried over from another world, my intelligence and wisdom is absurdly high for my level and age. I neglected to show my mother these stats of course.

It seems my name “Aishean”, is based on my title, “Aien’s Gift”. Or the elven text: “Aien shes anna”. That’s how my mother explained it.

When I look at the title description it explains in detail:

Aien’s GiftYour parents are of two incompatible races. The elven fertility goddess looked past these differences, and gifted the two a child, despite the nearly impossible odds.

* Human and Elven Racial Traits are averaged

* The masses of both Human and Elves will look down on you as a Mongrel, and Fame among these races will be halved. (Excludes those who follow a fertility god.)

* Holy Magic is +10% Effective, if user is a Follower of Aien.

* +10% conception rate with Humans and Elves, or +20% for each partner who is a Follower of Aien. (40% max)

* +5% conception rate with other races, or +10% for each partner who is a Follower of Aien. (20% max)

Eh? So this world measures the chance of pregnancy between different races? I found that pretty comical actually.

It seems those who follow fertility gods are more likely to have children, huh? Though, I imagine that there are benefits with following other gods too, and following multiple gods probably causes issues of being unfaithful.

That’s what I assume anyways.

But Holy Magic, huh? I’ll look into this Aien goddess later.

And now that I think of it, me and my mother live in a small little house in the middle of the woods. It seems most people look down on mixed breeds in this world. It’s probably a “humans hate elves, and elves hate humans” sort of thing.

Does that put me at the center of a Romeo and Juliet type of story?

But the Romeo here is always away somewhere. Does he have some kind of responsibility?

Well, a few weeks after my birthday, I decided to ask my mother while she was getting a salad ready.

“Mama.. Why is dad almost never home?”

She was visibly surprised by my question, and sighed. She ended up picking me up, and then seating me down on a chair. “Well, Aishean… As you know, me and daddy aren’t the same race,”

I nod at this, and decide to throw in a childish remark, “You have pointy ears like me,”

“Right, but mine are a bit longer, and yours are less sturdy and tend to droop more,” She said.

Right, my mother was an elf, with long pointed ears, about 10 centimeters long, and are rather stiff, and able to move and rotate a bit at her will—less like Tolkien elves, and more like those I’ve seen in Japanese media like anime. It gives her better hearing than a human, and allows her to determine the source of a sound better than a human. My own ears are pretty long as well, at about 6 centimeters (I think), but they’re not as stiff, and when I’m not conscious of them, they tend to droop downwards, and even when I move them, they seem to be affected by gravity more, and curve downwards. If I had to guess, I’d say I have less cartilage in my ears than a pure-blood elf.

—Any human who sees me will know I have elf blood in me, and any elf who sees me will know I have human blood in me. My brown eyes I got from my father are common among both races, but the white hair I inherited from my mother is almost non-existant among humans.

“Well, most human and elves hate each other. And they hate half-bloods more than purebloods, most of the time. There are some exceptions, like mommy and daddy, which is why we’re together, but…” She paused, and looked out the window. “Daddy has some responsibilities elsewhere,”

I knew that much.

It seemed my frown said as much, and she could only smile wearily. “Well, you see, your dad’s a very important person to the humans. If they found out that he loved an elf, things would be bad. If they found out he had a child with that elf… Things would be worst.”

“B-but.. I’m a gift from a goddess, right?”

“Aishean, not all people follow the gods. Especially not the gods of other races, or even some among their own race. Sectos and Malios, two human gods who each represent Power and Strength are opposed to each other, and followers of each gods are often in conflict with one another, even if they’re both Human gods. They care even less about those who follow gods of other races.”

And that’s how that conversation went, before she put a stop to it.

“Anyways, Aishean, can you get 2 tomatoes from the garden for me, and slice them for me?”
