The City of Opportunity

The City of Opportunity

An old women was at her death bed with two little children gripping her hands in desperation. Weezing from time to time, the little girl shook her head in helplessness. They were drowing in debt. She could not help her. She knew she'd have to watch her die with her little brother at her side.

Her movements grew slower as her breathing became more labored. She was no longer as healthy as she was in her youth. She was about to leave her two children to pursue her late husband who'd went to the other side from a cureable sickness caught too late. She had taken over all of the family businesses after the happening. It was a hard life, but it was rewarding. She had perhaps aged faster from this but she believed she did her best. She had two beautiful young children who were a bit mal nurished, but she did her best. She saw the light with a field of beautifully blinding flowers. She could see her husband smiling at her. He was across the steady river in the field waving at her. She was tempted by human greed to run across into his arms for she had married for love but she had but one last task. She knew that this would become key for the happiness of her children.

She imagined who her children would grow up to become as she spat out more blood as she motioned them closer to hear last words, "Dear children, I know I couldn't provide for you what our neighbor did for their own..." She could feel another fit of coughs building up but held it down. "I can't watch you grow up to see who you'll come to be and like... God how I wish I could... But fear not my beloved children. There's a land not too far from here. Though you may as well use up your wages to get there, it is worth it. I promise it as the sky is blue. People call it the city of opportunity. Go now and don't turn back. You have family there, ask for the Derkinacks. They live in the very heart of the urban center of ..." She went still for a moment, her eyes far away again. She was thinking of her husband again. Before the light left her eyes she managed to wisper with painful gasps in between: "I love you."

She was gone and the little girl carried her wailing little brother away. She'd become the strong one in the family, she thought to herself. She heard of this place before. And not all of it was positive. There was said to be a dark side as well. Though the land was said to accept every man and child of any origion, people too different were set apart there. Many families have wished they'd never set out to find the place. As they had become consumed by its weird rules unique to everywhere. Many people despaired at 'The great city of Opportunity'.
