Chapter 6: Confronting the Unknown
As the scout crew of the Vanguard, led by Lieutenant Turner, ventured deeper into the glass planet, they soon realized that they were not alone. Unbeknownst to them, they had unknowingly intruded upon the territory of a creature that defied all imagination—a nightmare beast born from the shards of glass and connected by a viscous black oil.
Lieutenant Jack Turner, along with a few of the security forces supported by the other departments, treaded cautiously through the fractured landscape, unaware of the impending danger that lurked in the shadows. The map maker, Squid was beside Turner, who was taking point.
Suddenly, a low rumbling growl echoed through the air, sending shivers down their spines. They turned their heads in unison, eyes wide with both fear and curiosity, to witness the source of the haunting sound.
Emerging from the depths of the glass-strewn terrain, the nightmare beast revealed itself in all its terrifying glory. Its body consisted of sharp shards of glass; each piece connected by the inky black oil that oozed from its form. It towered on a ledge above them, it was about the size of a large dog back on earth. The Mirror Beast was a grotesque fusion of a wolf and a mythical dragon, with jagged edges and menacing eyes that gleamed with an otherworldly intensity.
Squid’s heart raced as he tried to comprehend the creature before her. "This... this is unlike anything we've ever encountered," he stammered, his voice filled with a mixture of fascination and dread. "Its composition, its features... it's a true anomaly."
Private Sarah Jones quickly assessed the situation, her mind racing to find a solution. "We need to stay calm and slowly back away," she urged, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. "We've unintentionally crossed its path, and we don't want to provoke it further."
As Turner raised his gauss rifle, the creature seemed to sense the tension in the air. Its gaze locked onto the Lieutenant, its multifaceted eyes narrowing as it emitted a low, guttural growl. The creature's mirror-like exterior shimmered, reflecting the eerie light of the glass planet., “We are not backing down, there is only one of those beasts, and if it is a predator, we need to show it, that we aren’t its next meal.”
Squid's instincts kicked in, urging caution and a measured approach. "Wait, Lieutenant," he called out, his voice tinged with a mix of concern and curiosity. "We don't fully understand this creature. It could be far more powerful than we anticipate. Provoking it might not be wise."
Private Jones, her finger poised near the trigger of her weapon, considered Squid's words. She knew that recklessness could lead to dire consequences, especially in this unfamiliar environment. "He's right, Lieutenant. We need to prioritize our safety and the safety of the crew. Our primary goal is to gather information and explore, not engage in unnecessary conflicts."
Turner hesitated, his grip on the rifle relaxing slightly. He understood the wisdom in their words, but the desire to protect his team and assert their dominance over this strange creature still burned within him. Taking a deep breath, he lowered his weapon, his resolve shifting.
"You're right," Turner admitted, his voice laced with a mixture of determination and caution. "Our priority is the safety and well-being of the crew. We'll observe from a distance and gather as much data as we can without provoking the creature."
As they slowly began to back away, maintaining a respectful distance, the creature's growls grew louder, and a strange black ooze dripped from what looked like a mouth. The other crew members moved back, but Squid, Sarah and Jack, the others breathed a collective sigh of relief, grateful for the chance to retreat unharmed. The crew followed the Lieutenants’ lead, inching backward cautiously, their eyes locked on the nightmare beast. Each step was deliberate, a silent plea for the creature to ignore their presence.

Squid, whispered as he tried to take a step backwards, “Do you think that Mirror is going to eat us?”
“If looks could kill, Squid, you would have killed me long ago,” Turner joked as he too took a step back.
But fate had other plans. A crew member, overwhelmed by fear and panic, stumbled, and crashed into a pile of glass fragments, creating a cacophony of noise that shattered the tense silence. The mirror beast wasn’t alone, and the attention snapped towards the fallen crew member, its eyes narrowing with predatory focus. In a sudden burst of movement, it lunged forward, its razor-sharp claws slicing through the air. That was when the screaming started behind the three-point guards. The first Mirror Wolf wasn’t alone.
