Ch 1: The Advisor and the Blacksmith.

It had been a very long day for the poor adivisor Lerem. Multiple issues had come up one after the other relentlessly, causing major headaches for the man standing behind and to the right of the king. He dragged his feet through the halls, an aura of exhaustion causing all to keep a distance from the deeply tired man. He navigated his way through the castle based on habit, to the main courtyard, where loud bangs of metal could be heard through the humid night air.

A warm light could be seen glowing from inside the building where the rhythmic sounds were being made. A woman could be seen standing at a forge through an open doorway, hammering away at a piece of metal, the light of the fire nearby illuminating her features. Her curly chestnut hair was tied up behind her head, reavealing a fair amount freckles that were sprinkled across her face, an expression of stubborn determination and deep eyes that sparkled in the firelight.

Lerem made his way to the doorway, leaning against it as he stood, watching the woman at her work. He yawned and continued looking, contently watching as she wiped some of the sweat off her brow that came from the heat of the furnace. The woman sighed after a minute and looked up to see the man watching her. Her mouth quirked a bit at the sides at the sight of him and said softly,"Alright alright let me put this away and then we can go."

She grabbed her hammer and lifted the piece of metal while placing both on a table not far from where she stood, which was full of half made swords, mangled arrowheads and a punctured metal bucket. She then strolled over to Lerem, who was looking at her with smile, even through his tired demeanor. He put a hand on her waist as they walked out together into the night air.

As they went through the sprawling halls of the castle, you could hear light conversation about each other’s day. Lerem’s voice could be heard, slightly complaining about the events and problems of the day while the woman, who he called Glory, gave commentary and a small recount of the things that happened that day and what she made, which Lerem then promptly asked about. This continued as they winded through the castle, stopping at the kitchens for a late supper and then continuing in their walk, they began to quiet down as they walked together, finding happiness in just being with the other.

As the walked through a side courtyard towards their room, Glory stopped under a tree and looked up at the moon peeking through the clouds, which set everything underneath in a pale white glow. Lerem turned to look at her and asked, “What’s wrong dear?”

“Well,” She started as she looked back at him. “I think I have something to tell you.”

Something in her gaze made him realize that whatever the thing was that she had to tell him, it was extremely important. “You know I’m all ears.”

She paused and then announced to him in a slightly trembling voice, “I think I might be pregnant Lerem.”

A heavy silence fell upon the couple as the statement registered. Glory placed her hands on her stomach as she awaited the reaction of her husband. That husband was stood in front of her, the expression on his face hard to describe. It was somewhere between utter surprise, confusion and a joyful if dumbfounded look.

He lurched a couple steps forward to pull her into his chest and whispered, as if uncertain that the news was true. “You’re pregnant? After all this time, our prayers have been answered?”

She nodded. As Lerem finally realized the news he’d been given, he hugged her tight and swirled her around in the air. As he put her down, he put his forehead to hers and whispered.

“Thank you.”
