Prologue

Long time ago when there was nothingness, a lion created the skies and the earth. It had a silver regal mane which resembled the moon and the stars. On the seventh day, the lion breathed air into the soil and created humans.

The lion and humans lived in harmony for centuries. They lived in the garden of Eden, where sweet fruits sprouted from trees and crystal clear water flowed generously across the stream. Humans dubbed their lion as ‘Dawn’, for it has a pair of fierce topaz eyes like the shining sun. Dawn allowed anyone to eat and do anything in its garden as long as they didn’t eat the golden apple hanging on the tallest tree in the garden.

Unfortunately, peace ended when a little girl ate the golden apple and shared it with her friend by accident. Since the apple was unplucked from the tree, humans grew greedy. They grew bored living in Eden and longed to see more life beyond the serene garden. They started digging and destroying the garden Dawn loved to find treasures that promised them of riches. Heartbroken, the lion fell into deep slumber, taking the sun with it and plunging the world into eternal darkness.

With the sunlight absent, the rich garden of Eden quickly fell into despair. Trees stopped growing fruits and the lands dried up, unable to produce bounty. People were dying and starving. They tried waking up Dawn and begging for its mercy, but their cries fell on deaf ears.

One day, the two children who ate the golden apple fell ill. Adan and Eveline were the children of poor farmers, both of whom had passed away due to starvation. The children were writhing and dying until they coughed out something that would change the world forever.

Adan coughed out four divine stones which granted humans the ability to control the four elements – fire, water, power, earth. Next to him, Eveline coughed out light. She eventually gained control of her powers and created the ‘sun’ that replaced the world’s missing source of light.

With the power to wield magic and light’s return, humanity celebrated their newfound hope. They harnessed their new powers to create new civilizations and kingdoms that pressed them to be more greedy and power hungry. Adan and Eveline became the representatives of the two largest kingdoms in Eden: Nethermoon, the kingdom of dark and elemental magic, and Solarmane, the kingdom of the sun. The two kingdoms, while different in nature, lived amicably for centuries to come until the greed in their hearts wormed its way back and destroyed everything they had built up.

Soon later, the world will be swallowed by eternal darkness once more. Promises broken, families torn apart and loving vows replaced by pride, vengeance and unfulfilled desires. Despite all the odds stacked against hope, would light return to the world once more?

One hundred years later in the heart of the Nethermoon castle, a dark haired boy stood in the throne room. Storm and torrent brewed violently outside his home, reflecting the turbulence and despair weighing on his chest. With a broken sword and a broken heart, he pointed the jagged ends to his blade to the woman sitting on his throne.

“Tell me.” his voice was shaking along with the blade. “Was everything we had…meant nothing to you?”

The woman on the throne looked at him with a tired gaze, yet something painful glowed beneath her eyes. Her voice was cold, deliberate. “I only did what I had to – for my kingdom and my people. For this world.”

The dark-haired boy winced at her words, his grip tightening on the sword as if it were the only thing keeping him steady. He took a sharp, trembling breath before speaking. “I hate you. I wish you’d stayed dead. Losing you was easier than seeing what you’ve become.”

She remained silent. Her face betrayed no emotion, but her eyes darkened at his words. Slowly, she rose from her seat. Her movements were graceful but determined. She drew a silver sword and pointed it towards the boy. “How I wished that was the case. Then, I guess you have to carry me to sweet death yourself, Riven Nethermoon.”

With that, they lunged, their blades clashing with a resounding force. Each strike was a testament to years of pain and broken promises that had brought them to this moment. Their eyes locked, intense and unwavering, reflecting the despair they shared and the broken vows consumed by the eternal night.
