Forsaken Duty

Forsaken Duty

The moment he entered the warehouse, he was hit by a wave of heat and ash. The air, thick with the smell of burning wood and metal, made breathing difficult.

Before him lay his B-rank recruits, now scattered across the ground, a testament to their failure.

Frustrated and upset, he clenched his jaw and let out a sharp a sound.

"Tch."

The pyro anomaly stood atop a pile of mangled metal, unleashing flames around him.

"Think you B-ranks can stop me? Don't make me laugh," he scoffed.

he glanced at the plastic bag in his hand with disdain. He pulled out a soda can, emptied it in seconds, and then, with a subtle squeeze of his hand, compressed it completely.

His gaze hardened as he surveyed the scene around him.

"What a joke. This is the fourth time this week that bastard Hiroto dumped useless B-ranks on me," he thought.

As he approached the center of the warehouse, a wounded B-rank recruit dragged himself across the floor, leaving a trail of blood.

His voice quivered with confusion and pain, "Why... why did you abandon us?"

The recruit's eyes then caught sight of the plastic bag he had dropped on the floor, and his expression turned to one of disbelief.

"You left us to get a drink Kaze?!"

Kaze looked down with anger in his eyes, even as the recruit's trembling hands grabbed at his boots.

"You're telling me five of you got taken down by a mere B-rank threat?!"

The recruit's eyes widened in fear. "I don't know what happened, but this guy... he... he must have been an A-rank or maybe even S-rank. His powers..." His voice trailed off as he coughed up blood and put his hand on his mouth.

Kaze glared, his frustration clear as the fire blazed around them. The building creaked loudly, and metal beams crashed down. The recruit flinched, his eyes wide with fear. "Kaze, what do we do? This place is falling apart!"

Kaze turned around to see the pyro anomaly and grinned. With a gesture, he used his gravity powers or as people call it his 'anolity' to lift the fallen recruits and moved them gently against the walls. "Take them and get out," he ordered.

"Let me help you!" the recruit begged, trying to stand.

Kaze cut him off sharply, "Leave now!"

The recruit hesitated, then moved away with the rest of the bodies. Still, curiosity pulled him back. He had to witness the might of an S-rank enforcer from the Eclipse Agency.

The pyro anomaly spun around, surprised. "Kaze Jūryoku?! Think you've got what it takes to take me on?"

Flames danced wildly around him. "I know all about your anolity—「Gravity Rift 」but it won't save you. I'll burn you to a crisp!"

"You knocked out my recruits, huh? Looks like I need to give you a taste of your own medicine," Kaze said, stepping forward as his boots crunched over the burnt concrete.

The anomaly threw a massive fireball, causing the remnants of the roof to collapse. "It's over for you, Kaze!" he yelled.

As the fire surged towards him, Kaze calmly extended his right hand and whispered

「Vortex.」

The fireball spiraled into a black hole and disappeared.

A recruit, watching in disbelief, muttered, "I can't believe it... Kaze really did it."

Kaze sighed, almost bored. "Let's end this game."

The pyro anomaly felt a cold sweat break out. "Crap," he muttered, his voice laced with a mix of fear and awe. "He can actually do that..."

Kaze's eyes narrowed as he got serious. "You have ten seconds to run for your life. this is your last chance," Kaze said coldly. As he spoke, he began counting under his breath, each number dropping like a stone.

The pyro anomaly, propelled by its swift mechanical legs, leaped into the air, desperate to evade capture.

Panic crept into his thoughts as he fled. "He just absorbed my strongest attack with that vortex technique of his... there's no way I can beat this monster. I knew Kaze was tough, but this? I'm out of my league here. My only chance now is to run—run and hope I can escape before he decides to end this," he thought, his fear intensifying.

By the time Kaze reached the final count, the air around him was tense.

"Zero."

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Kaze stretched out both of his hands, and the air around him distorted, the power of his 「Gravity Rift 」anolity visibly contorting the metal structure of the warehouse.

His laughter echoed wildly, a manic sound that spilled out into the streets, drawing the attention of police officers who quickly converged on the scene.

Inside the warehouse, the B-rank recruit watched in disbelief as the warehouse twisted and buckled under Kaze's power. As the police entered, guns drawn and aimed at the still laughing Kaze, the tension escalated.

The police chief shouted over the chaos, "Stop this at once, Kaze Jūryoku! You're causing more harm than good. If you don't cease immediately, we will open fire!"

The B-rank recruit stepped in front of the officers, his hands raised in a plea. "Don't shoot! He saved my life," the B-rank recruit said.

The officers exchanged wary glances, their confusion evident. But before they could respond, they heard Kaze shout.

「Graviton Surge」

A powerful blast of pure gravity knocked the pyro anomaly out of the sky, sending it crashing to the ground with a heavy thud. Fortunately, he survived.

The pyro anomaly screamed in pain as he crashed next to the police officers who were stunned at Kaze's display of power.

That night would be forever remembered as a vivid demonstration of the formidable might wielded by Kaze Jūryoku, the S-rank enforcer.

Kaze walked to the door of the Eclipse Agency, hands in his pockets.

Using his 「Gravity Rift 」 Anolity, he made the unconscious pyro anomaly hover beside him.

As he entered, he tossed the pyro anomaly to the side and said, "Someone take care of this," before continuing forward.

