Chapter 3

Chapter 3

You run as fast as you can. But you can only run so fast in a dense forest. You look back and can see them catching up. Damn, For having such small legs, they are pretty fast. They are catching up, and you're getting tired. You realize something.

I won't be able to outrun them. I can't hide. I don't think I'll be able to climb the trees fast enough... I'll have to fight.

You come to a stop, you feel a stinging sensation on your naked feet, you ignore it. You quickly turn around. You see that the creatures did not stay grouped up together, the closest one will be on you any second and the furthest one is some ways away. Your heart is pounding.

Focus, I need to focus. I grip my stick tightly and prepare to hit with it.

The closest creature reaches you and lashes out at you with his spear. You try to step away but it still manages to slice into your thigh. The hospital gown you're wearing around your waist is ripped off. You are now completely naked. Your stick comes down and hits the creature squarely on it's head. It falls on the ground. Your thigh is bleeding. You barely have a chance to take a breath and the next one is upon you.

These creatures are quick.

You feint a move to the left and quick move to the right swinging your stick. The creature falls for the feint and misses you while you bash it's head from the side. One of it's eyes pops out, as it falls sideways.

So... feint's work.

The next creature is upon you and you feint again as it stabs at you. It misses and you manage to bash its head. Only two left. You look up to prepare for the next creature and an arrow sprouts from your shoulder. Two of the creatures with bows stand some twenty meters away. You duck to avoid the next arrow. You move behind a tree.

The arrow in my shoulder does not hurt too bad. That's probably the adrenaline doing its job. But should I pull it out? I know that taking out the arrow might cause more bleeding but moving around a lot can cause the arrow to do more internal damage...

You don't think about it. You grab the arrow with one other hand and rip it out of your shoulder. You ignore the spike of pain that comes with it.

Hopefully I don't bleed out.

You peek around the trunk to see what the creatures are doing. You see one of them circling around your cover and the other one staying put.

Looks like they don't want too close. They are both carrying bows so that makes sense... I'll need to rush one of them and try to dodge the arrows. I'll wait a few breaths and then make my move.

A few seconds pass and then you move out of your cover. You see the creature in front of you preparing to shoot an arrow. You wait until the creature fires it's bow and duck back into cover. The arrow whizzes past you.

It was a feint!

You move back out of your cover and start rushing the creature as it prepares another arrow. In the corner of your eye you see the creature that was going to flank you aim at you.

Nothing I can do about that. I'm moving sideways from him so I'll need to go fast and he'll likely miss.

A sudden pain in your cheek.

Son of a bitch.

You stumble but straighten up and keep running towards your target. You rip out the arrow that's stuck in your cheek and spit out a broken tooth. Your tongue feels a piece of tooth that has been broken off. You arrive at your target just before it fires another arrow. You move to the side just as it fires. He misses and you bash it with your stick as you run past him! You slide to a stop and turn around. The creature has dropped his bow but it's still standing. Rush him again to finish him off but suddenly he jumps at you. You hold it off with your stick but it's scrabbling to get at you. An arrow whizzes past you, and you flinch. It pushes away your stick and opens its wide mouth. You can see sharp yellow teeth.

Got an idea.

You spit a glob of blood directly in its mouth. It immediately starts choking on your tooth that was in it, and you manage to bash its head and as falls to the ground.

Quickly, I need to take cover from the last archer.

You move behind a tree and peek. You can see the last creature running away. Make sure it's really running away. You watch the creature running until it disappears in the trees. You slide down the tree you are leaning on and sit on the ground. Time to inspect the damage.

There is only a red scratch on your thigh. That could have been much worse. Your shoulder hurts but it isn't bleeding too much.

I'll still need to clean it. I don't want to get infected.

Your right cheek is shredded and a molar is broken in half. Your tongue recoils as you feel the damage with your tongue.

God damn it. Why my teeth.

The soles of your feet are scratched and a small piece of sharp rock is embedded in your left foot. You take out the rock and your foot starts bleeding.

