Chapter 87: Against All Odds

Chapter 87: Against All Odds

The corrupted Zone shifted once more. The Titan’s roar echoed across the battlefield, shaking the fractured ground as its chaotic energy rippled outward. Around it, smaller creatures began to emerge from fissures in the earth, their twisted forms scuttling and leaping with unnatural speed. Though weaker than the Titan, their sheer numbers made them a dire threat.

Kei scanned the growing swarm, his grip tightening on the Wave Flowing Dagger. “This is getting worse by the second,” he muttered.

Mia wiped blood from the corner of her mouth, her Balance Talisman flickering as she steadied herself. “We need a plan. We can’t handle both the Titan and these things at the same time.”

Kei nodded, his usual smirk replaced by a grim determination. “Yeah, no kidding. You got any bright ideas?”

Mia’s eyes locked onto the Titan. “I’ll keep it occupied,” she said firmly. “You deal with the smaller ones. Quickly.”

Kei hesitated, glancing between her and the approaching swarm. “You sure? That thing nearly took us out five minutes ago.”

Mia’s grip on her scythe tightened. “We don’t have a choice. If we let those creatures overwhelm us, it’s over.”

Kei exhaled sharply, spinning his dagger by its string. “Alright, but don’t go getting yourself killed, alright?”

Mia managed a faint smile. “I’ll try not to.”

THE SWARM

Kei darted toward the oncoming creatures, his Mood Tempo skill pulsing in time with the beat of a fast-paced song playing in his mind. The rhythm fueled his movements, each step precise and fluid as he weaved through the chaos.

The first creature lunged at him—a spindly, insectoid thing with jagged claws and glowing eyes. Kei ducked under its attack, slashing upward with Resonant Strike. The dagger’s vibrations tore through the creature’s form, shattering it into particles of Essence.

“Alright, one down. A million to go,” he muttered, hurling his dagger at another approaching creature. The blade embedded itself in the creature’s chest before retracting with a flick of the string.

Kei’s movements became a blur, his dagger spinning and slicing through the swarm as he danced around their attacks. But the sheer number of creatures was overwhelming. For every one he destroyed, two more seemed to take its place.

MIA VS. THE TITAN

While Kei battled the swarm, Mia faced the Titan head-on. Her Balance Talisman glowed brightly as she swung her scythe in a wide arc, sending a wave of stabilizing energy toward the massive creature. The Titan staggered slightly, its chaotic energy momentarily disrupted, but it quickly regained its balance, retaliating with a massive swing of its crystalline arm.

Mia leapt back, narrowly avoiding the attack as the ground where she had stood shattered into fragments. Her scythe glinted in the distorted light as she struck again, aiming for the Titan’s core. The blade connected, but the Titan’s chaotic energy resisted, pushing her back with a force that nearly knocked her off her feet.

She gritted her teeth, sweat dripping down her face as she steadied herself. “Just hold on, Kei,” she whispered. “I can’t keep this up forever.”

A DESPERATE GAMBLE

Kei’s dagger spun through the air, taking down another pair of creatures before retracting to his hand. He glanced over his shoulder, his heart sinking as he saw Mia falter under the Titan’s relentless assault.

She swung her scythe again, her movements slower now, her energy waning. The Titan roared, raising a massive crystalline arm for a devastating strike. Mia raised her scythe to block, but her knees buckled under the strain.

“Mia!” Kei shouted, but he was too far away. The swarm had pushed him to the edge of the battlefield, and there was no way he could reach her in time.

Panic surged through him, his mind racing for a solution. Then, a desperate idea sparked.

Kei activated Resonant Shield, the vibrating barrier springing to life behind him. But instead of using it for defense, he turned and threw himself backward, landing against the shield’s surface.

The bounciness of the shield reacted instantly, launching him forward with incredible speed. The world blurred around him as he hurtled toward the Titan, his dagger glowing with the energy of Resonant Strike.

THE RESCUE

The Titan’s arm descended, aiming to crush Mia where she stood. She raised her scythe in a final act of defiance, bracing herself for the impact.

But before the strike could land, Kei slammed into the Titan’s side, the force of his launch amplified by the vibrations of his dagger. The impact disrupted the Titan’s balance, its arm veering off course and crashing into the ground instead of Mia.

Kei landed in a crouch, his dagger spinning in his hand as he stood between Mia and the Titan. “Told you not to get yourself killed,” he said, glancing back at her with a grin.

Mia stared at him, her expression a mix of disbelief and relief. “You’re insane.”

“Yeah, well, it worked, didn’t it?” Kei replied, turning back to face the Titan.

THE TURNING POINT

The Titan roared in fury, its energy surging as it prepared for another attack. But Kei and Mia were ready.

Kei activated Resonant Shield again, this time deploying it in front of them to absorb the Titan’s next strike. The barrier vibrated violently under the force, but it held just long enough for Mia to recover.

She stepped forward, her Balance Talisman glowing brighter than ever. With a deep breath, she channeled all her remaining energy into her scythe, the blade radiating a stabilizing light that cut through the chaos.

“Together,” she said, glancing at Kei.

Kei nodded, his grin returning as he readied his dagger. “Let’s finish this.”

The two charged forward, their combined attacks striking the Titan with precision and force. The massive creature faltered, its chaotic energy destabilizing as the final blow landed.

With a deafening roar, the Titan collapsed, its form disintegrating into particles of Essence that dissipated into the air.

AFTERMATH

Kei and Mia stood in the silence that followed, their breaths heavy as the corrupted Zone around them began to stabilize. The ground stopped shaking, and the oppressive energy in the air faded.

Kei let out a shaky laugh, his knees buckling as he sat down. “Okay, that was... too close.”

Mia leaned on her scythe, her Balance Talisman flickering faintly. “Agreed.”