“That Nightmare must of head friends, open fire Sarah, I am going back to the other crew members,” Turner ordered, and ran towards the screams. Sarah opened fire on the Mirror on the ledge above them.
Lieutenant Turner, acting on instinct, shouted, "Take cover!" The crew scattered, seeking shelter behind large rock formations and shards of glass, desperately trying to evade the creature's lethal strike.
In the chaos that ensued, the nightmare beast unleashed its fury, its ferocious attack tearing through the surroundings. The ground trembled under its weight, shattered glass scattering like deadly shrapnel.
Turner fired, rounds from the rifle ripped into the creature, black ooze covered the ground. His heart pounding assessed the situation. That was when more howls screamed out, they weren’t alone. They were outmatched, or at least outnumbered, facing a creature of unparalleled power and aggression. Their survival instincts kicked in as they planned their next move, determined to protect their crew, and find a way to escape the clutches of this nightmare beast.
As Turner fired round after round into the nightmare beast, more and more of the small sized creatures began to rally. The echoing howls of its companions intensified, surrounding them in a chilling symphony of danger. The situation was dire, and the crew knew they had to act swiftly and decisively to survive.
Sarah continued to lay down suppressing fire, her shots finding their mark and temporarily driving back the advancing creatures. The shattered glass fragments and rock formations provided some cover, but they knew it wouldn't hold up for long against the relentless assault.
Turner's mind raced, searching for a plan amidst the chaos. He knew they needed to regroup and fortify their position, buying time to come up with a strategy. "Fall back!" he yelled over the cacophony, gesturing for the crew to retreat towards a nearby rocky outcrop.
As the crew scrambled for cover, Turner assessed their options. Their firepower alone wouldn't be enough to overcome the overwhelming numbers and strength of the nightmare beasts. They needed a tactical advantage.
"Sarah, we need to find a bottleneck, a place where we can defend ourselves and limit their access," Turner shouted, his voice filled with urgency. "There's a narrow ravine just ahead. If we can lure them in, we might have a chance."
Sarah nodded, her eyes focused and determined. Together, they relayed the plan to the rest of the crew, directing them to fall back towards the ravine. They formed a defensive perimeter, creating a makeshift barrier using debris and their remaining firepower.
As the Mirror Beasts closed in, their menacing growls reverberating through the air, the crew unleashed a coordinated assault. Their weapons blazed, aiming for vital spots, and exploiting weaknesses. The Mirror Beasts fought back fiercely, their sharp claws and powerful jaws wreaking havoc, but the crew held their ground.
Within the narrow confines of the ravine, the nightmare beasts' numbers became a disadvantage. Their movements were restricted, and the crew's concentrated fire took a toll on their ranks. The battle raged on; each side locked in a desperate struggle for survival.
Time seemed to slow as Turner's heart pounded in his chest. He knew that their window of opportunity was closing, and they needed to act decisively. "Sarah, we need to push through their lines and regroup with the others," he called out, his voice filled with determination.
Sarah nodded, her eyes shining with resilience. With a burst of energy, the two of them led a daring charge, cutting through the Mirror Beasts' defenses. The crew followed suit, fighting with unwavering determination.
Amidst the chaos and the clash of weapons, the crew managed to break free from the encirclement. They fought their way back to their fellow crew members, joining forces once again.
Breathing heavily, Turner surveyed the aftermath of the battle. The nightmare beasts lay defeated, their once formidable presence reduced to lifeless forms on the glassy ground. The crew, though battered and bruised, stood united, their spirits unbroken.
"We made it," Turner said, his voice filled with a mix of relief and pride. "But we can't let our guard down. This glass planet is full of unknown dangers. We need to stay vigilant and continue working together."
The crew nodded; their faces etched with determination. They had faced a terrifying ordeal and emerged stronger from it. With renewed resolve, they prepared to face the challenges that lay ahead, knowing that their survival depended on their unity, resourcefulness, and unwavering spirit.