I can't afford to lose all this liquid. You take a deep breath and stand up.

I'll need to start moving before the adrenaline wears off, or I'll never get up.

You look towards the forest.

I might be able to find something to drink in the forest, but... I'm a city boy, don't know anything about outdoorsy stuff.

You look towards the direction of the obelisk. There might be something to drink there.

Hopefully there are no more of these creatures there. But first, I'll need to check the bodies. Maybe one of them brought something to drink.

You inspect the creatures one by one, moving slowly, favoring your right leg. One of them was carrying a loop of string around its waist with a pouch but it didn't have anything edible, just a few small white crystals. You don't have any pouches and the hospital gown is completely ruined.

It looks like you're staying naked. But I'll be taking the pouch.

You take the loop of string and put it around my neck. The string seems to be made out of some kind of leather. You look around some more but can't find anything more of value.

Their short spears seem like a worse weapon than my stick. Well, time to get going.

As you turn around to move towards the obelisk you notice something shining. You look back to see what it was and you find that something is shining in the socket of the creature whose eye you popped out.

That is interesting.

You move closer to inspect it. There appears to be something reflective in there.

Ugh, I don't want to touch it. Guess these creatures have something in their head. That's interesting but I'm not going to stick my fingers in its eye socket to grab it.

Having inspected the creature you turn towards the obelisk and start moving. The distance that took you a few minutes to run takes half an hour to walk back to. You approach the dilapidated fortress. You keep your head moving and looking for any more of the creatures.

Hopefully the one that ran away didn't come back here.

Your grip on your stick tightens as you move past the gates of the fortress.

As you step through the crumbling entrance of the wooden fort, the pungent smell of mold and dampness fills your nostrils. The wooden walls, once formidable and sturdy, now sag and splinter under the weight of time and neglect.

The wooden walls, they seem like they would have been sturdy when new. What could have causes all this damage? Those creatures surely didn't build it.

As you move trough the gate, you can see the black obelisk, a some distance way. Your eyes move around looking for anything to drink, the wilderness has overtaken this place. You can see plants and growing everywhere, obscuring your view. But you can see and smell some smoke, and starting moving in that direction, slowly. In case there are more of those creatures... The shines down onto you and you lick your try lips as you approach. You stay hidden behind the foliage as you observe the surroundings of the campfire, with a partly eaten boar like creature on a spit. You can see leather tents crudely stitched together, but you don't see any immediate sources of water.

I'll need to inspect the tents, it would make sense to store water in shade. But I'll need to watch out for those creatures.

You sneak around the camp, constantly staying behind foliage, making sure that those creatures are not here. But then you hear a faint whistle coming out of one of the tents. You tense. You stand still trying to figure out what it could be. The whistle keeps repeating every few seconds. Nothing seems to have noticed you so you move closer to the tent. You can see trough a hole in the tent that it's one of those creatures! It appears to be sleeping.

Ah, those whistles must be the sound of its snores. I'll leave it alone for now. I'll need to check the other tents to make sure there are not any more of them.

After checking every tent, you find out that this creature is the only one here. You sneak up on it. You feel uncertain about whether to bash its head in.

No. If it wakes up it will try to eat me. It must die.

You can't get a good angle to bash the creature, it's under a tent, but there is one of those short spears lying next to the tent. You pick it up and use it to stab the creature trough its chest. It lets out a tiny squeak before it stops moving.

Now I'm sure there are no more of these creatures, I can inspect every tent without fear of being eaten.

After a few minutes of looking you find that one of the tens contains a jar of water. The water does not look completely clean. You smell the water, it smells slightly pungent, but the smell does not immediately repel you.

Oh well, bottoms up.

You pick up the Jar and drink from it. It's slightly warm, but it's refreshing. You use some water to clean up your wounds.

Now that my thirst is slated, lets see if there is anything I can wear around here.

You don't find anything so you rip one of the tents from the ground and wrap it around your waist.

Very ghetto but it'll do for now.

Once more you look toward the obelisk.

Alright time to see what's up with that thing.