People stepped aside as he walked, their eyes wide with awe and fear, a clear sign of his formidable reputation.

Rin Asakura S-rank enforcer dashed towards him with her arms open, ready for a hug, but she stopped short like she'd hit a glass door. Kaze, without changing his stoic face, had used his 「Gravity Rift 」 anolity to keep her away.

"Why are you doing this?" Rin asked, her voice full of frustration.

"Enough!"

"But I love you, Kazu! Why won't you let me hug you?"

Kaze just clicked his tongue, annoyed but unruffled. 'Kazu—he hated that nickname. Rin had tagged him with it, and no matter how much he disliked it, he never bothered to correct her. Not that it would make a difference; she was too stubborn.'

Rin's laughter echoed through the room, unsettling and sharp. "If I can't have you, then nobody can!" she declared, her tone manic as she braced herself to attack.

Electricity crackled around Rin as she advanced on Kaze, her movements erratic. Suddenly, she threw a bolt of lightning his way. Before it could strike, Daichi Fujimoto stepped in. He waved his hand, opening a portal that swallowed the lightning bolt and redirected it away from Kaze, effectively blocking her assault.

"Control yourself, Rin," Daichi admonished calmly.

Among the enforcers, two lower-ranked female agents, Nana and Mina, were trying hard not to laugh as they watched everything unfold.

"Check her out, thinking she can actually grab Kaze's attention," whispered the C-ranked agent Nana.

"Right? Even as an S rank enforcer, she's definitely the most deluded," the D rank agent Mina agreed with a chuckle, both shaking their heads in amusement..

Rin's ears caught the quiet insults, and her eyes narrowed, her demeanor instantly turning fierce. "Making fun of me, huh?" she snapped, her voice icy and threatening.

Suddenly, she unleashed a storm of lightning, crackling fiercely around her as she moved toward the agents who had mocked her, her presence brimming with unchecked power.

In the spacious hall, enforcers darted away, sensing the imminent storm that was Rin Asakura.

With a menacing smile plastered on her face, Rin made a beeline towards two specific enforcers, agents Nana and Mina, who had been casually exchanging jokes about her moments earlier.

The amusement on their faces had vanished, replaced by a creeping dread as they realized Rin had overheard them.

"Rin, we were just messing around! Please, you've got to forgive us!" Agent Mina's voice cracked as she spoke.

Agent Nana stood beside her, nodding fervently, too shaken to find her own words.

Daichi's brow creased in disapproval as he clasped Rin's arm securely. "Enough, Rin. This way," he stated.

Rin, however, didn't cease her assault of words. As he pulled her along, she continued to hurl threats back at the two enforcers. "You both should've kept your mouths shut. Now, I'll shut them for you—permanently."

The other enforcers couldn't help but stare in awe. The B and C-rank recruits in particular were captivated by the sheer force displayed by the S-rank enforcers.

Despite this, they kept a respectful—and slightly fearful—distance from Kaze, even more so than from Daichi Fujimoto or Rin Asakura.

Once Rin had calmed down, Daichi came over to where Kaze stood. "Got another job for you. Be in briefing room 12 in an hour," he said quickly, then turned and headed down the hall without waiting for a response.

__________

Kaze walked back to his plain room, thinking about the Agency and their way of doing things. He looked down at the bracelet on his wrist, the one that kept his anolity in check. A scientist named Keito Shinsei gave it to him here a long time ago, back when his anolity first showed up when he was a kid.

He remembered that night...the full moon, losing control, his parents' screams. After that trauma, the agency took him in and trained him to be a weapon. So many experiments, injections, torture sessions...all to turn him into their obedient attack dog.

Kaze sighed and scratched his head, frustration bubbling over. "Am I even on the right side? The agency keeps saying their mission is necessary, but..."

He thought back to the pyrokinetic anomaly he'd captured today, and the injury's that the anomaly caused to his recruits.

Kaze initially tried to rest in his bed, but frustration quickly got the better of him. He sprang up and began pacing back and forth in his quarters. "How could a B-rank threat overpower five of my enforcers? It just doesn't make sense," he grumbled under his breath.

"That pyrokinetic anomaly was supposed to be a minor threat, not... not capable of this."

He paused, his fists tightly balled. "We're losing too many enforcers, our B-ranks are practically wiped out. There's something wrong here. I need to go through Hiroto's files. He's the one assessing these threats. I need to be subtle about it, though. I'll get to the bottom of this."

His mind raced with resolve, ready to uncover the truth that could potentially turn the agency on its head.

A knock at the door shook him from his thoughts. Time for his next mission, it seemed. He would obey for now, but a seed of doubt had been planted. Change was coming...he could feel it.

Kaze walked into the dimly lit briefing room, his footsteps echoing off the cold metal walls. Hiroto Nagasaki the high-ranking official stood waiting, the holographic display behind him showing a swirling tornado tearing across the landscape.

"Jūryoku, glad you made it," Hiroto said, clearly relieved. "We've got a serious problem on our hands. As you can see, there's a tornado right outside the city and it seems that this anomaly has the ability to influence the weather but unfortunately, lacks control over it."

He indicated towards the display, continuing, "Given the unpredictability and potential risks involved, we've classified it as an S-rank threat."

Kaze's expression remained impassive as he studied the hologram. Just a blur of destructive power, no visible target.

"Bring it in. Use any means necessary."
